"Major Sporting Event Coming to Portland" Announcement 11am today (It's Indy Car)

It would be fun to give rides on a practice day. We usually drive about 80 percent or so, but still quite a ride. Just a fun experience to those who haven't left the bleachers.

The half-brother of my adopted father(at the time) is Johnny Rutherford, winner of three Indy 500s and starrer of commercials and one Home Improvement episode. He was much older than my adopted father(at the time) and didn't really associate much with his family. I did meet him once at his mother's funeral and we got Christmas cards.

Anyone else end up going?

Kids 10 and under got in free. Was not the best view since I saw maybe two passes all race but the price was right.

Unfortunately no, I forgot all about it.

So how were the facilities? Not much has happened there since when, 2006 or 2007?

Nice to have Indy racing back!

I watched on TV (Forgot about it as well, otherwise might have considered flying up for the day). It was a nice enough race - I have pretty much stopped watching Indy when the Champ cars left Portland way back in the day. The cars have not aged gracefully, Both F1 and Formula E cars look much better and more modern now - but it was still an enjoyable race to watch.

I miss running PIR. Such a lovely track.

Great day at the track as usual. I saw Coach Stotts hangin with one of the Indy teams. I yelled, "Hey Terry... Go Blazers." I was shocked when he didn't acknowledge me in any way. Not even a glance. Does he not know who Rotary111 is? :emotions:

Remember the Andretti father's day race?

I went to whatever race they had in 2005 and that lower level NASCAR event a few years later. Do not think much has changed. Sat on the Northside general admission side for the first part of the race and it was basically a parade. Walked over to the other GA by the start finish line for most of the last half. Was nicer being able to hear the announcers and see the video screen. Still, not much passing in those areas.

He does now...

Classic!

My dad has been a chief steward and pace car driver for most of my life. I pretty much lived there growing up.

This (and the Blazer arena) is our happy place.

Wow, I'm impressed!

Ha, that wasn't supposed to come out like that.

I'm reflecting back a little more today. He has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of days.

Too much of this going on around here lately.

No, seriously, I'm impressed.

Sorry to hear about your dad and his health. He out? Doing better?

That's awesome. My dad was involved in racing much of his early life and then again after my mom passed away. I use to spend many days and nights out at the Portland Speedway as well as Jantzen Beach when they had the Quarter mile track there. Also, when the Indy Cars (Cart at the time) and PPG was the major sponsor and we were a large distributor for PPG chemicals and would always get race packages that included pit passes as well as hospitality passes that allowed us to go into the lunch tent and eat with the drivers and crews. Great experience.

Man, what horrible marketing for this event. Seriously I had no clue it even took place over the weekend until I read this thread today.

They did not have a sponsor, so that may have been the reason for little advertising.
