That's oversimplifying all of those problems. Sure they have been around but not to the degree we have in today's world. We are now seeing the results of 50 years of bad policy, it's always been a snowball effect.

Drugs are less of a choice than many people think, do you really think people would rather rot their teeth out living in a gutter than live a normal productive life?

I'm sure we are talking about different things when we say social priorities. My definition is health and mental care, drug rehab programs, less war spending and more infrastructure spending, accessable education, ect. I'm don't mean individual choices of iPhones and advocado toast.

My point is that homelessness isn't a liberal or conservative thing. It's a poverty thing. And the numbers show there are more conservatives in poverty than liberals. Although the poverty rate is higher in districts represented by Democrats, most poor people in the United States live in a community represented by a Republican. Taken together, the poverty rate in districts represented by Democrats in 2016 (“blue” districts) was 17.1 percent in 2010-14 compared with 14.4 percent in those represented by Republicans (“red” districts). There are millions more poor conservatives than liberal.

Believe me, it's a problem that needs to be addressed nationally but I don't think Trump's the guy that has the capability to recognize it and do something about it.
I think Trump's a guy who blames individuals for their poor choices. I think this is not a bad approach when you're dealing with individuals but when dealing with large numbers that tells you there is something wrong with the system. You just can't blame a whole bunch of people for making bad choices. There's got be a systemic problem.

You’ve literally listed 4 of the bluest Democratic bastions that there are, leaving out Chicago (which I’ve avoided) and DC (which I can attest to, though nowhere near as rampant as Seattle or Portland). Tampa doesn’t have a large homeless problem, even for being pretty blue/red split. Albany NY didn’t. Wilmington, NC doesn’t.

Yeah, I remember that conversation. The homeless problem was worsening when I lived there on the east side. It is sad, disturbing, and no real long-term solution is in sight. Good luck to the mayor and the rest of the housing officials.

Canby is the same. I'm soo much more at peace now in this small town caring type of community. Central East Side of Portland really dragged me down. Sorry @PtldPlatypus not sure how you do it over there anymore.

No food carts, but we have many summertime events damn near walking distance from my house.

20 some years ago I lived just over the river in Wilsonville near the park and library and went to Canby to the auto auction when I needed a van...it's like a lot of small towns in Western Lane County..used to love those tennis courts in the Wilsonville park because you could always find an open one...which is harder and harder to do these days

I somewhat disagree. Many liberals want an easier life than to just buckle down and work hard, so they put themselves into poverty by wanting the government to pay for things instead of working hard to pay for it themselves.
At least the social libs of portland are like that.
