Free Agent Jerami Grant 5/160

I don’t think much of anything seems pretty clear until we see what happens with trades and exceptions.
That's what people have been saying since Cronin took over, right?

The Payton signing STILL doesn't make sense, although I am delighted we got some picks out of it.

Maybe it will all make sense as we lie on our death beds, looking back at the Cronin regime.

<20% of cap for your 2nd-best non-rookie deal player? Not a crusher at all. Were there better uses of this money in a vacuum? Sure. But Grant's value + Dame Tax = reasonable.

Now, if you think that 3M overpays for Nurk, and for Simons and for Grant, and maxing Dame adds up to limited flexibility, you're not wrong.

That was one of the few signings I liked--having Hart and GP2 both available in a playoff seems obviates 2 of the bigger weaknesses our team had.
(Narrator: "But they traded both at the Deadline, and didn't make the playoffs.")

Busy day. Just catching up. This is not great but it certainly could be worse.
It will be fine because its backloaded. Cba will kick in and this will not be an albatross.
But we need more.

He’s making about 7 mil too much per year, but with the cap going up and up and up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this considered a decent contract in year 3,4 and 5

it is an overpay, but as long as grant is healthy the contract won’t be an albatross.

LOL. Great minds think alike!

Dame is the greatest Blazer ever, trading him after overpaying for an average wing, instead of just moving both of them would be a mistake and make no sense. Bringing up every bad move ever made isn’t necessary, every single statement made in a sports forum doesn’t need to be taken literally to the point we are talking about 40-45 years ago. It would be MASSIVELY stupid and considering it involves the franchises best player ever it would rank very high. No one gives a shit about overpaying a bunch of scrubs in 2016 and fucking our cap compared to dealing the best player ever after signing his buddy. Grant makes zero sense at his age compared to the rest of the roster if Dame is not also on the team.

Not to mention they are buddies, he recruited him, was just in Paris wiyh him last week. Dame stays

FVV at 3 and $130? That’s like … a crap ton … $43+ million per?!
And they have GTJ (UFA in a year) at SG and paid up for Poeltl at $20 million per and OG and Siakam as UFA in a year … with Siakam reportedly chasing teams away … and their future — Scottie Barnes.

I’m going to guess the iceberg is thawing.

A: "We said it was going to be at least this."
B: "That is a bad deal."
A: "Well, it's more. I told you."
B: "And, yes, it's worse than what we thought it would be."

What's done is done, but that doesn't make it a good value.

no, fvv went to the Rockets, didn't stay with Toronto..... who now need a PG.

woohoo !!
1 good blazer signed, now the Blazers need a few more

I hadn't seen this until I read the ESPN report:
Already seen as a plus at the defensive end, Grant has steadily grown into a reliable scorer and shooter; his 5.7 3-point attempts per game last season was also a career high. He was one of the top wings on the market this offseason.

It will make sense if the Blazers make it past the first round of the playoffs.

Maybe. We'd have to ask if we'd have done it without him on the team, and we'd have to consider that we'll be paying him a LOT of money when he's 34+ years old. I'm not willing to give up the future to make it into the second round... fortunately we haven't done that with our last couple of lottery picks, and we shouldn't be doing it with re-signing our current players, either.

I'm not so sure. We could have had cap space next season.. we are currently sitting at about $10m in practical cap space in 2024-25, and without that $30m being added we could have had a chance to make a splash next summer OR to take contracts on for additional value, etc. Now those options are just about dead to us.

It helps on the floor, of course, and it keeps Dame happy, evidently, and Portland seems unwilling to add ANY big guys so... who knows?
the per year number is fine for me. Probably starts around 27 mil.

length of the deal is an issue, though. and we have 0 roster balance yet again.

Well, this may make it more difficult to secure Cam Boozer or Cooper Flagg in 2026. Any of those two next to Scoot-Sharpe-Murray would make for a promising future.

Otherwise, none of Portland's moves and projected moves address its core weaknesses from last season. Even a Simons for OG trade, while helpful, would not fix the majority of issues (which is depth, interior defense, rebounds, and POA defense).

Cronin may promise Dame a contender but he risks building neither a contender or a successful rebuild around Scoot+Sharpe. That's the big risk I see here.

Dame is staying. That's all I care about.
Grant still needs to be taken in context to changes in the salary cap coming up.
I don't think the Grant deal has any impact in the Dame situation.

Grant has shown in the past that he cares more about money than winning. He just got his BIG bag today. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now that he got his money he’ll revert back to being the injury riddled player he’s been much of his career.
