Jason Quick On Roy

I'm willing to admit it isn't the ideal stat for a "playing off of the ball" debate, but it, coupled with actual observation, is the closest I can come up with to say that Brandon Roy's game is more similar to Wade/Bryant than it is to Rip Hamilton.

I'd love to see a stat that calculated how much time per possession a player has the ball in their hands. Does it exist?

I went to 82games.com to see where the real difference between Brandon last year and this year was (granted large sample versus small sample isn't totally useful, especially with all of the flux in rotations) and I saw a few surprising trends.

this year: http://www.82games.com/0910/09POR5.HTM
last year: http://www.82games.com/0809/08POR5.HTM

The biggest difference I see is a jump from 66% to 79% of his shots being long jumpers, which is pulling down his overall field goal percentage. A couple of other items jump out. He's being assisted on 50% of his long shots this year versus last 35% last year, but last year he was assisted on 27% of his close shots where he hasn't been assisted at all on his close shots this year and his percentages are waaaaay down from a year ago (45% now versus 58% last year). Perhaps the real remedy isn't him handling the ball more, but him being able to cut into the lane and receive passes near the hoop.

Jason said he brought up to Roy the knock on him as a player. That he doesn't play as well off the ball. Brandon agreed but then made the case. "Why should I (being so great) have to work off the ball?" "Do you see guys like Lebron, Kobe and Dwyane being asked to change their game"

And there you have it. Brandon has annointed himself already. He is great, just ask him. So great he has no other areas of his game to improve. He's in a box and he doesn't want to have to come out of that box. You know what Brandon if that is really your mindset, maybe this team does have it's limitations of how far it can go. This team needs you to be more forward thinking that. This team needs you to want to improve in all areas of your game. This team NEEDS you to improve in all areas of your game. INCLUDING OFF THE BALL!! What makes you so great internally, that makes you feel you shouldn't have to work on this? Or any other area of your game that might need to be worked on?

Come out of your box Brandon. This team, organization needs you.. They have taken care of you and now take care of them.

You're unfucking believable... Roy is one of the most unselfish superstars in the league and has always been a total class act. In what alternate universe, should the best player on your team handle the ball LESS? That's the only question he's asking and it seems like a pretty good one. And by asking that question, he isn't saying he isn't going to work on his game - he's just asking the question.

Jason Quick just wrote this in today's article:
Roy led the Blazers with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting and continued to be a playmaker, tying Miller for the team lead with seven assists. Roy, who said he is still adjusting to playing with a three-guard lineup, said he is trying to learn how to remain aggressive without handling the ball as much, while also remembering to keep his teammates involved.

"I'm just trying to stay unselfish, but still stay aggressive to make plays," Roy said.

He's adjusting, trying to adapt, so it's pretty fucking obvious he's working on his game.

And there you have it. Brandon has annointed himself already. He is great, just ask him.

I don't need to ask Roy. I can ask the coaches who've voted him into the allstar game for two straight years. I can ask the city of Portland which has made him the face of their franchise. I can ask the national media, several of which have said he's already a superstar in this league. I can ask any of his teammates and they'll tell me this is his team - He's the leader, he calls the player meetings, he calls people out when they aren't giving 100% in practice. Or I can ask the Blazers front office who annointed Roy as great with the contract they gave him. But I don't need to ask anyone, since I've seen him fucking play.

"Fans" like you are a fucking joke.

Now I'll let you all get back to describing how to use brackets.

EASY NOW EVERYONE....

You all need to slow down and hear the entire Quick interview. What RoyIsClutch posted was the very last statement Quick made but there was a lot more said. Sorry I would transcribe it for you but I don't type that fast. You need to listen to it before this gets twisted any further.

Again, here is the link - http://www.955thegame.com/Shows/Wheels_At_Work/

The Quick interview is at the 19:20 mark and the start of the Roy comments are about 3 mins later.

Wanna give a very brief summary, then, for those of us at work?

Roy isn't sure about the 3 guard lineup.

Roy realizes that he needs to sacrifice more for the team to be successful.

Roy told Nate that he wants the ball in his hands more. Nate told Roy to be aggressive and demand the ball. Come off screens harder. Express his authoritaaay! (Actually Eric Cartman says that but in this case it seemed to fit)

Direct words to Quick Mags:

"Why should I (being so great) have to work off the ball?" "Do you see guys like Lebron, Kobe and Dwyane being asked to change their game"

There is nothing selfish about this?

Sounds like pure logic to me, although it's obviously NOT what he said unless he can vocalize parenthesis.

Ron with the ball in his hands is the strongest weapon this team has, and right up there with anyone else in the league you want to mention. He's made himself one of the best in the world at it. This team is a lottery team if he left today.

To say to him "That's nice, but we've overpaid an aging veteran PG on the decline who we don't dare ask to sacrifice his own touches" so can you just go stand in the corner while this 1 and out master dribbles around and jacks up 8' airballs", is rude and unwise.

Of course he can vocalize parentheses, and all other forms of punctuation too.

It's why it's in parenthesis. But those are great players. And he is comparing himself to them.

As do most "experts" and analysts, and coaches and players.

Except he never anally-raped anyone, never gave his wife an STD, didn't accept illegal gifts in college, so we're talking professionally only.

You don't know that. He might have been comparing himself to them in terms of anal rape.

BTW all of the greats had the same attitude, you have to have a major ego to be the best in sports.

All greats at one time or another had to adjust their thinking to win championships as well.

Thanks for posting the link Sly. As I told you, I probably should have did the same when I posted this thread.

I understand Quick has a podium to speak, but he's tryin to sell newspapers! I wouldn't take anything that tool says at face value.

Question was that part of the Kobe in Colorado thing? The anal rape? Or is it a seperate occurrence or something LeBron did? I'm quite serious I never bothered to look that into the Colorado thing.

The comical thing is that Lebron, Wade, and Kobe have all become much better players by learning to play off the ball and trust their teammates over the last couple of years.

Nate told Roy to be aggressive and demand the ball. Come off screens harder.

For once I agree with Nate apparently says here.....No one is saying that Roy has to be a spot up shooter or shouldn't have the ball in his hands, you could still have Miller initiate the offense and have Roy coming off screens, it actually should work better for him....harder for double teams to focus on him, what are they going to have two players chasing him around screens? It is much easier to double a guy when he is standing at the top of the key with the ball in his hands, not so easy when he is moving...

I think it also makes it easier for Roy to attack the basket....Miller is a good passer, can drive and put pressure on the defense, Roy gets the ball and can either take a open jumpshot or ATTACK the basket...likely scoring, getting fouled or dishing to a teamate for an easy basket....

as for "his touches", he just needs to call for the ball, that is what Kobe, LeBron & Wade do. Let the team (and PG) do thier thing and then when he feels he needs to get his touches, get a shot etc...call for the damm ball....

I disagree that Wade and James have learned to play off of the ball. They both dominate the ball on their respective teams. Bryant does play off-the-ball more now, but not in the 4th quarter. :dunno:

Post-game interview w/Roy:
MB: "the 3 guard starting lineup has worked well so far. It's changed things. you've maybe been the one who's had to sacrifice the most. Is this all going well so far? Obviously wins and losses it is. Is the adjustment going well?"

Roy:"Yeah, I think, you know I'm still trying to improve with uh. coming off screens and playing off the ball. You know, again, whatever position coach puts me in on the floor I'm going to try to do my best at it. This is a new one for me, but I'm trying to improve each game and I feel like I got a better rhythm in the second half tonight which I hope can carry over to next game."

No parentheses or brackets.

It was encouraging to see Brandon get involved offensively in the third quarter. In the first half, he was just passing up a lot of wide-open shots. Second half, they called some plays for him, and he got it going a bit. We need a close tight game so Brandon is reminded of how much we'll need him.
