KP Just Said Oden Out 7-10 Days

Welcome to our community

Let's get back to the subject at hand please...

Oden needs to get scoped to remove the fragment from his knee. This much is clear. Now that we have that settled...what hospital do you think the procedure should be performed at?

Me thinks he needs to go to those same Indian healing waters (eastern Oregon) that Bill Walton dipped himself into. LOL!

My goodness. So much drama. Has anyone here actually examined Greg Oden? Has anyone seen the results of his MRI? Guess what, even if you had, you would be forbidden by privacy laws from discussing it in a public forum without his consent.

So, let's just leave the doctoring to the doctors and let them do what their expensive med school educations, years of residence and state approved medical licenses gives them the knowledge and the right to do.

That was all I was attempting to do - admittedly in a rather brusque manner. But hey, if someone can give unsolicited medical advice online, why can't I give my unsolicited opinion of that advice? Seems perfectly fair to me.

BNM

For someone jumping on posters because they aren't doctors and don't know what they are talking about, then you make that comment.

If I had seen Oden's MRI results, I would spew them all over this site as I am not under any doctor patient privledge or subject to privacy laws.

Are you a lawyer?. . . then stop making opinions about the law . . . kind of annoying isn't it . . .

While obscenities are allowed, directing them at a fellow poster I wouldn't think would be.

That isn't allowed. But the poster in question didn't say "Fuck you" or anything. He said "Shut up" and emphasized it with an obscenity, which is the typical use of an obscenity...amplifying a statement. "Shut up" is allowable, so amplifying it via an obscenity is also allowed. It was the equivalent of "REALLY shut up."

You are entitled to your opinion, but so is he. Telling him not to post his opinion is crossing the line in my eyes, saying he can't post his opinion, but you can.

I don't think there's any rule against that. A poster can tell another person not to give their opinion, but that person doesn't have to listen. Saying "Go away," "stop posting" or "shut up" are all rude, but none of them need be obeyed.

Ok, so I can tell a poster or mod for that matter, as long as it's not mod duties of course, to shut the fuck up or to stop fucking posting if I don't like their opinion or whatever. They don't have to do it so it's ok? That's good to know. I most likely wouldn't do something like that,,,,,hmmm, a couple posters do come to mind! :)

Truthfully, that might not be technically in the rules, but by the nature of a board I'd think it's counter productive to allow that.

Yup. This forum tries to be a bit more laid-back in terms of what people can say. It's rude, but no ruder than other allowed forms of speech like "I fucking hate your opinion" or "That was pretty dumb post."

Truthfully, that might not be technically in the rules, but by the nature of a board I'd think it's counter productive to allow that.

I think it would be counter-productive to actually stifle other people's voices. But telling someone to shut up doesn't stifle their voice. No one is under any obligation to actually shut up. And, to be honest, I've never seen anyone choose to shut up. ;)

Honestly, here's the way I look at it.

I like the lax rules. Sure, it means occasionally you have to deal with people posting stuff you don't like (such as the "Shut the fuck up" comment). However, if someone just uses that occasionally to make a point, it's probably not really a big deal anyways. If someone were to use it consistently, people would soon start to tune them out. If everyone tuned someone out for posting stuff like that, the poster is getting what they deserve.

On a related note, use the ignore feature please. If people are "trolling" they do it because they get responses. If people could restrain themselves from responding, the troll will go away.

Here's a helpful piece of advice: It's possible to give your opinion without demonstrating to all of us the depth of your ignorance.

Is that why you initiated personal attacks with at least two posters over the past few days? That screamed "ignorance" to me, especially when you can't even frame my opinion in the correct context.

"Shut up" isn't an insult (the obscenity is a separate matter...obscenities are allowed). It's not polite, but it's equivalent to saying "Stop posting." Someone can say it...it doesn't mean you have to listen to them. A personal attack is a negative characterization of who you are as a person.

As to whether people look for fights, I'm sure that plenty of people do. That's pretty common on discussion forums. Some people just want to chat pleasantly, some people hope to gain/provide information and some people want to argue (or arguing's more genteel cousin "debate").

In other words, anything goes from now on. Game on.

Reading comprehension fail.

I haven't seen any of the personal attacks cleaned up over the past two days. You guys set the tone of conversation here, and Minstrel's post quite clearly defines what is acceptable.

It's like deja vu...

You haven't seen it, so therefore it hasn't happened? OK. Wrong, but whatever.

Context matters. Good faith matters.

BNM posted "shut the fuck up" because he was tired of seeing people making uninformed medical posts. He didn't do it to insult the poster. He didn't do it to prove a point about how shitty the moderation of the board is.

It's like deja vu...

Yes, it is.

You seem to bitch about the moderating every couple of weeks, claiming that the sky is falling and that no one knows what to expect.

Somehow, though, the community seems to be getting along pretty well, bigger and more active than ever.

Reading comprehension fail. I will say that your instinctive defensiveness and singling out of some posters does indeed show some doubt on your part. Some posters are asking about personal attacks and/or rude replies telling people to "shut the f**k up, and a moderator answered by saying that is pretty much the operating procedure. I point this out, and you feel compelled to respond to me for some reason. Feeling OK, Ed? Did I miss something so obvious that you had to respond to my post and whine about me?

My post didn't say "anything goes." I said personal attacks weren't allowed and I defined what I see personal attacks to be.

Also, I don't speak for Ed and barfo...they may see different things as personal attacks. As a super-robot-power team, I think we end up largely being consistent over time.

I didn't mean that literally "anything goes". I meant that instead of condemning the sort of response pointed out by Yardape, you instead defended it. It's your board, but if that is the way you want it to be, I'll be sure to post in a similar manner.

Defended it as being within the rules, yes. I'd prefer people didn't say rude things, but you know people. They tend to be an untidy, noisy lot.

It's your board

Equally yours as mine. I have no financial stake in the forum. I moderate to help out.

but if that is the way you want it to be, I'll be sure to post in a similar manner.

If you get frustrated and tell someone to shut up, I'll defend your right to do so. But I hope you'll do your best to be gracious. I hope that about everyone. I try not to edit, though, unless a rule is clearly broken.

You're way too reasonable. Please shut up! ;)

Of course I have doubt. I reconsider most things at all times. I have doubt about what I consider fair and I have doubt about moderating here and I have doubt about whether I'm going to make it to the gym today.

I find it hard to trust people who don't have doubt.

I felt compelled to respond to you "for some reason"?

Who ought I be responding to? What are you talking about?

I almost mentioned your overblown sense of persecution, but I held off. I should have seen it coming, of course. Haha.

I'm not claiming to be persecuted at all. I merely offered an observation to an answer to a question asked by another poster. The fact that you singled me out is perhaps tangentially related to some of your own expressed doubts that you shared with me, but a persecution complex is hardly the reason for me asking for further clarification from Minstrel, who ultimately did offer further clarification. Also, is mockingly congratulating other posters and offering them "cookies" a byproduct of your internal doubt as how one should present himself as a moderator?

Am I responding to just you (singling you out) or am I not?

You're not making much sense here.

I'm responding to people who address me, the collective moderating on this board, or the rules in general. I didn't decide to pull you into this conversation... I merely responded to you.

"Deja vu" was an obvious (and lame) shot at the rules and moderation of this board. You have a history of complaining and whining about things here and that is why I mentioned that. Whatever doubts I have in life or on this board they are irrelevant to that fact.

You have called the moderators cowards. You have claimed to have reported posters on at least two occasions to law enforcement. You claim that you are singled out and picked upon. It's pathetic, actually, in my opinion.

But you are who you are. I enjoy it when you discuss basketball and not when you belly-ache about things, but you don't post on the board for my enjoyment so keep doing your thing, man.

Ed O.

Do I now get a "cookie"? You have had posters advocating killing people based on their religion and you did nothing about it, so a community mod had to come in and clean up the mess that you left on the floor. Are you running a hate site, Ed? Mock me if you want, but I don't find any humor in you allowing posters to incite violence against any group of people, and then commenting in public against the posters who found those posts offensive.

I am glad that you shared your personal doubts with me, though. If such cut and dry instances of moderating intervention have you in knots, it's no wonder that you mock the posters who find such behavior unacceptable and hold the offenders in an embrace by your own silence. Any moderator who refused to take down those posts is a coward, and singling out the posters who were complaining isn't only cowardly, but it is also just plain odd.

Just shut the fuck up.

I know I am not required to read everything or anything, so it is my own stupidity, but felt the need to respond that it's topics like these that have me coming to this board less and less. Seems like there are quite a few topics that go from a discussion, to an argument, to 4 pages of whining and then bringing up past problems and issues, to where it is just an ongoing drama on the board. I am in no way blaming moderators for this, so don't take it as saying there needs to be more moderating, just a general complaint that I see, that has me wanting to come back less and less.

Funny, because this is the exact insult that a poster with many more posts than you complained about to the moderators. I'm a big fan of irony; thanks for the laugh.

Also, you said you don't blame the mods, yet a moderator is the one who brought up past issues in this thread.

I'm sure I'll be told to shut up, but can anyone clue me in as to why Oden is out for another week? How can the team possibly put a timeframe on his return at this point?

"Shut the fuck up, you are ignorant"

Maybe that can be explained as not being a personal attack . . . but to the the common poster, if directed at them, has got to feel like a personal attack.

Not saying mods are doing a bad job or we need more moderating (in fact I fall more on the side of less moderating) . . . but withstanding the very lengthy and logical explanation of why that isn't a personal attack . . . it's a personal attack.

While obscenities are allowed, directing them at a fellow poster I wouldn't think would be.

What if I posted, "mgb, I think you're fucking awesome!"?

Sorry, I'm in a wisecracking mood today.

What? They don't have to be obeyed? Now you tell me. I've been trying to go fuck myself for a week!
