Our OT section is the only place I go to read and contribute about politics on the entire internet (sans Twitter). I follow a lot of "like-minded" people on twitter. I think it's important to see things from the other side and boy do I get plenty of that here, which is my goal. I will admit that some of the Trump supporters here have actually helped tame some of my genuine fear I have of that man. Unknowingly just by reading SOME of their takes. But then I hop on twitter and all I need to see is one fucking tweet from him and my fears rise to the surface again. Perhaps this is where I come to chill the hell out on the whole thing? It's weird. I don't know what I'm doing. I just know, HCP, that you're a good dude and I'd suggest trying your best not to carry over your feelings of people from one side of the board (OT) to the other. Between the heated, caps lock insults there is some really compelling, thought provoking shit here.

Two things I never touch. Facebook, coworkers, whoever.

Do you mean you never touch your coworkers? Im sure they're happy to know that.

You really brought this into another thread? HAH.

It was an angered response to someone getting too personal. Yeah, I shouldn't respond like that, but I'm gonna respond heatedly if someone calls me an asshole, asks if I'm fucking blind, etc.

We all do it. Is it cool? No. But it happens. I don't see how that plays a part in the bigger picture, in terms of tolerated groups of people. Tolerating someone in a personal argument is different than being tolerant of groups of people.

I still don't know why you brought that into this thread.
Now you've got it in two threads. Hypocrisy, as I said.

I have felt the exact same way. There are some people on the left here who have ripped me a new asshole all because I said something was gay but the left never understands context, they just freak out over everything and even with me believing in gay rights people were calling for me to banned because I said something was gay. A specific referee in fact who wasn't gay but made terrible calls. Oh my bad I called him a SlyPokerDog. these are all words people give power too. Magical words. Then people proceeded to call me a bigot all because I used a magical word when in reality they were being the bigots at that moment. CONTEXT. Learn in people. I know Portland is full of over sensitive snowflakes but come on, not everybody that disagrees with you is a "bigot, racist, homophobic,".

Come on. I get ripped all the time by conservatives on here, which I think is the majority of those talking political stuff in the OT, and I dont whine about it. I bite fucking back, even if I dont make sense. Because arguing is fun

I think it helps if you assign cartoon voices to posters when you read their threads.....Foghorn Leghorn, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, etc....but Sly will always be Bugs Bunny to me in a Brunehilde Valkyrie costume

If you use the word faggot knowing how it makes gay people feel and don't care you're probably an asshole.

I would only ever use the word fag if I were in England and was asking for a cigarette

When Bill was voted in as President, I knew who Gerald Ford was (the same amount time difference, 16 years).

but I was loser who ate glue and picked his nose.

Hopefully you knew who Grover Cleveland was too. But the point is there is a difference between those who have been president in your living memory, and those who were president before you were born. Good luck kicking the glue habit, by the way. You've admitted you have a problem, that's the first step.

HCP, mostly the debates are good, heated, and predictable - mine included! :blahblah: That said, it definitely gets very close to the line sometimes, and actually that's why I took a 6 month break this past year. It got too close for comfort!

I think Riverman has it right when he says there aren't a lot of opportunities in "real life" to have these debates. When it's not personal, it's interesting.

Then you're the whitest Tommy Chong impersonator

I am pretty big on compartmentalization, so this makes no sense to me. For instance, I have 0 respect for Jason Kidd as a person. But I would listen with rapt attention if he were talking basketball. I have no problem separating the two.

Furthermore, I think this also illustrates one of the biggest problems with political religious discussions in general: too many people conflate, "I disagree with specific beliefs held by this person," with, "This is a bad person on the whole." This thought process is unhealthy, and is the kind of thinking that leads to prejudice and bigotry.

There are plenty of people in the OT section with whom I disagree vehemently, both in the content of their conversation and their manner of delivery. But when we're talking Blazers, none of the OT stuff matters to me, because it's not relevant to the basketball discussion.

Well said.

Also, I've literally read almost every thread in the last 5 months. Aside from the occasional (moron, asshole, fuck off, etc.) comments, I really don't see each side being THAT belligerent to each other as you describe to which you would have to ignore people because of it. I don't get offended easily, if ever, so perhaps I am missing something, I ignore no poster. But PtldPlatypus has it right with what he said.

Interesting take I guess on the OT boards... Kind of a bummer too, honestly.

everyone thinks i'm a democrat in real life lol

Me too. Its funny. You can want to give on a personal level without wanting to give on a large scale, enabling a percentage of the public and allowing them to sit on their ass and collect checks.
Just sayin.

Liberal Republican here... lol

And the rest of you can SUCK IT!
(Is that how its done in the OT?)

I do not have anyone on ignore.
I believe ignoring someone says more about the tunnel vision of the person doing the ignoring than the person being ignored.

Also, sometimes people have a bad day, and bring their frustrations to the OT forum.

Without naming anyone, we have a poster that has always made quality posts. But one recent day he went sideways and made several over the top personal comments about other posters. I wrote several responses, but did not post any of them.

After looking at his posts for the day, it was clear he was upset about something. I have no idea why he was off center, but saw no reason to push him further in the wrong direction. Sometimes walking away from a thread is the best option.
