Is Wesley Matthews a Ballhog?

I think the point of this thread is not (necessarily) that Wesley is a ballhog, but that one cannot call Roy a ballhog without recognizing Matthews as one, too.

Matthews doesn't handle the ball nearly as much as Roy used to, Usage % only measures the number of possessions used, not the total time with the ball in ones hands. Last year Roy was only assisted on 33% of his scores and this year on 39% of his scores, whereas Matthews is being assisted on 71% of his scores this year with the Blazers, with the ball in his hands significantly less time per possession I'm not surprised he doesn't rack up more assists. Roy was/is considered a bit of a ballhog because he would get the ball on the perimeter and stop the offense with his ISO's or just dribbling away before pulling up and having the ball that long while watching his teammates move or penetrating with the dribble and kicking it to catch and shoot players lends itself to getting a lot more assists, Matthews is more of a catch and shoot or catch and finish player and I know I don't consider his knack for getting open and taking good looks without pounding the ball 'ballhogging'.

I don't think that is a bad thing, though. He's just not a very productive ballhog, at least in terms of PER.

As far as I'm concerned, a "chucker" is someone who shoots more than his scoring efficiency suggests he should. Players like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James shoot a lot, but aren't chuckers, because they should be taking a ton of shots.

Based on that, I don't think Matthews is a chucker. His efficiency is quite good for the amount he scores, which suggests he's not taking more shots than he should.

Sounds like a pejorative. I think he does what the team wants him to do (within his limitations...I'm sure they'd love him to distribute like Deron Is Deron but that's not his skillset). So, you could call him a ballhog or you could call him a shooting guard asked to score by the team.

Exactly. Comparing usage is useless when Roy holds the ball far more time per use than Matthews does. Roy gets more assists because he holds the ball more time, and because he thinks he's the playmaker, while Matthews submits to leadership by the PG, and spends far more time than Roy moving without the ball.

Most of Roy's assists came on kicking it to a 3 pt shooter. We ran the ball offense through Roy, but we don't run it through Matthews. Matthews gets more shots on fast breaks, and by cutting to the rim. He's playing a completely different role. But aside from the game in Utah, he's really played within the offense, not forcing it 1 on 1 like Brandon.
