Jason Quick chat " This excuse of being young has to be dicarded"

this team is on pace for 49-50 wins, we only won 41 last season. if we keep on our current pace that means an improvment and most likely making the playoffs. to me that's taking the next step.

Being that we are 11-11 in our last 22 games, I would say we're on track for 45 wins. We need to get going and put together a win streak or the other teams will and we'll miss out. Somebody's gonna get hot. It better be us.

Tell that to Pau Gasol.
We'd all love an opportunity like that to arise, I'm sure this is especially true for Blazer management. But deals like that aren't commonplace and the other team has to come to the conclusion that they want to tear it all down and start over on their own. KP can't just wave Travis Outlaw and Raef in the Bobs face and expect them to hand over Gerald Wallace.

How is being young NOT an excuse. You got starters that are playing their first NBA season. It takes practice to learn the NBA, it takes time. Not 1 or 2 games, but entire seasons, and then postseasons. Especially for centers.

Believe it or not, everyone who is not a crazy Portland fan has seen a lot of improvement this year vs last year's squad. We also didnt expect Oden to come in and average 20/10, because rookie centers just dont do that.

Why do people keep saying that even though it's not true? Yes, some rookie centers do average 20/10.

I think this season is a disappointment if we fail to make the playoffs.

But I think a big part of our team's mistakes and failures can be traced back to youth.

arbitrary time spans are fun, so instead of perpetuating that let's take a look at the schedule.

did i stretch on some sure, i'm a blazer fan. but i can see 25 more wins fairly easily in there.

We're also 16-11 in our last 27 games, or 10-7 in our last 17 games, so depending on how you want to view it, we're on pace for 45-50 wins. When we win 2 of our next 3, we will again be a .600 team--as we have been all year--which is a 49-win pace.

You're making my point. You have us going on both an 8 game win streak and a 6 game win streak. That is exactly what we'll need to do to make the playoffs. If we don't go on a run, one of the other teams will and we'll be left out.

Seems like every year (when we've made the playoffs), we've had some prolonged winning streak -- even under PJ back in the day, we had a double-digit streak.
Our longest streak has been six games this season. I think it can come, but it's going to be really tough if we keep having these lingering injuries.

so say we lost @ GS and home vs PHX, that leaves with no prolonged winning streak but still with 51 wins and in the playoffs. granted we will drop a couple i think we should win but we will probably win a couple we shouldn't.

One of the other teams going on a run isn't enough. All the teams competing with the Blazers for a playoff spot have to go on a run to leave the Blazers out, assuming the Blazers don't go on a run. There are essentially 9 teams for 8 spots. Unless all the other 8 teams finish ahead of Portland (and all of them aren't ahead of Portland now), Portland is in.

Okay, I guess Shaq and Hakeem probably did. And Kareem too. So you expected Oden to be one of those guys? All those guys had more than 1 year in college and they are discussed as the greatest all-time centers. He only averaged 16 pts in college, why would you expect him to score more points as a rookie in the NBA? Delusions, that why.

Mixum makes as much sense as Jason Quick on good days.

Most of the time, it's more like Canzano.

I mean, he seems like a decent enough dude, but some of the stuff coming out of his mouth is out-and-out wrong.

Talking about the comparisons of last year's team and this year's, and asking who is better:
"The record's the same, but the strength of schedule is much more difficult this year" Not really, JQ. Nice to throw out there, but it's an urban legend. On Jan 23 last year, we were 25-17, right where we are now. The average record of the teams we beat were .474, and the teams we lost to were .590. This year the record of the teams we've beaten were .480 and the teams we lost to were .594. So this year's schedule, based solely on SoS, has been no harder than last year. Then, when we hit the "easy" part of the schedule, we went 16-25 (11-10 home, 5-15 on the road). We had been 17-3 at home, then ended up 28-13. We went from 8-13 on the road during the "good" stretch, to 5-15 for the rest of the season.
"More road wins, more quality wins over teams we never beat" , followed by "They have a lot of quality wins over teams", but then he comes back with the refutation "The team has not won a single road game against the Western Conference playoff-caliber teams"
"They kind of have that maturity, I think. Brandon is better, LMA is better, so we're going to be better b/c of those areas" So wait, do we have a really young team or do we have maturity in our stars, which will make us better in the second half that we were in last year's second half? B/c Brandon and LMA in March 2008 were more mature than in Dec 2007, but it didn't help them a lot in the standings.
"I think if LMA has a goal in mind, he sets his mind and goes for it...they've envisioned a KG type where he can score, defend, distribute, do it all" I didn't hear him say "rebound", which KG has done at an 11.4 clip through his career.
"I don't think the Blazers have made a decision on Raef's contract" KP said it was the "probably the most valuable expiring contract ever" and that it was "more valuable than you probably realize, for the insurance reasons" at the M&G. Maybe Quick's right that they haven't made the decision. But KP said they HAD targeted a player, and whether we used RLEC to get him at the deadline, or got him during the FA season with cap space, they'd get their man.

Other random thoughts...
You know what a fun stat is? Wins over >.500 teams vs. losses to <.500 teams. We're 11-4. We're 14-4 against below-.500 teams, and 11-13 vs. above-.500 teams.
I read in a few articles and team blog posts that people think our offense lost the game last night, b/c we couldn't get the big bucket that normally would come from Blake. Well, J-Bay and Sergio combined for 17 pts, 5 assists and 1 t/o. Our Points per 100 possessions was the 3rd highest we've had in a loss this year (109.47 and just below our average of 110.6). We had 7 turnovers...well below our average of 12 per game.
On average, in our losses we shoot only 3 more FTs per game than 3pointers. In our wins? 6 more.
