I think that everyone has had Jan. 15th circled on their calendars for a long time and assumed that something would happen right away. As you said, this discussion that you heard about could just be the precursor to another move.
There are so many things that go into making a trade happen in the NBA. The fact that the Blazers are now in a position to actually do something, doesn't mean that other teams are eager to pull the trigger so far in advance of the deadline. They may be looking for sweeter deals. Also, it's possible that Olshey isn't looking to make a major move during the season. Almost any major move would result in the team having to adjust its style of play to accommodate a new starter and not having any significant practice time to do it. He may want to let this year play out and make his adjustments in the off-season.
