Is this the best Blazer team ever assembled?

I think we have to really consider that this could be the best team ever assembled. I haven't seen a Blazer team ever look this good, feel so confident they will win, than any other years I've watched as a Blazer fan. I've been a fan since 1988, so I missed the championship team from the 70's.

What's your vote?

If Walton and Lucas could handle Erving and McGinnis, they could sure shut down the lesser Aldridge and lessee Batum. Walton owned the paint, which Lopez, Kaman, and especially Aldridge do not.

This team has great history, like when J.J. Hickson arrived to salvage the 2011-12 season, or when Juwan Howard bailed us out of the 2009-10 season. Much as we cherished our heroes and never let them escape, the years have produced many heart-warming come-from-behind tales of courage under adversity under fire. I will not, I can not, compare one hero to another. Who is to say that Ime Udoku, who emerged from Nigeria to try out as a walk-on, only to be the starter by season's start while his father died in preseason, was better than the unheralded Victor Khryapa, who came in halfway through the 2004-05 season from Europe and immediately started the rest of the season? I say, we should celebrate our heroes without trying to compare their greatnesses.

You shut your mouth. Ime Udoka does not belong in the same conversation as those other guys. Ime played hard, left to take a bigger paycheck, but tried to come back. Similar to Blanky. Juwan ditched us to go ring-chasing. JJ didn't want to be a team player. Veektor just...didn't work out.

BTW, did you know that Ime's girlfriend (and baby momma) is Nia Long? Well done, Ime.

No. But Bill Walton was transcendant. Mo is a HoFer. In this case, you seem to be comparing talent/superstardom. In which case you're comparing Dame (eventually) to Bill, and LaMarcus to Mo. Then people like Dave Twardzik (who led the entire league in TS%) against Nic (or maybe Wes)?

I think the top 3 are pretty much wins for the 77 team. And not by small margins.

Then look at the 90-91 team. That might stack up.

I HOPE it is .... I have waited DECADES for a championship from the Blazers. I was a little 1st grader in the early 80's when I was old enough to start loving the Blazers. There are a lot of us that have waited a long, LONG time for this team to be the best ever. So yeah, I really hope they are.

Talent-wise, I think the early 2000's Blazers is an apt comparison.

Nope. Sorry. The 1999-2000 team was insanely talented. Probably the deepest team ever assembled. The biggest difference though, between this current team and that 1999-2000 team, is that we have a true go-to guy. If you put Damian Lillard on that Blazers roster, we don't lose to the Lakers and we probably win the championship. That team lacked a true go-to guy. Sheed could have been that guy, but he didn't have the mindset. Pippen was always a second fiddle. Smith was too old at that point. Damon wanted to be that guy, he needed to be that guy, but he most certainly was not that guy.

I'd put my money on this team beating any other Blazer team if they played on the same court. However greatest team ever assembled has to do something and this squad has only gotten to the 2nd round so far, they have a ways to go to be considered the best.

Probably not. While you can make the LMA/Mo comparison at some point if that happens,I can't think of a way that Dame becomes what Walton was. And while I love our supporting players, none are head-and-shoulders above their 1977 (or 2000, or 1991) counterpart.

Now, 2nd-best? Maybe. If we win 2, "most accomplished?" Sure. "Best" is hard to come by, when you're up against a team that had an all-time transcendant player and another HoFer, both in their absolute prime.

I still think the lockout 1998-1999 team was my favorite though. That team had a ton of heart. I think the series against Utah was my favorite of all time. We were such underdogs in that series. Brian Grant cemented his place in Blazer lore because of that series.

That's my second favorite now. I was actually pissed on the moves we made that summer.

Grant taking the Malone Elbow and going back out immediately with his noes bleeding was the turning point of that series imo.

The moves weren't bad. They made us a legit contender, and I don't think we really lost anything by trading Rider/Jackson/Cato/etc. Getting Pippen and Smith were huge at that time. The problem was making the trades for Davis and Kemp. We should have let Grant leave for his huge contact and just played Jermaine more. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

But actually, it's not that simple. Talent-wise, you'd be very hard-pressed to beat the Sabas-Sheed-Pippen-Smith or the Drexler-Porter-Williams-Kersey-Duckworth teams, or even the Roy-Aldridge-Oden (for all of his 82 games) teams, but this group is really playing together well. So "no" to "is this the best collection of talent?" but "maybe" to "is this the best at functioning together as a cohesive unit?"

(I'm sort of assuming we mean "other than the championship team".)
