I read that poll, and that's not only bad news for Establishment Republicans, but for the entire Democratic Party.

I'm not sure if whiteness is the issue, or if President Obama and the Democrats have been too aggressive in their promise to "fundamentally transform" America. It has benefitted much of the hard-core Democratic Base, but at the expense of the Blue Dogs and the Independents To win elections, you need both (Independents and the centrist portion of your own party).

If there was only a 50/50 whites and asians country it would be paradise.

I mean.... we have our own culture, no? And it seems to me like most people, around here anyway, are pretty open to new things and broadening our horizons, but it still sucks to see things change. I miss the way Portland used to be. I don't like the traffic. I don't like the huge influx of hipsters. I can understand why some people would feel like their culture was being faded a little bit, and why that would be upsetting.

Respectfully, using Portland, Oregon as a microcosm of America perhaps isn't the best idea.

Nothing in your link or post supports using the word white. Race is no factor at all according to your link.

Sounds like you're blaming the wrong people. And yes I'll say it white people tend to appropriate culture instead of create their own.

Who gives a fuck? I googled this topic just now and there is so much garbage that pops up it is sad. One link was someone's serious article that included a reference to a black guy scoring a winning hockey goal. I think the point was that whites were mad about it. I honestly don't know.

It's kind of sad that the country has turned into a larger version of high school. You have your stoners versus jocks versus rednecks and so on.

People just want to fit in, so much that they don't think for themselves. If a sub 90 IQ white kid wants to have his pants hanging off his butt cheeks, I think it is because he is mentally defective, it isn't an evil plot to steal culture.

Hey D? I love the vast majority of what you bring to this forum, and I, as an old white guy cannot even begin to comprehend the black experience. But the above statement makes you as racist as any white racist I've ever run into. By making those blanket and inane statements, you negate every argument you bring to the race talk table. C'mon man, you're better than that. If any of us white guys had made a statement like that, you would have ripped us a new one and then some. And besides, what race, other than the white race is stupid enough to take any credit whatsoever for the current hipster culture? If the black race wants to to own that, then have at it and shame on the blacks....and are you telling me that any other race would claim credit for the Western or Cowboy culture (though blacks were a part of that also)? But if you want other races and cultures to meet you at least half way, stop insulting us and trying to kick us in the nuts every chance you get. You might be surprised at how many of us really do just want everybody to get along.....and are ashamed of the white idiots who make the human race in general look bad.

And while you can infer that the article is a white/black thing, I think it's broader than that. A lot of people aren't comfortable with what they see as this country leaning liberal. I personally don't feel comfortable with the right wing, ultra conservative slide I see this country taking and it leaves me feeling alienated. Another person might have a different take on their own current comfort zone and the reasons for it. There are over 300 million people in this country....that's a lot of opinions....and assholes.....

You don't want to be painted a certain way. Please do us the same courtesy. I wish you and everyone else in this world peace and contentment, so long as it doesn't come at the expense of anyone else. I'll work with anyone if they'll work with me.

Not only is that a ridiculously racist statement, it's bonehead wrong.

White is not a culture. There are well over 100 different cultures which have developed in Caucasian populations around the world. Most of them are represented to some extent in America. No other place on Earth can make this claim.

Logically this makes sense. However, because of those things we have and could never experience I don't care if he says things that seem fucked up.

Example. ..... Late model Hondas have some kind of sticky goo adhesive holding the inner door moisture barrier to the door shell. You will never see it unless you take the door apart. Well, it sticks to everthing and makes a huge mess.

I say the most racist things against the engineers that put this shit there when I work on them. I wish them all death and that includes their families.

Am I serious? No, but I'm just talking about something that irritates me.

I think being discriminated against every day of your life might be a better reason to have such feelings.

But let me assure you, we are not slipping to the conservative. When I moved from Oregon in the mid 70s, we had a Republican Governor, a great guy in Tom McCall and
a Republican legislature. Life was good! Since I moved back, down hill. It's all in memory now, the image is vanishing as time marches on. The slide you refer to, from my view, is tilting way to the left. But it is about to drop off the cliff, when they pass a carbon tax, cap and trade here in Oregon, probably February.

Hmmm....you said it went down hill when you moved back.....could it be connected? Just kidding....kinda....and I agree that the Portland metro area and the upper valley are very liberal. But the rest of the state is nowhere near that. And I was talking about the country as a whole tilting to the right. We just happen to be a liberal outpost. It's why I love Oregon...but why I'm also feeling alienated.....
