For baseball lovers, he was a superstar. The guy was a stud and an ace in every sense of the word. If I could compare him to, say, basketball superstars... he was on the Chris Paul side of stardom. He was so much freaking fun to watch pitch... just devastating stuff... but he played it with so much joy... Joy that I played the game as as a little leaguer... you just don't see that anymore... it pisses me off... waking up to this it just tore my heart. There's so few of these guys ever in the league. Genuinely a good dude. God damnit.

He only started 73 games... which I was really surprised at... but he had some of the nastiest stuff I'd ever seen.

I was reading about this. Super sad. I'm not a baseball fan, but I had heard of him.
 
Really tragic...only 24 years old and really talented....RIP and for those thrill seekers out there that like high speed racing....learn from this and wear a life jacket....not wearing one cost him his life

Article says he died from trauma, not drowning. How would a life jacket have helped?

Newsman said he was not wearing one...didn't say how he died ..I just heard it but neither you nor I know if would have helped but he didn't wear one...

That hit a jetty at full speed and were thrown full speed from the boat and landed on the jetty. Life jacket would likely have been useless in this case.
 
Barring injuries, Fernandez was on a HOF pace. He was THAT fucking good. At 24. His early-career stats were on an amazing trajectory. Baseball lost a star.

So did humanity.
 
Beyond tragic really. Maybe the best young pitcher in the game and one of the best liked players around. His girlfriend is pregnant with their first child. Hernandez was probably going to get the a huge contract after next year that would have set his family up for life. Also saved his mother's life during their boatlift from Cuba. I hope the Marlins set up a fund for his loved ones.

Exactly. To put it in perspective... he and Mike Trout are the only two that people were saying "They are writing their HOF careers out right now."

That fucking sucks.

All true. Easily the best young arm... brightest career... you just DO NOT see this in pro sports.... It's just shocking.

Yeah, he died from the trauma, not drowning... Which, I can't even imagine. Life jackets wouldn't have saved him from this, unfortunately. :(

Star players have died, but not usually right as they're entering their prime. Derrick Thomas. That dude was awesome. Such a great player. Such a tragic way to die, but he was 33 when he died, so he was on the decline.

Maybe Len Bias? But he had never even played one game.

I wasn't trying to be all-or-nothing with that comment... I do know it's happened before... Roberto Clemente is one. But it's just SO rare. He was 24... TWENTY-FOUR. He technically wasn't even in the prime (though the age of prime is subjective). Just nuts.

Dee Gordon, arguably the closest friend to Jose Fernandez, had never hit a home run this year in 300+ at bats

On the 2nd pitch of the game, he hit one. Yeah, I cried. You can't write shit like that. I urge you to find video of it. It was beautiful.

It was an amazing tribute to his fallen team mate. He was crying as he rounded second base. Just really emotional stuff.

Dee Gordon also bats left handed. Jose Fernandez batted right handed... first pitch of the game Dee hit from the right side with Jose's helmet. Then Dee turned back over to the left side and the very next pitch hit that home run. He was crying around first base even. I had tears about the same time.

What I loved the most is that the Miami announcers said nothing throughout the whole thing. Just let it go... made it even that much more powerful.
 
The more I hear about the guy, the more depressing it becomes. When you've got members of the media crying on national TV, you know the dude was genuinely a really good guy. So so so sad.

This is why the Baseball Writers' Association -- the owners of the Most Valuable Player Award, the Cy Young Award and the Rookie and Manager of the Year Awards -- would be well-served to create an award to honor Fernandez and provide an annual remembrance.

The Jose Fernandez Award could be given to the young player who, in his first years in the big leagues, best exemplifies Fernandez's spirit of joy and passion, in the way he plays and treats his peers and fans. Players in their first three years in the big leagues could be eligible. Jose Altuve would've been a great candidate for that sort of award in his first years in the big leagues, or Mookie Betts, or Francisco Lindor, the type of people who are young leaders, in the way that Fernandez was.
