Joe Cronin - self-made NBA 'capologist'

Cronin sounds like a must-have kind of guy. Glad we've got somebody who knows all the nuances of the salary cap.

He was the driving force behind crafting the complicated, front-loaded contract offer to restricted free agent Wesley Matthews that was drawn up in a way that would prevent the Utah Jazz from matching it. And, most recently, he helped the Blazers acquire J.J. Hickson off waivers. Teams that are over the salary cap -- like the Blazers -- typically cannot put in a waiver claim. But when the Blazers traded Marcus Camby to Houston for two players who made roughly $2.5 million less than he did, the Blazers acquired a "trade exception" for that amount. Cronin knew the CBA allowed teams over the cap to use trade exceptions to make waiver claims, so the Blazers swept in at the last second to nab Hickson
Very Niice Work. Well we got our replacement for Penn, Now if we can only find a GM...

Cronin agrees that we will have 20-25 mil in cap space this summer. I'm still curious how he and many others believe this. Would this be the case if we renounce Hickson, Freeland and Batum?

Exactly. Hickson and Batum account for 11.2M in cap holds. If those are ignored, then sure, we have between 20-25M.

Well then why even suggest we will have that much cap space? Obviously Portland will exercise their options on Hickson and Batum. Unless of course they excercise them and won't match other offers that maybe "toxic offers".

I'm not so sure they'll offer the Q.O. to Hickson, or if they do, if they don't end up renouncing him anyhow if a better target is available. As nice as Hickson has been, filling the back-up PF spot isn't exactly the biggest offseason priority, is it?

You say backup PF, I say starting post alongside Aldridge.

I agree. I think Aldridge could play center and Hickson at PF. Those two would be a good combo. They both can score and Aldridge can draw out the other team's centers. Also, the other team can't put their center on Aldridge; thinking they will stop any inside post scoring since both players, play well with their back to the basket. We have Rhino as the back up for PF and Pryzbilla and Thomas for the centers. It's what we have now; but Hickson has only been on our team for about a month. I could only imagine how good those two would be with a full training camp and a good coach to utilize them better.

Blast from the past post.
Lots of guys here need to swallow their pride & give Cronin the credit & respect he deserves.
