Is there anyway the Blazers sign Kevin Durant?

Unless OKC re-signs Durant, a team signing him this summer not going to have Bird Rights on a 1-year deal. So when he wants the "10-year max" in the summer of 2017, you're likely going to have to have cap space to sign him. The recruiting effort will be to give up that extra year and the extra $$$$ to go to a team now that can use you now and has cap space now...

Here are some calculations, to show it in starker contrast...assumptions are from the reports in April about the cap going to 92M in 2016-17 and 109M in 2017-18.
Because of CBA minutiae, it's not a straight "35%" or "30%", but close. Here are the basics of what KD would make guaranteed

If KD signs a max deal this summer, a team must have $26.2M in cap space. If he signs a full, 4yr non-Bird max, he'll be guaranteed 4/$111.8M.
If he re-signs with OKC (Bird max), he'll be guaranteed 5/$150.5M. So he'd immediately be giving up 1yr and almost $39M guaranteed to come to, say, POR. But it gets waaaay more interesting than that. He's at the 9-year vet point this summer, which means he can get 30% max of the cap. If he is a UFA next summer (2017), he can make 35%. Of a cap that's projected to go up to $109M. So, let's say he signs a 1yr deal this summer with anyone, versus a 1 year keeping his Bird rights...

Team must have $35.9M in cap space in 2017 to sign him, unless it's OKC re-signing him.
His 2016-17 salary (26.2M) + a 4 year, non-Bird, (any other team) will net him 5 years, $179.3M (already $29M over what OKC just by themselves could give him this summer)
His 2016-17 salary (26.2M) + a 5-year Bird max (only OKC) gives him 6 years, $232.4M (or 2 years and $120M more guaranteed than, say, POR can offer this summer)

Now, we've seen players take less guaranteed to go where they want to go (coughTexcough) but even in the best non-OKC scenario (where he signs a 1yr max with anyone this summer and a 4year max with anyone with 35M in cap space next summer) gets him 5/$179M. By staying in OKC he could make another year and $53M more guaranteed.

Regardless, he will almost assuredly not be signing a long-term contract this summer, unless his knees are secretly on the Brandon Roy plan.

Edit: Man, I must've been drunk when I wrote this. Arithmetic errors all over the place.

Of course evey team has a chance until they are really out but I think OKC blew it tonight. This was there chance. Give him your shorts Neil!

Even if we have no chance at Durant, he's going to keep teams like Miami busy for a while, maybe we can steal a guy like Whiteside while they're occupied with trying for Durant.

You, as a Blazer fan, want the center with a prior knee surgery, and current other knee injury?

Has Lillard already begun to subtlety recruit Durant? I hope so. I think Durant will take note of this. Plus he played in Seattle, maybe he misses his fans in the NW :)

Speaking of stupid comments......Kenny and Shaq last night after the game going on and on about the Thunder leaving Steph and Klay "wide open" last night..........they weren't THAT wide open. It doesn't take much for these two guys to catch and release. Especially when both teams are racing up and down the court at a frantic pace.

I am sure they would also chastise the defenders if they fouled them 25 feet from the basket as well. It makes it tough when you have to stay out of their space and give them ample opportunity to land. These guys are masters (as is Dame) at drawing the foul.

Durant sucks. We're better off with Aminu.
Kevin Durant's career high is 54. Aminu's career high is 30. 54-30 is 24. And there are 24 hours in a day.

Kevin Durant has averaged more points per game than Aminu's career high. Kevin Durant is 2nd in the NBA only to Steph Curry in true shooting %.

Yet the bottom line is: He played like shit in what might be the most important game of his season

That doesn't define him as a player. He has showed up for his team countless times in important games. I think you're falling into the "what have you done for me lately?" trap.

It absolutely defines him as a player. If the Thunder lose tommorow that franchise is DONE.

Nope. Might as well move the franchise if they lose. Durant and Westbrook will leave and no one will go there ever.

What is his defining moment as a player in this league? He hasn't had one. Nor has Westbrook. The big time stars have those memorable moments. Tomorrow is one of those nights when Durant has an opportunity to have one of those moments. It's weird but whoever thought there'd be a game in which Durant was the 4th best player on the floor?

Humble yourself. Dame hasn't done anything yet either
