The Trail Blazers better start taking care of the boards http://www.csnnw.com/pages/dwightjaynes/

Fans have a way of overlooking problems when their team wins. And Monday night, as the Trail Blazers were the envy of every team in the NBA (hey, getting to play Orlando WITHOUT Dwight Howard, a guy who doesn't miss many games...) a constant problem almost got them beat.

Even though Howard sat out and 6-foot-6 Brandon Bass started at center for the Magic, Orlando outrebounded Portland 39-36. The Blazers still managed to win, thanks to 18 Orlando turnovers -- but in the long term, rebounding continues to be a real problem for the Trail Blazers.

I'm going to bring this up again one more time, but if Portland was using Gerald Wallace and Brandon Roy in the starting lineup, the rebounding would be much better. Matthews went 32 1/2 minutes Monday night without a rebound and ranks 122nd in the league among guards in rebounds per 48 minutes. (Roy, by the way, ranks two notches lower but post-surgery will do better. Even just a little healthier than he was early in the season, Roy is a better rebounder than Matthews and his career stats reflect that.)

Is Roy going to defend as well as Matthews? No. Not a chance. But Portland's team defense is going to have to improve a lot, anyway, and Wallace moving into the starting lineup would shore that up quite a bit.

Getting outrebounded every night, which the Trail Blazers have been doing, is eventually going to get you beat most of the time against good teams.

is that better big guy? dont wanna post an article. considering half the board does it. you single me out.

does Jaynes get mad when you post his whole article in here? Would seem that traffic isnt going to his site. I know its free and all. Just wondering.

Jaynes and MIXUM are kindred spirits, complaining about the one cloud in otherwise sunny skies.

If the Blazers split this road trip, I'll be thrilled, and all they have to do is beat Charlotte to accomplish that goal.

Jaynes is probably just happy that someone is reading his bitter rants.

 I gotta say Jaynes gets pumped in here a lot. Whats in it for you Mixum? Do you get a cut?

thought I must admit I didnt read any of it. I just scanned to see if there was a link, and asked. And I noticed the "No Pity" reference, but have no idea what the context was.

I think you guys are doing Jaynes a disservice. His ability to control a bunch of monkeys to produce, consistently, this kind of topic specific subject matter is earth shattering in the biology and psychology fields. The man deserves a Nobel prize for his work with primates.

ya know wheels.... quietly (for a mod) you try to add lots of gasoline on the fire. im just posting an article that i feel is right on the money and you have to try and attack me in the wheels subtle way.

dang... I'm.... sorry? :dunno:

Rebounding is very important to winning, period. If you out rebound your opponent and you shoot a decent percentage, you will win a vast majority of your games. It's too bad both of those things are a crapshoot these days.

I do agree with this. I cant remember who said it, but about 5 years ago someone said "The one thing you can never do too much is rebound, you can dribble, pass, shoot too much.. but never rebound too much."

I agree with Jaynes. Rebounding needs to improve. But playing devil's advocate......... a small aggressive line-up that gets less rebounds, may also cause more turnovers. So it may balance out. (Plus you get one more shooter in the game for offense)

At the same time, it smacks of pulling your goalie in hockey; sure, you have one more offensive player, but your defense will suffer. Not as bad as in hockey, but still not great. Wallace is an advantage in that he can shoot okay and is physical defensively. But even so, he can't replace Camby for rebounding.

I think that was Kevin Love at his graduation. Very prescient, I must say!

whoah his post actually got deleted. Sorry Mixie, actually didnt mean for that to happen lol

I like that a few of the mods are starting to feel their juice. The upcoming mod wars should be epic.

oh if you only knew the half of it :devilwink:

If the first act of the Mod Wars were to ban MIXUM and PapaG, they'd be over pretty quick. :ghoti: Remove the guy everyone hates, and the guy who loves to bitch about the mods, and your war is over.

That would be too complicated. Just insinuate that they have WMDs and watch the job being done for you!

the clone wars .... i mean the mod wars have begun.

I'd suggest getting a couple more allies before these wars start

i dont sweat these mods. lots are the same cry babies they were as posters before mods. there are a few good mods and denny does a good job. but imo the mods here need to be cut down. i would nominate ed-o to decide. hes the only one who is level headed and fair.

anyway papa g, wheels and others have done a great job destroying this thread making it about mixum. i just posted a jaynes article. you guys as always took it to another level without even my opinion given. maybe you are the problem. facts are facts.

I apologize. I was under the impression that every thread started by you was open season, and that the plagiarized article that is now deleted was merely a way of initiating the ensuing chaos.

I'd comment on the thread, but I don't know what it was about since the post got deleted.

well fortunately I'm not a Blazers mod so I would hope I'm not on the chopping block. Dodged a bullet there.

I think the rebounding is a big concern, as is the defense- we should be much better at both. Our frontline is decimated, but Camby and Wallace are strong rebounders.

Jaynes' observation is, or ought to be, glaringly obvious. What a weird thing to start a flame war over.

Comment on basketball, everyone. Please.

Ed O.

While rebounding is important, it is worth noting that of the Top 10 teams in rebounding rate, only 6 of them are/will be in the playoffs.

4) Minnesota
5) LA Clippers
7) Sacramento
7) Charlotte

won't be in the playoffs.

Portland is tied at 19th with Atlanta and Boston.
