They got Moore for nothing and he was a lot more capable than Allen.

I didn't make this thread after two games or a week into the season. It's been 25 games of terrible, substandard play that led to the judgement that keeping him on the roster is detrimental to winning.

There are other players on Earth. He's not the only option. He's certainly not "all you can ask for".

Yeah, but Moore was undervalued, and ended up making a ton in free agency.

I think the problem isn't that he's on the roster, just that he's getting 18 minutes a game. We should have better depth. As far as scrubs go though, he's not bad.
 
this thread is so out of line. malik is making scrub money, he's a guy who shouldnt be playing much but he does and he has had some really good games for us. what do you expect out of the guy, to be the next Moore?

He is bad. He's too old. Why not keep a guy they can develop? There's dozens of alternatives out there dying for the chance Allen is undeservedly getting. It might prevent them from having to play another Malik Allen in the future.

He's not the kind of vet like Lamond Murray who can do nothing all season but can still be called upon to help win a playoff game. He's a low-level scrub who should be overseas.

After 25 games of last season, it was apparent the Nets hit paydirt and Moore turned out to be excellent. If he played like Allen, I would have said the same thing about him.
 
Jeez at least Benson would Hustle his rear off... Malik Allen couldn't hustle a dice game let alone hustle in a nets uni...
 
Malik Allen sucks. I love this thread, and Ghoti's points are right on. I don't know how people can defend him at all, as anyone who he's guarding scores at will when he's in the game.

He doesn't make defensive rotations, rarely hustles, moves as if he's walking in tar, can't jump, doesn't seem all that intelligent, and pretty much makes us suck when he's in.

The ONLY good thing I've consistently see him do is knock down shots. And to think that there are most definitely more players out there who can knock down shots, along with more quickness, hustle, better rebounding and better defense pretty much makes me sick.

My stance hasn't changed one bit since the beginning of the season. I still would rather see him off the court and off the team. He's not even good enough to play in the WNBA.
 
Malik Allen plays like a man with an AARP card.
 
Frank has a thing for big men that can shoot mid-range J's. With a defensive coach like Frank, Malik should never see the floor but Frank's love for big men that can shoot is what allows him to play.

This is the exact reason Allen still gets minutes. The other big men are all worse shooters than he is, and the Nets have so many plays designed to make the opponent have to choose between guarding the scorers or leaving the PF open form 15-18 feet.

Unless they bring in someone else or Nenad miraculously starts looking like his old self, hope for the future may lie with Sean Williams.

He has a surprisingly decent looking stroke and he is so long he can get his shot off against anyone.

Maybe by the end of the season he can extend his range to about 15 feet. What a weapon that would be, considering he adds the dimension of being able to put the ball on the floor.

The more immediate option is to play Boki at that position, but he gets into foul trouble very quickly trying to guard bigger players. Frank has already shown he wants to do this. It just isn't always possible.
 
Of our healthy bigs (that is, everyone but Krstic), Allen has the most complete offensive game. Boone and Sean are great from 2 feet in and on the offensive boards, but Allen's the only one who can hit a jump shot or a long floater. He helps space the opposing team's defense.

I agree he's shockingly slow to rotate on defense, and really hurts the team in this regard, but they need him on offense to keep things solvent. If you think we're a jump-shooting team now, imagine if the opposing team's center and power forward could just clog the lane all game to prevent anyone from ever driving.

He's bad, but I don't think we'd be able to pick up anyone who is better suited for the role. Ideally, he'll get relegated to garbage time when Krstic returns.

I'm interested: who should we have picked up instead of Allen? Imagine we've got the full mid-level to spend (seeing as how Magloire's just been a waste). Who should we have picked up instead that could've acted as an interim Krstic?

The reality is that, for the veteran's minimum, the Nets weren't (and aren't) going to find a player that could do it on both ends of the floor. Heck, it's a quality that's even difficult to find in top tier players making ten times more money; the number of top tier players who are good on both ends of the floor can probably be counted on one hand.

I give the guy his dues where he's earned them: he's hit the open jump shot consistently and if there are qualms about his defensive abilities, well, no one has claimed him to be the second coming of Rodman or Pippen. There's a reason why his game has value to this team: the Nets have no true inside scoring presence. None of the bigs can generate their own offense consistently; that's partially why Krstic is so imporant: he's the only big on the entire team with a back to the basket game and an array of post moves.

The offensive success of Boone, S.Williams, and Magloire all depend on The Big 3 to create opportunities to attack the rim from the paint. Allen - as others in this thread have mentioned - helps spread the floor because he is a credible threat with his mid-range jumper: as an opposing big, you have to respect his shot. He opens up the lane, just ever so slightly, for Jefferson and Carter which in turn, helps whichever other big is on the floor by reducing congestion in the lane.

Yes, he's slow on defense and he can be considered a liability on that end of the floor. But until Boone or Williams develop a mid-range jumper (or better yet, they develop consistent low post offensive moves), there will be a place for guys like Allen on this team who can help space the floor.
 
How about DEM apples.

Malik was huge last night. They couldn't have won the game without him.

Krstic certainly makes him irrelevant when he gets back, but hitting open jumpers consistently and being able to body up a big man - it makes him a serviceable 11th or 12th man.
