Now that we know the Sacramento kings will relocate to Seattle does that mean the Lakers hatred might die off a bit?

L*ker hatred is a moral imperative, and is not subject to conditional modifiers.

Lakers rivalry wasn't as big when the Sonics where here in Oregon. I'm just asking if the new Seattle team may take some of that away.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Do we have to hate the Clippers now that they are relevant?

Sure it was. If you haven't hated the L*kers your whole life, you're not a true Blazers fan.

I can say with adamant fervor, I only cared about the Blazers (and sports in general) starting at age 24.

The laker hatred was greatest in the late 90's early 00, when both teams were relevant. Nothing will quell that spirit.

However, I never got the feeling the rivalry was as strong on their end. But there has been great two-way rivalries between the blazers and sonics, and especially blazers and Jazz. But until the Blazers are decent again, it's just one-way-hate. Like the wolves fans thinking there is some rivalry. They just don't matter enough for there to be a real rivalry. For a rivalry to exist, two teams both need to at least be playoff teams

The rivalry for me was much earlier than that. I started hating the lakers in the late 80's; when they would defeat the Drexler Blazers in the playoffs. What put the icing on the cake was when the Lakers defeated the Blazers in 91; when the Blazers had HCA throughout the playoffs.

Apparently you don't remember 1991.

Actually I do remember but I was not a huge fan at that time. I was a fan when I was younger, but in 91 I was going through my fuck-everything stage of teen life and turned away from Blazers, Family, and all things good and holy. But I came back to the loving embrace of the pinwheel a few years later.

Does this guy who started this thread even live here? Is he from here? DOes he understand our team's history?

No true Blazer fan would even pose this question.

exactly!

And no real, knowledgeable Blazer fan would say that the Sonics were more hated.

I don't think Portland fans celebrated the Sonics leaving Seattle, or them losing in the finals. However, if you ask Blazer fans, TRUE Blazer fans, which they would rather see

The Lakers losing in the finals or the Sonics losing, they'd say Lakers.

The Lakers leaving LA or the Sonics leaving Seattle, they'd say Lakers leaving LA.

The Lakers. Always hate the Lakers more.

I'm actually excited for Sonic fans and the city of Seattle for the potential return of the Sonics. I could never, would never, WILL never be excited for the Lakers, the Lakers fans, or the franchise as a whole, whenever ANYTHING happens to them.

this question....seriously....

If you look at it from the Lakers' perspective, the Blazers are kind of just another team to them at this point. 6 or 7 other teams in the west can claim the same 'rivalry' with LAL, and it happens when those teams are competing with the Lakers at a high level.

LA fans don't view a Portland 'rivalry' the same way our fanbase views it.

I think you are just looking at the Lakers usually coming out on top against the Blazers; but if you ask any fan in Los Angeles and they dislike the Blazers almost as much as we dislike them. In fact, only Boston and Spurs are more on their hate list.

depends on what Laker fans you are talking to. Laker fans who actually know who Jerry West was, or can tell you who Norm Nixon was traded for, consider other teams "rivalries" more than others.

Boston, obviously.

But in the Western Conference, they'd probably consider Portland, Utah, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio somewhat on par with each other.

The front running Laker fans don't even know who Norm Nixon was, or that Jerry West played in the NBA. Plus, they're too busy being "life long" Clipper fans now to care.

It makes me truly giddy to watch the Lakers struggle this season. After a Blazers win, the next most satisfying thing for me is a Lakers loss, especially when Kobe and Howard are both playing. Watching them interact during a loss is so damn fun.

I actually know a lot of LA fans and Portland is in their top 4-5 most hated teams on a regular basis. When a player of Kobe's stature continually talks about, and feels haunted by, his struggles against Portland (especially in Portland), that says something.

did anyone else smile a bit reading that last sentence?

God I love beating the Lakers in Portland.

I smiled when I wrote it. The way Kobe has brought it up several times, you know it's something that bothers a true competitor of his nature.

The Lakers are at the top of the Blazer fans' list of hated rivals, though. That was kind of my point. Not that it isn't a rivalry, but that it means more to Portland fans simply because of the amount of hatred we have toward them.

If you were actually a Blazers fan and not some rube with a VPN connection, you'd know that 1991 and 2000 mean we can never let our hatred die. Older fans know the 1980's and 1970's dates too.

Oh yeah - agreed it means more to us than it does to them. But there is a rivalry there. It's just more highly-fueled when we're competetive playoff teams (i.e. the better we are in relation to them fuels it).

You might have some what of a point although I'm excited to build a rivalry with the Seattle fans again. God is right when he said that the Blazers\Lakers rivalry was more of a one way hate and inside the Lakers fan base the Blazers are just another team. I think the Lakers hatred comes more from the Hollywood stars, big lights and big city atmosphere that they have.

So, no update about us and the Clippers?

um....not even close to the reason there. If that was true, why don't people hate the Clippers?

Their phony fans, yes...they suck shit. But thats not the reason why there is such hatred. It certainly helps, but not the reason.
