With the Cleveland Cavaliers on the brink of elimination from the 2017 NBA Finals, Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer reported Thursday that LeBron James may consider signing with the Los Angeles Lakers or Los Angeles Clippers during 2018 free agency.

James and the Cavs fell 118-113 to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday and are down 3-0 in the NBA Finals.

In support of rumblings regarding James potentially heading west, O'Connor referenced an article by The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski last year in which he revealed league-wide belief that LeBron may not stay in Cleveland forever.

O'Connor also mentioned Jalen Rose saying on ESPN's First Take this week that he thinks James will eventually play in California since he lives close to L.A.'s Staples Center:

The four-time NBA MVP left Cleveland once before to play for the Miami Heat, but he returned in 2014 with the stated goal of bringing a championship to his home region.

James accomplished that by leading the Cavaliers to a come-from-behind NBA Finals triumph over the Warriors last year, but a repeat is looking increasingly unlikely.

While no team is close to touching the Cavs in the Eastern Conference, bringing championship glory back to the Los Angeles area could conceivably be an attractive challenge for James.

Following the 2017-18 season, LeBron has a $35.6 million player option to remain with Cleveland in 2018-19, per Spotrac.

Yea this isn't going to happen anytime soon if it does. This NBA playoffs has been so lackluster that we are now making stories up just to have something to talk about. KD has a better chance of leaving GS then Lebron does of Cleveland right now.

The current state of the NBA is troubling. If this happens, then it's just kind of sad.
Shaq sure did this....Orlando, Lakers, Suns, Celtics, Heat....it's not like it's a new thing although it sucks for fans

Shaq was a great center but he wasn't LeBron. Maybe when he was a dominating physical force for his first ten years. But LeBron sets the trends for how other players around thd league see themselves.... he's the Alpha. It honestly really doesn't matter because if small market teams suffer from this trend, nobody is going to give a shit any way. You just let it play out. Thank God we have a franchise player that is above all this.

I was considering following the Ringer's Twitter account, thank you for making me think twice about that.

He wouldn't really be more likely to win with Lakers, would he? Unless they can offload Mozgov and Deng, which is going to be tough, they will not have cap space to sign him AND one of George or Cousins. Ball, Russell and Ingram will still not quite be there in 2018 either.

Clippers is completely bonkers. They'd have to clear Jordan and Griffin to have a chance, have zero picks to get something sensible in the next years.

He won't leave Cleveland again.

let me get this straight, the 2016/2017 season is not over yet and there we have a 2018 free agency rumor ?

man those writers are really running out of shitty ideas to get people to click on their links.

No doubt! This is nothing but one guys opinion, no substance behind it.

I'm sure he is looking at Dame, CJ and Nurk thinking WOW if I joined with them we could be unstoppable!

We can dream cant we?
And he'd be close to Nike, the company that boosts his bank account more than anything else.
I'll bet Paul would be more than happy to pay that luxury tax for Lebron.
:cool2:

When a player reaches unrestricted free agency, it's the first time they can choose their team.

People need to stop complaining about this..

He's gonna have to go through the Warriors..why not do it in the WCF? I don't think there's a more attractive situation for him than Portland when it comes to winning. Maybe Boston or Washington..not that it would ever happen

It would surprise me if James left Cleveland. He's already gone on record with the whole "I made a mistake leaving" sob story, and how he wants to stay with Cleveland.

However, if management isn't listening to him about how to improve their team, then he may not have much of a choice. That Cleveland team as it stands isn't going to win a championship as long as GS stays dominant. So the question becomes: who does Cleveland bring in during the off-season to improve their team? Who's that puzzle piece?

And would management go for it?

Wade to Cleveland?

I could see Lebron and Chris Paul going to Chicago to join Wade Rolo and Butler...I don't see Lebron going to a western conf franchise.

I thought wade was done in Chicago

Read today that he met with the front office and talked over his role in Chicago...said he'll more than likely re-sign and that the meeting went well. I'd assume he would bring in his buddies to compete for a title...Lebron would love to win a championship with the Bulls...all the Jordan comparisons...he'd have won championships with 3 teams if that happened.

I can't see Lebron leaving Cleveland under any circumstance. He's the best player in the world, players will join him, he knows now that he doesn't need to leave.
