Jason Philippi, International Scout, Released by Blazers

I bet the Blazers are just going use this forum for their international scouting instead.

Might be a sign that the Blazers don't see much value in the next few coming years of some of the young bucks overseas?

Seems we have gone through fazes in the NBA where drafting of college players is preferred then to international players and then back.

Maybe Pritchard hired Philippi away.

Another one bites the dust. The Blazers are cleaning house in the scouting department.

Isn't kind of obvious which guys over there are good? They get a lot of media attention. I am guessing the Blazers will pay for a service that everyone else uses and then Neil can get a paid vacation to go visit Spain, Italy or Greece and check them out for himself.

Well, since we don't have a second-round pick until the dawn of the next decade (and haven't bought a pick since KP, iirc), maybe there are fewer instances where a top-flight international scout would be required.

And if we can just get all the better-than-average ones to actually come to Spokane, Zags could pimp them for the Blazers every year pre-draft and get his two cents in. Between him and yuyuza's Rasta idea, we could be set.

I don't think that's true. To give a couple of recent examples: even the Euro-obsessed websites were amazed how hard the Suns worked to bring Goran Dragic over, because they didn't rate him. And there would've been pretty much no way to tell about Giannis Adetokounmpo, because I don't think he was even on YouTube.

The Blazers just seem to be penny-pinching, what with this and the severing ties with the Idaho Stampede...

[And while I'm flattered, and would certainly take any money if offered, I really have no idea. I'm just prepared to look at webpages in Spanish - anything I find is out there on the Web. I have literally never attended a basketball game outside of the US. I didn't even play it before coming over here.]

This is the one I don't get. Back in the day I sent KP a white paper on how to use the D-League according to the then-CBA. It'd be even more applicable with the new one. It's not rocket science, and the more that you see good teams using them to develop talent the more I scratch my head. But whatever. It's easy to say that KP or Miller didn't have a grasp of the long game, but I don't know what a million or two over the course of a year would hurt in the operations budget versus the gains you could potentially get by building D-league affiliate dominance.

Save Batum, We have yet to have one consistent overseas prospect turn out for us. This could be the problem.

I think Claver is a good player and depending on how far back you go, Sabonis comes to mind. Drazen as well. The Greek player Kostas Papanilkolau(sp) turned Felton into TRob with the Knicks trade, so that was a plus.

I'm thinking new age. Not counting the Whitsitt era. I probably should have specified that. And the fact that we traded a player and got someone for him doesn't mean he panned out. Claver hasn't SNIFFED the rotation and will more than likely not last past his 3 year contract. He isn't even a good player on the Spanish national team...

Thank god they released him. I didn't want to see another beheading.

I still like Claver's game. I disagree about his contribution to the Spanish team which is a pretty deep team as well but, I'm in the minority when it comes to Claver and his defensive talent. Stotts likes 3pt shooters for his game plan. Between Nico and Victor, we've got two current era players whether Vic stays or goes. The Felton for Kostas for TRob was a stretch, but I always like to point it out when opportunity arises. Stotts played in europe, he knows the Euro league first hand as do both Nico and Victor. They are cleaning house because to your point, they can do better scouting international talent.
