OT Kyrie Irving is certain that he is not an anti-semite; many others disagree

that was actually a decent apology. color me surprised

The same day he loses over 2 million he's suddenly able to say he's deeply sorry... yeah I bet he's suddenly sorry. And I'm sure his agent reminded him he's a free agent this summer.

And if you think Kyrie wrote that you're as batshit crazy as he is.

I thought the apology came after the Nets told him that he was suspended until he did so. He had three different opportunities to apologize on his own and an opportunity to just not pull this shit in the first place. This dude is a clown and I'm not falling for his bullshit. He's antisemitic plain and simple. I'm not saying he can't change and grow but the idea that he did actual change and grow between last night and this afternoon, after he was suspended indefinitely because of this, is fucking ridiculous.

I said this before in this thread but it bears repeating, Kyrie is a toxic individual and he damages the black community constantly with his qseudo intellectual, borderline crazy and ignorant takes, that some impressionable people both white and black will be influenced by. This is just another example and this time he made a public apology that I don't believe for a second, given the timing.

Fuck Kyrie and Kanye. At least Kanye is admittedly diagnosed with mental illness that it was very obvious he was being treated for until after his mother's death but it's no excuse for spreading hate in the different ways he has. I am starting to wonder about Kyrie's ability to delineate delusion from reality. It's just really sad to see prominent members of one generationally oppressed group go after another, especially when the Jewish community was so involved with helping the black civil rights movement in the 60's and 70's.

I know this is seemingly political but I don't see it that way, it's just like any other racism, a humanitarian problem. Kyrie is a basketball player and Kanye had an agency that had basketball players as clients, so it's a little OT but still relevant. Just some sickening stuff. More so than saying fuck either one of these two guys that I'm sure have problems... FUCK RACISM in any of its awful forms, perpetrated by any person or group.

Everything @blazerkor said is true and I have only one thing to add. It's not just morally wrong for members of one historically persecuted group to attack another, it's dangerous.

The Nazis that Kanye and Kyrie are allying with do not support Black people. They might use them but will also turn on them in a heartbeat. The reverse is also true. The minority of Jews who back Trump and DeSantis and others like them. They are already seeing the blatant Jew baiting from those people and their supporters. Same with those who make a career out of hating gays.

Nazis and their supporters are the deadly enemy of all who support equality and human rights. It is never OK to ally with them.

He's not sorry, nor does he even think he did anything remotely wrong.

Glad he doused some of this completely unnecessary fire with an apology. He's a very articulate guy but strikes me as someone who, insulated from reality by wealth/fame and surrounded by yes men/hangers on, thinks he's waaaaaay smarter then he actually is. Again and again he speaks speaks and acts based on some wacko kernel of thought that he's stumbled across & comes off like a bright High School student lecturing the world. Doubling down and stubbornly playing the victim when he's called out has had the masses shaking it's collective head for the decade he's been in the public eye. You would have thought last summer's look into other options (he had a player's option in his contract) would have been an eye opener as to how his act is playing with his audience.

Hopefully he is truly questioning his methods and beliefs. Unfortunately he's likely to be treated like a pariah by fans across the league and (given his history) more likely to double down yet again. He's become a role model to athletes & entertainers of how not to conduct yourself.

STOMP

the 'apology' came after consequences walked in and took a place at Kyrie's table. His suspension will cost him 2.3M, and he was facing more financial pain. It's nearly certain he didn't write that apology himself, and it's entirely possible the only thing he's sorry about are the consequences, not his bad-faith willful ignorance

apparently, for many "I'm sorry" is a magic phrase like abracadabra; A get-out-of-jail-free card. It shouldn't be that easy, and for most people it isn't.

I think we can accept that apology and move on.

But that doesn't mean he should be absolved of consequences. I'd be fine with him being suspended for much or all of the season. This is way worse to the public than a drug use 25 game suspension.

If he apologized immediately maybe the consequences should be less. The time it took for him to correct his mistakes should be a factor.

If he hadn't apologized he shouldn't have been allowed in the league. So him apologizing can let him potentially play next year.

But we also have to see what other actions and communication he does. It wouldn't surprise me if he has some notable comments in the days and weeks ahead.

my issue with this all is the leagues response. They came out quickly and fined and suspended Meyers right away and within a week he was out of the league. With Kyrie the league it seemed tried to do all they could to get him to apologize before they finally did something. I get it name recognition Kyrie is a better player, but this superstar rules and everyone else rules when it comes to this sort of thing is just wrong. He should have been suspended as quick as they did with Meyers. Plus the players who have come out so much against hate and all to stay quiet really hurts their voice.

Kyrie will be Kyrie, some people have all the answers and feel they can buck any type of system they don't agree with, let alone apologize.

While both seem a bit predictable, the League's failure surprises me more. There is a fraternity of players, and while there is clearly a history of Jews being targeted (see ALL OF RECORDED HISTORY), there is also a history and a continuation of racism against black Americans IN AMERICA, so while the lack of reaction is disappointing, it is not unexpected. It's a byproduct of solidarity, I suppose. Racism against African Americans here is much more immediate (for now and for many of the players in the NBA) than any discrimination against American Jews as a group.

That being said, it's terrible. Kanye's clearly imbalanced words dovetail with Kyrie's endorsement in both timing and content, and beyond the coincidence, there seems to be a deeper, more confusing source to all of this. Whatever it is, it isn't simple.

Ironically though, all this just seems to reinforce that all groups of human are exactly the same regardless of their group.

Can't we all just get along? Obviously not.

the apology wasn't forced. They weren't pulling his fingernails out or waterboarding him or holding a gun to his mother's head

he made a choice to engage in willful bigotry. He made a choice to double down on that bigotry. He only chose to issue an apology after he had to actually suffer a consequence for his first couple of choices. We don't have a shred of evidence he is sorry for his bigotry. All we have is evidence he's sorry to be losing money. Fuck that guy

Thanks, never to old too learned something new!
Amare’ Stoudamire traced his roots back to Israel of I’m not mistaken. He has fully committed to Judaism. And last I had checked he was an assistant WITH the Nets. HBO’s REAL SPORTS did an amazing piece on it. When he came through with them last season, I approached him and told him how impressed I was with his story, he sat down next to me in the media room during dinner and we talked about it for about 5 min. What a great dude who found himself.

Unfortunately looks like he stepped down from his coaching position last spring because it conflicted with his praying schedule.

About 4 years ago I was on a business trip in Haifa, and the local team (Macabi Haifa?) was playing his team (Hapoel Jerusalem?) - so my guys there took me to the local basketball arena (about the size of the high-school arena my kids went to, although, to be fair, it's a big high-school) and I got to see him playing. That was quite amusing. As you can imagine, he was a shell of his former self at this point, was playing Center and was really not moving too well, but still cool to see it.

Kyrie is a certified nut. I remember back when he and Dame were younger, there was so much debate about who was better. I think the argument is over. Not only do I think Dame was/is a better player, but hands down a better person and a better leader. It's not even close. It's a shame because Kyrie has always been a gifted player, but he's just a shitty human being.

we don't always need to be cynical

No we just always need to be smart. Kyrie refused to make the apology the night before he made it and had been suspended indefinitely because of what he apologized for hours before he made it. It's not cynical to say that this was obviously disingenuous and coerced, it's almost a reality that has to be accepted. You know who else was also smart, Nate Jones' business partner because the Jewish community has no interest in keeping this thing going. So the smart move on there part is to recognize the disingenuous tweet as genuine so Kyrie followers can't justify their antisemitism by pointing to him.

So you don't have to be cynical to look at the timeline and realize that Kyrie only made his statement because he got suspended. You can also publicly use his statement to denounce antisemitism because the statement does that for the most part.

this is really overthinking it.

no shit kyrie was forced to make this statement. ultimately, it really doesn't matter if it's genuine or not as long as his followers see the apology and the harm he caused. it kinda/sorta undoes the damage he did in the first place.
