he Bakersfield Jam (24-14) defeated the defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers (27-12) by a score of 104-99 at the Jam Events Center Friday night.
With the game tied at 24 with 1 minute remaining in the opening quarter, Bakersfield went on a 15-0 run to go up 39-24. McNeal's lay-up at the 10:07 mark in the second ended Jam's run and started an 18-3 Vipers run to tie the game at 42 with 4:21 remaining in the half. Vipers outscored the Jam 31-19 in the second period to go into halftime up by a score of 55-50.
Bakersfield outscored Rio Grande Valley 29-21 in the third to take a 79-76 lead into the final period. Tied with 8:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, Derrick Byars hit a three-pointer to give the Jam an 85-82 lead that they would not surrender.
Trey Johnson finished with a team-high 23 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Derrick Byars had a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Stephen Dennis contributed 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting, 6 assists and 3 steals. Los Angeles Clippers assignee, Willie Warren, scored 13 points and in his Bakersfield Jam debut, center Tiny Gallon tallied 2 points in less than 10 minutes of play.
Vipers' Jerel McNeal led all scorers with 27 points, 7 assists and 5 steals. Forward Richard Roby had 23 points and Terrel Harris 14. Patrick Sullivan finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Jam and Vipers complete the season series tomorrow night at the Jam Events Center at 7 p.m.
