opez said he believes he has a responsibility to help Leonard develop as part of a “big-man code” he learned as a rookie. Lopez said the code entails big men pushing each other to get better while at the same time having “each other’s backs.”
Like Leonard, Lopez entered the NBA as a 20-year-old after two years of college. During his rookie year with Phoenix in 2008-09, he got to play with one of the NBA’s all-time great centers, Shaquille O’Neal.
“Shaq’s the one that taught me about the big-man connection, the big-man code,” Lopez said.
What did Lopez learn from O’Neal?
“I wouldn’t say skill so much as mentality,” Lopez said. “The thing about the league is, people have the skills and they develop them, but players are lacking in mentality, and I think it’s something that you evolve into. You make mistakes, and you have to get past them. The only way to do it is experience.”
