The Nets decided to retain Krstic’s rights when he signed with Triumph Moscow this summer for a reason. They didn’t have to but decided to carry Krstic’s $2.7 million qualifying offer on their salary cap. If an NBA team wanted him, they didn’t want to lose him for nothing. They had invested a lot in him, just as they had with KMart.
They could ask for a number of things in return. For example, they could arrange a sign-and-trade for OKC’s second round pick. An OKC second round pick will be the 31st pick and with only a minimal amounts of smarts could be a better than a late first round pick, since teams don’t have to be commit to a two-year contract. And the Nets don’t have a second rounder this season. (There are some indications the Thunder might owe the pick to the Suns, however.)
And then later:
Beyond a pick (and/or a trade exception) there are some players on the Thunder who might be appealing to the Nets: Earl Watson; Chris Wilcox–still only 26 and who the Nets coveted for years; Joe Smith; Johan Petro. Smith, Wilcox and Petro have expiring contracts, Watson has two years left.

Anyone else think Joe Smith starting at the 4 might actually turn us from a borderline playoff team (7-8ish) to a safe one (4-5ish)? Presti's no fool, but we still might be able to pawn off Sean Williams on him with Krstic for Joe Smith.
