Have a 13" unibody MacBook from 2008. Have had no problems with it until about 6 months ago. When I plug my charger in it sometimes charges sometimes doesn't. You have to mess with it sometimes to get it to work. Great laptop, in pretty good shape, just tired of having to deal with it. I assume it can be fixed, but am ready to move on. Going to buy a Macbook Air. Didn't know if any of you are squared away when it comes to fixing these things and would like to buy it from me. It has the latest update Lion and a ton of software. If it means anything, Brandon Roy watched a movie on it once :)....... Let me know if anybody wants to buy it or has ideas of what The HCP would do.

Google OWC and order a new battery and charger. Or just the charger. If that doesn't work, go for the battery.

They have vids on the site how to replace the battery. It's pretty easy.

If you have an extended warranty I would take it to an apple store. My girlfriend had a similar problem with her macbook pro. The cause of the problem was a bad logic board and apple replaced the logic board. Also, have you tried using a different charger?

It's a 2008 model. Not likely under warranty.

On my 3rd charger now. I'm past the warranty already. I see places will buy Macs that have problems, just thought somebody on here might want it if they know how or somebody that knows how to fix it.

Donate it to gambitnut (he works at FreeGeek) and then write it off as a charitable donation.

But get all that porn off it first.

ESPECIALLY the videos of your wife & I. Even if we were wearing masks half the time.

Have you replaced the battery too? That might be the issue. If you haven't, check your battery cycle count. Go to About this Mac (click the apple icon in the upper left) and then select More info to get to the system profiler. Select Power and look for Cycle Count (its under Health info). The amount of cycles varies from model to model, so you'll need to google your specific one (early/late 2008) to see what the normal life of a battery is.

I'm in a similar situation. We have a MacBook Pro from early 08 that needs replacing. Hopefully it lasts long enough for the next update, which is supposed to be a pretty significant one.

Thanks PorkMan. Just checked under cycles and it says 1,324. At work in the TV trucks, I have it on all day every day. So it is always plugged in.

Just looked at the port where I plug into and notices the 2 outside prong things are black. Same as my charger...... That can't be good.

Holy shit.

According to this I think yours is supposed to have a life to 500 cycles. I think 'life' means 70% capacity of a new battery, but I could be wrong. Regardless, it looks like your battery should/could be shot. If the rest of your computer runs fine, you might want to just replace the battery. They seem expensive, but 100 bucks or so is a lot cheaper than 1k for an Air.

The system profiler gives more info, but I'm not computer savvy enough to say what means what. I would think that your Condition (right under the cycles) would be pretty bad. Ours is Fair at <700 cycles on our mac book and poor at the same amount on our Pro. The good news is, according to that link, the newer laptops have a cycle capacity of 1000, so about double what the 08 models.

DAMN! Ya, the computer itself runs great. I'll see what the guys at the MAC Store say. Thanks brother.

LMAO! A 2008 CPU is ancent. Althought I always buy top of the line CPU's. They tend to last another 2-3 years over the lessor versions. My tower at work is 5 years old and still is faster than most I've seen. Alas, I did pay around 6k for it.

This laptop is bomb! Never had issues til now. Mags..... hook me up with a new one son!

Done! I thought it would be something challenging!

Just a heads up, if you ever sell your computer, you need to be confident the data is wiped. I know friends that would pick up "clean" computers and find tons of old files using a couple of programs. IE buy a new battery and don't toss out this one too quickly.

good call. We have a toshiba laptop, sony desktop and an old ibook all sitting around because we haven't wiped them yet. hopefully they all can still boot up so I can wipe the data before donating.

Just take the hard drives out.

Brought it to the Mac Store by Lloyd Center today on the way to the RG. They new exactly what was wrong. Said that is caused by condensation where the charger plugs in. Said they see this every now and then. Going to cost me $150. I'm getting it fixed then using it as our home computer in our office. Move that Macmini to the kids room to use and then get myself a new MacBook Air. Thanks for nothin as usual bitches!
