Look it's pretty simple - he lost his **** when two hecklers started saying stuff and he hit them back the only way he could - he took the first option - color of their skin. Does that make him a racist? No, it makes him a comedian with an anger problem. A guy who doesn't handle bombing very well. If they were fat, he would have attacked their weight, women, he would have called them bitches...etc. Same way Mel Gibson is not anti-Semite, he's an alcoholic with a rage problem. REAL prejudice and racism happens when there is no RAGE or PROVOKING situation - then you can say someone is a racist or prejudice in the cold light of day.....for example if he was in a sit-down interview and said those words - THAT would be worth getting upset about
 
The N Word wasn't the worst of what came out of his tirade. We hear the N Word so much most people are numb to it.

True, that comment was disturbing.
I have to say I think Kramer was right on for telling those guys to shut up and calling them out. People that come to a show and talk are heckle are wack and ignorant and need to stay home or take out their insecurities elsewhere. Richards just REALLY chose the wrong topic to diss them on....IF he had made fun of them in almost ANY other way the audience would have laughed, they would have shut up like they should in the first place, and Kramer's career would not be in jeopardy...
seems to me like they pushed a button and it came out in a rage, then once he realized he had made it racial, he quickly tried to improvise it into a joke, but just started falling deeper into quicksand. Sad.

Maybe I missed the history class where it said that black people, and only black people were the ones persecuted against. Because I am quite certain white people have been slung up a tree by non-white people at certain points in time. Or that white people have been slaves to non whites.

In no way is what Richards done smart, funny, correct or right, but I do not think Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock etc calling a white person any sort of name correct either.
Yet it is perfectly fine for a black person to laugh at Chris Rock dissin a white person, yet when they are the target they don't like it.

You have to look at reality man, no matter how much you throw word "equality" out there, we're not equal....from pay to prisons to neighborhoods etc., we're not equal......there will be a great amount of white people who show up at a chris rock or dave chapelle show and laugh when they use the term "cracker".....no matter how one wants to spin it, the word cracker and ni##er are not the same.....mainly because whites and blacks aren't the same socially.....white people = the power group and blacks = the oppressed group.....ni##er is associated with A LOT of things, from the slave trade, selling of slaves, humiliation of slaves, killing of slaves, casteration of slaves, beating of slaves, etc.....we can move a little further along in history and the term ni##er can be associated with the Civil rights struggle also....so YES, the term cracker and ni##er aren't the same, although they're both reffering to a group of people.

Hm... kinda sorta related to what happened in my class the other day.

This girl said the N word, she was black. And she told me how she was mad about that one time my friend (paki) had said the N word.

I told her, if black people want to say the N word and disrespect themselves like that ... then it was okay for everyone to do it. I mean, think about it... if you want to disrespect yourself ... others will too.

But she said "No, only black people can say the N word." I had heard that one too many times and I let her know that was WRONG. If you dislike slavery being recalled so much, why the hell do you say it then?
She said .. when we say it .. it means "dawg" or "homie" or something like that. I was like .. when someone else says that .. it refers back to slavery and **** and you wanna take it offensive.

If you wanna say it, let others. If you hate the word, then dont friggin say it at all.

Teacher overheard us and stepped in the conversation... agreed with me. She said "Just saying that only black people can say the N word is racist itself."

I don't think there is equality, not at all I think white people still get the benefits and treatment the other races do not. However I don't think that is the point, I think that everyone wants equality in the world yet the ni##er word - which has it history and such - is only subjected to being able to be laughed at by black people and is deemed racist by a white man regardless of context and I really think that is the problem.
A word with such power to stir emotions shouldn't be used by anyone no matter the context. One day it will cause the **** to hit the fan and someone (white/black/any other race) will come out of it worse for wear whether it being physically or mentally.

exactly why it shouldn't be used ever.

I hate the term ni##er, I really do (I am a white man). Never in my whole life would I ever use it, even as a joke and I am quick to jump on people who do use it.

White people all over my school use the N-word the same way Black people use it (as "homie"). Regardless, many black people go nuts over that word, even when used in the previously mentioned fashion; which I think isn't a big deal at all. Although I'm sure everyone (in this thread) would agree that using the N-word in a derogatory fashion is unacceptable.
 
He tried apologizing on David Letterman, but apologies isn't gonna take it. His career is over. How can you say the N word like 500 times and accept people to accept your apology? The guy was crazy for doing that, and he wants to apologize now?
 
No one actually knows if he is a racist or not except for maybe his close friends and his family. He seemed really sorry that he said those things, but I believe that he must believe some of those things that he said on some level. You don't just go on that kind of a rant just out of anger at that heckler. He could have said a million other things but he chose to make it racial.

I also agree that there is a double standard. It's a big deal when white people call black people the n word but it wouldn't even be anything if a famous black celebrity said racist things about white people. That's just the way it is.

Its just another term for african american, afro american.

Even though cracker is the offensive term for white people, it was used to describe white farmers, and slaves call them "crackers" becuase the white slave owners cracked a whip. The whole context meaning of the words are completely different.

I just have to put it this way instead of going deep into the argument.

No one needs to say Ni//er
No one needs to say Cracker
No one needs to say terrorist or anything

If someone white calls you a ******, blacks shouldnt go all sensitive. leave the history behind. Its over. i am not saying its right to call someone a ni//er but people shouldn't be extra sensitive when someone says it. People dont go all crazy when they are called a terrorists or something.

Umair, you've said some dumb **** on this site in the past, but this one tops it all. You're saying that turning a blind eye to racism is a solution. That 's the way to promote it. It's people's acceptance of those terms that keeps them in circulation today. We need to learn from history, not "leave it behind". To even suggest that we should leave things like slavery and racism in the past is absurd. It's an issue that is still raging on and one that can't be dismissed by you or anybody else. Do you want people 50 years from now to forget the injustices that you face? In another thread you say how much you hate being called a terrorist. You seem to be especially sensitive to that topic but grossly ignorant about this one. Just as intolerance against muslims needs to be remembered and stopped, so does racism against black people. This WILL NOT be accomplished by "leaving history behind".
 
What Richardson said was just wrong on all accounts. But I am not surprised... jim crow, apartheid, and the civil rights movement were a mere 50 years ago. The generation of that time is still very much alive and well and their children are the new leaders of today. Does everyone think that America has just gone and done a 180 on its views on race? No. They just have gotten a lot more polite about it. Richardson's filter came off in his rage and his true feelings spewed out. Simple. I have no sympathy for him or his career.

As for the "n" word. Its all based on context isn't it? I do not encourage its use but once its meaning is taken in context then everything should be fine. That being said, a white person should probably just avoid using the word all together because coming out of their mouths, the context becomes warped because they are white. Is that in itself racism? Yes. But it is racism caused by the historically unique perspective blacks have of the word when used by different races.

If blacks are SO offended by the N word, then how about not saying the word at all? Too many black people say the N word like its nothing. If you're gonna say it, expect others too also.

Nope. Did you not read where I pointed out that blacks themselves have a unique (true only for blacks) historical perspective of the word that allows for them to use it in casual conversation but causes them to view its use by another race as hostile in context? Don't get what I am saying?

Here is an example:
In Jamaica the word "hush" can, and is often used to mean "dorry... don't worry... my condolences... everything will be ok". Most other places use the word to mean "be quiet or shush". If a Jamaican stepped on your toes they would turn around and politely tell you to "hush". You might be offended because your historical context of the word is different than theirs.

Look dude. What I am saying is that if blacks keep on thinking about slavery and all, and when a non-black person calls them a terrorist, they say this word has a long history. They are then offended. What I am saying is thatit is not right for a non black person to call a black person a n//ger and also blacks need to stop being all sensitive and stuff. I am not saying leave the history behind. What I am saying is that forget that slavery ever happened. If you dont think about it when someone calls you a n//ger, it doesnt make such a big deal. The N word was used like 200 years ago, slavery is over with now, everyone has freedom, so stop being extra sensitive. I know its wrong for a non black person to call a black person the N word, but blacks dont need to get too sensitive about it as well. Say if a black person calls me a terrorist, I wont get all pissed, atleast not as pissed as a black man would get when called the N word.

Like I said before:

No one needs to be called a n//ger, terrorist, cracker etc.
Its just wrong to be racist and be racist towards others because these words hurt everyone.

Ofcourse I am sensitive because it just happened about 5 years ago. Slavery ended like 200 years ago. Its historied now. People need to forget that about it now. And when I mean forget, I am not meaning forget like completely forget, but forget it like when someone calls a black person the N word. People were called the N words back then normally. They might have been as sensitive as I am to terrorist now. In 200 years do you think I will be pissed if someone calls me a terrorist? No! During slavery was going on, then someone would've been pissed, but its been over 2 centuries.

It should be important to never forget slavery happened, but it's equally important to not use it as a crutch.
 
As a huge Seinfeld fan, I thought I'd make my opinion heard in this thread. I've seen the apology, I've seen the video. First off, it seems like Michael Richards was clearly high or drunk because every good stand-up comedian knows how to react to these types of situations without it getting out of hand. Second, I do believe that Richards tried to turn the whole issue into a bad joke around half through the whole thing. Regardless, nobody should get race involved at all in this society.

Even in his apology interview (which CBS took off Youtube), he says that he's worried about "more anger and hate spewing" so I clearly think he himself was racist all this time and that *black* man heckling him was the last straw.

Regardless, that is worst place and way to to blow up I have ever seen.

That's true actually. I was wondering the other day what would happen if there was no such thing as youtube.

I also don't see how people watch Seinfield differently. He's an actor. Just because he's a no-name actor and his only claim to fame is Kramer, doesn't mean that's him. I watched an episode a couple days and still laughed. It's the same as watching Lethal Weapon movies and realizing that the character isn't actually Mel Gibson, but Mel Gibson acting.

Exactly. You just don't blow up and say all that sh!t he was saying. He said the "N" word several times and other racist comments. Tat type of stuff doesn't just spew out of the blue.
