Mike Rice is NOT a racist. And I am NOT just saying this. This guy is like my crazy old uncle and I have been by his side for almost 14 years now. Know him inside and out. He grew up in Detroit. Look back at his old HS photos and he's one of the few white guys in 'em. He has been surrounded by "other" types of people his whole life. We bullshit and joke around on the daily and I know for a fact he doesn't have a racist bone in his body. Quality dude.

And as far as the whole drunk jokes, I throw em out there about him when we are all together and everybody laughs. But I can tell you he isn't. He'll have one Bloody Mary when we go out to dinner and thats about it. Been on Bourbon Street with him many times. That dude is in control when it comes to that.

Does he say shit sometimes that makes you say ,"WOW!", yes. But he is not a racist.

This. Thanks hcp for clearing that up. I was a bit perplexed by people saying that shit.

He really deserves this and I'm happy for him but I feel like the first little piece of the All-Chemistry Team just fell off.

I feel the same. Hopefully Stotts will be able to emulate Popovich, who has lost many many assistants, and soldier on with some new blood.
 
I said something totally racist to myself today without even meaning to. I was working on a Kia and had to transfer a rubber seal from the old bumper to the new bumper I was installing. The seal has all black retainers except for one. This seal could be mild confusing to install as it looks like it could clip on either way but would be technically backwards.

At one end of the seal there is a single white clip. This is on the passenger side of the car and the "right" side of the car vs "left"

I removed the seal to reinstall later and noted to myself that "white is right"

Thank God nobody could hear my thoughts.

Yes, this is a lucky break, especially for our defense. If Vanterpool and Triano both leave, that will be 2 jobs open paying a half-million per year each. Olshey can find replacements at least as good as them, especially with many former head coaches unemployed. Portland is now a more desirable reputation than when those 2 were hired.

Do you want another Buck Williams? The best place for a rookie in the coaching staff is where Hersey Hawkins has dwelled for several years, shagging balls until he develops any coaching talent to get promoted. Which in his case apparently won't happen.

Hawkins, a former NBA star, does not have the title or pay of an Assistant Coach. That's the right level for any rookie in our coaching staff. The last time we made the mistake of giving a rookie the title was Buck Williams. Any new Assistant Coach should have years of coaching experience.

I will admit, like myself he will comment on things more culturally, not racially. Nic and Rudy had talked to us once out for dinner about the hatred between the two countries. I can vouch, he has no hatred towards anybody though.
 
I think my best racial crack was when we were playing the Wolves about 4 years ago and they only had 1 black guy on the court and I screamed that they were playing their HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH squad!
 
Portland used to run a D-League affiliate team called the Stempede in Boise, ID. We had an arrangement for coach Mike Peck to run our exact system so that players could know plays if they were sent down to work on game.

I'd look for him to be a candidate for Asst. Coach. No inside info, just know the opportunity exists for reconnection.

That 'connection' did not really work out well. That only lasted 1 year, and then Portland severed the relationship last summer. The Stampede were sold to the Jazz, and will now be playing in Utah starting next year.

Didn't Peck coach the Stampede 2 years? Nevertheless, he wasn't good enough to be our assistant coach. He was a high school coach right before coaching the Stampede.
