How about utilizing the SNAP system? Rather than providing free meals to all children, increase the monthly SNAP allocation to needy families with school-age children, and even allow those benefits to be utilized to pay for school meals. Children in need receive the benefit, and those whose families are financially capable of bearing the cost of feeding them still do so.
SNAP is how it is done now. Unfortunately this causes delays and inconsistencies and kids miss meals because of it. Many parents who don't qualify for SNAP also don't provide well enough for their kids. This helps to reinforce a cycle of poverty, as studies have shown that kids who are hungry at school don't focus as well, don't behave as well, and suffer lifelong disadvantages as a result.

Not to mention that every republican president seems to cut SNAP funding. Simply mandating that schools provide meals to all children solves that problem and avoids the bureaucracy many on the right seem so eager to complain about, yet also so eager to push poor and minorities into.

...by their parents.

I know, I'm unreasonable and unfeeling, and I need to check my privilege.

I'm sorry--$140/month to feed the children breakfast and lunch? That's $3-$3.50/meal. Does it cost parents $3/meal to feed their children during the summer? If so...why can't they afford that during the school year? If not...why can't they provide meals for their children rather than depending on the school to do so?

They probably get assistance from their local food bank and some funds via welfare.

Sure beats feeding the "defense" machine......
Ironically, this would actually return the government more money to feed the "defense" machine long term. Not that I want the money going there, but this is a great long term investment. It's a simple solution that pays for itself 10k times over.

You're giving too many parents too much credit. Many of these kids go hungry because their parents are focused on spending their money other things (necessary and necessary). That may not sound like good parenting but it is what it is. How many stories have we read where people have to choose rent, utilities, gas, etc over food (or enough food). You have a good idea in concept, but the execution is questionable. Kids are innocent/blameless. Get them fed and pray that investment in their futures pay off......
You're probably right--I foolishly assume that parents actually care about their children's welfare. I can't help my pollyanna mentality.

And I'm sorry for coming across so cynical, but I've just seen far more of it than should ever exist. To some parents, having kids is just a means to selfish ends. I'm a firm believer in the implantation of temporary birth control devices at a young age, with training and certification in adulthood before parenthood is allowed....if ever. AND that would solve the abortion issue.....

Many parents aren't good parents. Most are, but many aren't. And us ignoring those children has shown to be far more expensive and harmful than doing what we can to help them navigate their childhood with as many essential needs as possible.

Im all for providing meals for kids at least through middle school.
Even during the summer certain park districts provide box lunches during the noon hour.

Facebook and AMZN just got wrecked.

Probably fake but.....

Big layoffs probably coming the next few months. Twitter today.

Financial institutions. Hearing big layoffs at The Capital Group today, where my buddy recently left.

Yeah, with interest rates going up, the unemployment rate is going to go up since the two were tied by the FED.

Can't have full employment and no inflation. Take your pick.
