This is one of the things I love about Portland. It's small enough, and friendly enough, to have these sorts of encounters with local "celebrities". Back in the early 1990s, I used to regularly run into Chris Dudley on late night trips to the local grocery store. Dude always had a shopping cart full of milk. Evidently loading up on the calcium after he broke his ankle. I used to also run into Jermaine O'Neal a lot when he was here. I remember one time I held the door for him at the local Mail Boxes, Etc. as he was carrying in all his Christmas presents to ship to his family back home. At the time, he was just a teenager (a VERY rich teenager) and was very friendly and polite. Every time I watch the Portlandia "Spirit of the 90s" video, I spot someone else I know. I think I'm up to 6 now.

I only have a few encounters with the Blazers as a fan before I started covering the team. One such encounter was immediately after we traded for Damon. The Blazers used to practice at Sports Nation, which is now Club Sport. I had a membership, so the day of his first practice with the team I went down there just to get a glimpse. I found Jermaine and Kelvin Cato in the weight area just hanging out. I think I was like 15 or 16 at the time. I asked them for an autograph, which they did, but Jermaine flat out said in front me, "why are all these damn kids here?" This stung a little bit because Jermaine was only a couple years older than me at the time. Just seemed kind of dickish, but I imagine they were annoyed that people were bugging them during practice.

Another example was also at Sports Nation. Brian Grant was coming back from an injury and he wasn't with the team. I was there late at night one day and Brian was on one of the courts working with a member of the Blazers staff. I waited until he was done and leaving the locker room. He was the nicest guy I've ever met.

Back in the 70s, I was coaching a Pop Warner football team. It was during Walton's second year with the Blazers, he didn't live very far away from where we practiced every late afternoon. So I invited him to come to a practice spend a few minutes with the boys some afternoon. He showed up the next day driving his modified B210 Datsun. Datsun was the name before Nissan and all the cars were small. The 210 was a 2 door just right for Walton.
He had the front seat removed and sat in the back set to drive. Well anyway he show up driving this thing right onto the field, stop and unfolded from this 210 while the boys stood stark still, watching this happening.
Walton was great with the kids, it was a hit. He often had difficulty speaking in those days but not this time, I guess he was in his element.

I worked for Adidas up until recently and back in '97 when Jermaine signed with Adidas he came in to get fitted with some basketball shoes. the guy seemed annoyed the entire time he was there..almost standoffish.. never liked him much after that.
