I know there are threads upon threads like this, but I got to thinking……..

What happens if we end up with the 7th or 8th pick? Is that plus Ant worth any needle mover types?

I’ve seen discussions around 1. I’ve seen ideas around 2-5, but what if it’s 7-8?

We traded Bowie and #12 pick for Buck Williams and was a huge difference maker.

You make the best deal you can or you draft the best player available. Then you do your best from there.

We're going to have to trade Ant and something for an at-or-near all star wing. Or a player who will be that good for us.

I think it would mean we have to add more future firsts to get needle mover/s

“And in unprecedented fashion, the Portland Trailblazers will select 31st in the first round. We just realized we forgot to include them, and accidentally drew the Hornets twice”

Yeah there's a 56.6% chance that we get moved back and only a 42.1% chance of us moving up. Not the worst of odds but still more likely that we move back than move up or at 2.2% stay at 5.

I sure hate tanking. C'mon 10%....

If the pick is 7-8 makes it even more clear this team can't contend with Dame. Hopefully they would take a longer term approach and rebuild around Shae/Ant/etc

Obviously getting #1 is a game changer of course I'm rooting for that.

But not sure if we get #2-4 would the team make bad decisions to try and win now? In that case I'd prefer #8 if it means we'll instead keep the pick and do a proper good quality rebuild.

Not sure I remember a draft with such a high value difference from #1 to #2.

Plenty of all time greats have gone #7 and much lower and it's very likely that many quality players will be available there this year. I continue to think thats it's far more likely they are able to attain contender status primarily through the draft then by trade &/or Free Agency, though it would take hitting on a couple more picks. Unless it's a truly great player (like most expect VW to be), they are more then a player a way from being legitimate contenders. Even if they luck out and get #1, it will likely take another season of young talent maturing to truly ascend to contender status.

When a sure thing superstar becomes available, it's usually a pretty steep drop off. 1997 for example you had Keith Van Horn going #2 after Duncan... Chauncey Billups went #3. Lots of meh followed but at #9 Tracy McGrady was selected...

Don't trade that pick. There will still be a very good player available. Remember, when we won the lottery and got Oden, if we HADN'T won it, we could've taken Joakim Noah and been much better off!

Good post, yes I agree. While yes the Blazers might be able to get an allstar at #7 similar to pick #2 - if the Blazers trade the pick its likely worth much more at #2. So if they "cash out" the value of the pick they lose that opportunity to hit on a great selection at #7.

This is why I want the Blazers to keep the pick, unless its some rare situation such as Jaylen Brown forcing his way to Portland and we get him at a very fair value.

Not trading a 7-8 pick is like asking Dame to ask for a trade.

Then we tell Damian;

Sorry Damian, we (The Blazers) tried to build a contender but there's just no realistic possibility to do it at this time. We wish you nothing but the absolute very best, its just unfortunate the Blazers previously made bad decisions and now are in the position of being many seasons away from contending. We wish we could've supported your greatness with the chance of having a real contender. You will go down as one of the best if not absolute best Blazer of all time. Please confidentially let us know some of your preferred teams, and we will try to work on a trade that is beneficial to both yourself and the Blazers. Or if you change your mind and prefer to stay here while we develop young players, please let us know as we would happily consider how to move forward with that alternative instead.

If I were a team with a “needle mover” I’d probably not trade that player for a pick after 3 in this draft. If someone knows this draft to be different, please let me know

Ooooh Noah. C'mon man. Really. But his frisbee freethrow action was amusing. NOT! I did see an article on last years Draft, as far as if a re-draft was done today. Sharpe came in at 5, and Jabari came in at 30. So the addition of Schmitz is paying off. But i trade that sucker and Ant for a real nice addition.

The Blazers need to look at under utilized talent, that might flourish in a new place. Markkanen was that guy last year. John Collins might be that guy this year.

This is what I was alluding to in another thread where I mentioned we might have to overpay for a good player, (Unrealistically to get a great player)
When I say overpay I meant multiple 1 st round picks (and matching salary) for someone like OG. We need to find a team who has multiple forwards that had a disappointing season and wants to change things up. Toronto seems to be a good trade partner. Maybe Atlanta like others have mentioned. But I think we need OG more than Collins.

Yeah I don't think Collins being better on offense than defense makes sense at forward for a Dame team. Maybe if we had a defender like Hart at SG; instead of Ant. Or if we had Gobert defense at Center instead of Nurk. Or if we had a better defender than Grant. As this roster is, Collins would make our offense great but it'd be the same story at defense as the Melo/Kanter teams.

The problem with the matching salary too is we don't have dead salary to pair with picks. Having to give up Ant/Nurk subtracts a player or two from our 8 man rotation, so it would only be a marginal upgrade, instead of a complete starter addition.

OG injuries concern me, and he's just not at the allstar level the Blazers need to contend. Seems more like an ideal 4th/5th starter or 6th man.

Great point on the first round picks; maybe if OG was the final piece to contend we sort of overpay as the Bucks did for Jrue and then can contend. But when OG doesn't make us a contender, it seems very shortsighted to overpay and give up more 1st round picks than a player is worth.
