So I'm taking a class called "The Geography of Portland" which is kind of a joke being from Portland..... but I'll take the free credits.

With that said, I'm reading a book for the class on our history and I can't believe that we didn't maintain what was built for the Lewis and Clark Exposition.

It says in the book that the city only leased the land, which is now known to be NW Portland where the Montgomery Ward building is. Other cities, such as Chicago, owned the land where they had their "World's Fair" so they were able to keep the structures.

Such a shame. Plus the "world's largest log cabin" burned down.

Can you imagine if that lake and fair was allowed to remain?

Owning the land wouldn't have made much of a difference. Most of the buildings were really cheaply built and some were falling down before the fair ended.

The world's largest log cabin was the Forestry Center and didn't burn down until the 1960"s.

Is Montgomery Park still just a bunch of office warehouses, or is it being developed?

I think if the city had owned the land, they might have actually built some nicer structures ala Chicago or New York.

The only building I can recall remaining from Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition is the Museum of Science and Industry.
