Re: Is it in the Yankees' best interest to trade A-Rod?
A-Rod's Salary is dramatically lower next season (16 million) so it's not that huge of an immediate hit.... especially considering something that most people don't realize... Texas pays for half his salary. So it drops to about 8 million next year. 8 million for A-Rod. Yeah, the Angels can afford that. But it's still a big hit, so it needs to be a fairly acceptable one when you consider the caliber of player. The Angels need a big bat in their lineup. The Angels need a legit 3rd Baseman in their field. The Unit is old, Moose is old, Wright is done in NY, Pavano is an empty shirt, Lidle's contract is up... Hughes will be good but you can't depend on a rookie. Wang is a stud but he's only 1 man. The Yankees need pitching. The Angels have pitching. There is less pressure in LA for A-Rod than in NY.A-Rod's attitude and personality are better suited for LA than NY.Everything makes sense. So compensation?Yankees send A-Rod to LA.Angels send Scot Shields (RP), Kelvim Escobar (SP), and Ervin Santana (SP)The Yankees now have a legit mid-relief setup: Scot Shields, Dotel, and Fireballer Kyle Farnsworth to go with Closer Mariano Rivera. Their greatest weakness becomes a strength. The Yankees rotation can be Wang, Mussina, Escobar, Johnson, Santana.Leaving Hughes, Rasner, and Henn to be in the pen and prepare to come in in 2008 when RJ and Moose are done for us.The Angels now have A-Rod to go with Juan Rivera and Vlad, which creats a very legit 3-4-5, especially with Figgins leading off.The Angles rotation doesn't take a huge hit as Bartolo Colon will be back from injury (their ace) and they still have their young stud in Jared Weaver. The Rotation is Colon, Weaver, Lackey, Saunders, and Jeff Weaver. A very studly rotation.Their pen consists of probably the best young closer in the game in Francisco Rodriguez, along with Hector Carrasco, and Brendan Donnelly, so Shields will be missed but not as much as you'd think. And as for the Yankees empty 3rd Base spot? Well Aramis Ramirez is a Free Agent....
