Just seems like every time a big name FA bounces, lately the team gets compensated some way.

LMA was a UFA. Nobody owed the Blazers anything for signing him.

Maybe NO could have traded LMA a year earlier. But the team trading for him would be taking on a player who was certain to bolt as a UFA.

As well, NO did try to get LMA to stay. I'd say he went all out to do so.

Were HAyward and Millsap UFA? Just seems like these players almost were working with their old clubs on their way out. Or LeBron when he left Miami? Just hate not getting anything in return.

The only reason the signing team would turn a UFA signing into a S&T is to get the player more money and/or more years. The old team can offer more years and bigger raises.

http://heathoops.com/2014/04/the-co...-draft-picks-becoming-clearer-for-miami-heat/

Both players were eligible for maximum salaries of $16.6 million in the first year of any new contract signed, whether it was with their prior teams, with the Heat, or with anyone else. But while the starting salary was to be the same no matter where they signed, the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement gives the home team a financial advantage when it comes to re-signing its own players. Both players’ home teams were eligible to offer their respective player one more year (six instead of five) and bigger annual raises (10.5% instead of 8%). That translated to a maximum potential offer of $125.5 million over six years, versus the $96.1 million over five years that the Heat could offer.

James and Bosh utilized the structure not to make the increased money, but rather to mitigate the impact of taking less. They leveraged the sign-and-trade structure to take a reduced starting salary of $14.5 million – $2.1 million less than the maximum – in order to accommodate the contracts of Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem. (Wade, too, did the same).

Each structured the longer six year deal with the higher 10.5% maximum raises, but with the lower starting salary. The contracts paid out $109.8 million over the six years, roughly $15.5 million less than they otherwise could have made had they accepted full max deals.

The sign-and-trade structure, however, came at a cost for Miami.

After two years and hundreds if not thousands of posts on the subject, I have to believe you're just trolling to be snarky. Either that or you are a bigger nerd/geek than the folks on this site who actually haven't let go of the whole LMA drama. And I'm the idiot who rose to the bait.......

Different sport but the Mariners make a pretty big trade about once a month and they still suck balls.
They are injury cursed...especially when it comes to pitchers....then batters catching fastballs in the face doesn't help...I like their lineup better now than in the recent past

Fuck are you talking about? I just asked a couple questions. What are you talking about?

Didn't you want to keep him? LA said he wanted to stay. He lied. End of story. We need to stop blaming NO for that fuckin turncoat.
I did want to keep him. Loved his game. I know I'm one of the few. Just was saying that if he WAS leaving, it would have been good to get something in exchange. Seems like a lot of guys recently have worked with their teams to get something in return for their old squads.

He probably knew he was leaving. We didn't.

I honestly thought he was coming back.
As soon as we lost that last game in Memphis and we were getting on the bus to head back to the hotel, one of the guys yelled, "What the fuck is LA doing?" Looked up and he had a private car there taking him away. We didn't know at the time he had chartered that plane for himself to go back to PDX and not going back with us the next morning.

You could telol it pissed everybody off. Knew he was as good as gone.

I know he got tons of hate on here, but I loved what he did for us. Miss his low post game.

Utah didn't receive anything for Hayward. Boston had to trade away a player to make room, but they traded Avery Bradley to Detroit, not Utah. Atlanta also didn't get anything for Paul Millsap. Both guys were just signed as free agents, as Aldridge was.

He quit on us in Game 4 of that series.

I liked his game for the brief time he was LaMonster and playing around the basket. Would have liked to see more inside-outside and less outside-farther outside from him the last couple of years.

The last part of your post is really the crux of the bisquit and the source of most of the bad blood. He showed no loyalty whatsoever to fans or teammates in leaving the franchise hanging out to dry with nothing, when he new damn well he wasn't coming back. I can only speculate that he didn't want to weaken whatever team he went to by facilitating the Blazers receiving compensation. While that's a rational decision for his best personal interest I suppose, it sucked for us.

I think UCD is confused because you dropped your internet persona. He didn't realize you were being John, not HCP.

There was one and only one point where Neil could have reasonably dealt LA, and that was the summer of 2013, with us coming off a lottery season, Dame having just won ROY, and LA having two years left on his deal. Once we started that next season out gangbusters, he really had no choice but to be all in with LA through the rest of his deal.

Could be that, or maybe the chili he had at lunch is just making it's presence known.
It's a known fact that Ainge loves to eat at Chipotle. Maybe one of those rats they have crapped in his Sofrita bowl.

I will wait on Zach collins and how he turns out but Swanigan seems like a sleeper. Drafted well there but once again, gonna have to see if Zach Collins turns into a good role player some day. Other than that I mean he has done pretty well. He went after whiteside last year, went after PG and Melo this year so far, not much you can do when Melo doesn't wanna be here, Whiteside didn't sign here, and pritchard wanted nothing to do with our offer. The problems he has had is keeping Meyers, Allen Crabbe contract which he somewhat redeemed himself but not really because we ended up dumping an asset for nothing because of the contract and that turner contract is still pretty gross. So really the worst he has done was last summer.

But the question was, is he playing it safe? ;)

My answer would be safe is the wrong word.....I think he's playing within his ways and means and being pretty smart about it. He's no Trader Bob...that's for sure

Question:

Was Olshey playing it safe when he offered all 3 picks and any player on the team sans our big 3 for Paul George??

Or was K-Pee just being a dumbass?

Both. Outside of our big three everyone is replaceable, especially when you have the opportunity to land a superstar, even a rental. That was an obvious move. KP was an obvious idiot as well.
