I admit, I'm not too focused on politics (or work) until 4 PM or so today. After 161 games, the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers are in a first place tie with one game to go. A's win, they win the division (they are in the playoffs regardless, for the first time in 6 years).
How improbable is this?
On June 30, the Rangers had a 13 game lead on the A's.
Oakland's total payroll is $49 million. The Rangers' is $120 million. The Angels, who were eliminated from the playoffs by the A's win Monday, spent over $300 million on TWO players.
The A's have lost three starting pitchers. Their entire 5 man starting rotation are rookies.
The A's third baseman is actually a catcher. Their first baseman is an outfielder. Their second baseman is a shortstop. Their leading leftie reliever is a first baseman.
The team consists of rookies, other teams' castoffs, and a Cuban.
The owner desperately wants to move the team, dealt all their "best" players before the season started for has beens and never wases, and treats fans like crap.
I think there's even a cute librarian somewhere.
