he also has burned bridges with players/agents and has shit relationships. i have a feeling his removal wasn't exactly mutual as much as he was forced out behind the scenes.
I hadnt heard that take but wouldn't surprise me. Im sure he's aggressive and can pester/be a challenge. He always said what was on his mind, but so did the guy he replaced, Red.

Not necessarily. Blazers need to keep 14 players on the roster. Dumping some minimum players just means you need to pick up the same number to keep your roster full. Now you can dump all 3 and pick up 3 guys with less tenure in the league so their minimum salary is less, but it's a lot harder to dump 3 guys than it is to dump 1.

I think an easier path is trading Nurk or Roco for someone that makes less. You can do it easily with RoCo to Cleveland for Cedi Osman or something like that. Need to find the right landing spot because I'm sure there are teams that could use RoCo.

The minimum salary players the Blazers sign to replace those guys can have a prorated salary that counts for far less against luxury tax than an 82 game minimum contract. So just switching those players might get the Blazers under the tax, if they find a trade partner, likely under the tax, to take on those minimum salary guys.

minimum salary cap charge is 1.67M. Blazers have 4: Zeller, McLemore, Snell, Smith. They also have Elleby at 1.52M

Replacing 3 of those with vets signed later in the season would have pro-rated contracts applied. Say it's 3 replaced. That would currently be 5M in exiting salary, putting the Blazers 2M below. So the pro-ration would have to be less than 2M. That means Blazers couldn't do this till less than 40% of the season remained; sometime around the 50-55 game mark

now that is for veterans. If Portland went for guys who have never played in the NBA before, the minimum is 900K. Pro-rating one of those contracts while replacing a vet, say for half a season, would knock 1.2M off the cap

Watching it at the moment. Will post any important things said.

I love this Cronin guy. You could tell he was nervous but its also easy to tell he's smart and good vibes. Also sounds willing and able to get creative re: trades. Seems he's more open minded than Neil who pretty much only made straight forward moves and avoided as much risk as possible.

Cronin is definitely likeable. Night and day difference with the previous guy

probably take a while to start gauging how competent he is

He definitely passed the first test (the PC). BUT, at the risk of pulling an ABM here, he's gotta act like we're all from the state of Missouri.

"show me".

I like this guy alot. Seems thoughtful, not quick to react.
No one seems like a “know it all”, which is great to me as well.
When did NO ever say he has things to learn and improve on?

oh yeah. NO who????
I agree. I like what I heard and his demeanor. quite different from Neil’s aggressive car salesman approach. But how’s he going to be negotiating when the going gets tough?

Time will tell soon, im sure, as they all know we need to improve.
I hope he is a beast behind closed doors. :)

The best negotiators that I know all have a demeanor similar to Joe.
The car salesmen types are talked about more - but most people HATE working with them. In the long run, they are less effective.

I'm not sure how he behaves in his home life should be our concern here.... :pimp:

transparent. i see a lot of similarities between him and chauncey in their demeanor.

Joes seem to be level headed and realistic, he knows it will take a methodical approach to get things rolling again.

Yes on car salesman but people can have the gift of gab without coming off that way.

The question will be, does Joe have the gift of gab? Or is he a Rich Cho? There is a HUGE difference there.

Both these dudes are as Vulcanized as you can get, that may or may not a good thing.

Im all for Joe getting the job permanently if proves himself during this season.

Job security actually give Joe a headstart on swinging for the fences...I took from his interview that he'll make some moves and fill some roster holes. If he pulls off a level changing trade he'll be in the driver's seat for the job long term...if not they'll probably find a guy who will swing for the fences

Does Joe need a blockbuster home run trade to prove himself though?

Cronin is my favorite GM ever already...I loved that Chauncey beat him in the state championship in Denver in HS.......best front office I could hope for...I hope he keeps the job

Can't believe Joe hired Billups after that!

Joe Cronin has an impressive resume. He played college ball, he then earned his masters while working as a graduate assistant at the University of Denver. Then he has worked his way up through the Blazers organization, step by step. This is a basketball guy with a mind. That doesn't mean he'll be a great GM necessarily but he's a very very qualified GM. I really liked his demeanor in the press conference.
