Via hoopshype:

Portland's (latest) injury-tortured center has missed 97 of a possible 143 games since being drafted by the Blazers. That's 67.8 percent ... with his 100th missed game coming Wednesday against Dallas.

Amid inevitable fears that the chipped knee cap in his left knee is more serious than we've been told, we still hear Portland-based whispers that the team is more worried about the mental toll this absence is taking on Oden -- who's been admittedly downcast all season because of his health woes and the huge expectations he's carrying -- than this latest injury specifically.

Not that we probably have to say it when we're talking about the franchise that already lived with this with Bill Walton and Sam Bowie . . . but stay tuned.

I think expectations have dramatically lowered for Greg, both in the short-term and long-term. The mental toll most likely consists of him worrying about his next (inevitable) set back. People bump knees all the time and they are fine. It happens to Greg and a bone chips. It's torture for Greg and the fan base.

New {adjusted} ceiling?

Why is Greg depressed? Here is a theory some of you aren't going to like.

Oden really is hurt. He is going to need surgery and is out for the season. Instead of coming clean about the situation, the team is leaving Oden to twist in the wind. They are letting people believe he could return and play if he really wanted to. They are spinning it in a way that makes it appear all HIS fault.

Why would they do that?

I think we all know he is really hurt (Well most of us) He will need to be scoped to remove the chip, now or later, why not take the slight chance that he may get well enought to help the team make the playoffs? What does he have to lose as long as it doesn't make it worse? I don't see the harm in waiting now. And Back in Mid-February I am not sure it would have been wise to rush into it either.

The spinning part about making it "all HIS fault" well that part too fucking ridiculous to comment about.

Agreed. It's preposterous, especially when you consider how they handled the Martell situation. Mike Rice (see the "Mike Rice would be shocked..." thread) said that the Blazers put out notice of Webster possibly being out for the whole season to prevent media/fans from chastising him every week about a possible return.

To think that the KP would protect himself while putting his player in a bad light is stupid.

Oh yeah preposterous. Did you already forget the Miles saga. Please.

Sometimes I wish I was born with a less evolved brain, then logic like this would come easy for me.

I think this is something more serious than just basketball. I attended the game vs. the Pacers and always look for Oden on the bench to see how he is doing. Did anyone else notice that it was the coaches, Steve Blake, ODEN, and then the rest of the team. I'm pretty sure this is the first time that Oden has sat near the beginning of the bench as opposed to taking his seat on the last spot of the bench. I think the franchise knew about this problem for a while...Why do you think the team was so hard on trying to get Mike Conley over here so that Greg would have a hometown buddy on the team. Maybe we should sign Josh McDaniels again...

Did anyone else notice what I saw?

PS Who would like to start the wave tonight? :)

Fez you are acting like a child with that avatar, grow up.

It looks like it already does, with your "cute" avatar about being a fucking child molester. I never figured out how someone would think that shit is funny, unless you fall under one of three categories:

A: Your one yourself
B: You still act like a 12 year old
C: your a fucking retard

or the most likely

D: All of the above

So, the theory is silly?

Where did people get the idea that Oden was cleared to play, and that it was his choice not to? It wasn't Quick/Canzano this time. It wasn't an internet rumor. It came from the team. To this day, has the team officially acknowledged that the injury is serious?

How can anyone say the team isn't spinning the situation!?!

I don't trust any of the stuff I hear from the media anymore. We heard that he should have been ready to play. Then days later I hear he is cleared to begin light workouts. Ok, which one is it media? He can't have been cleared to play days before, and then cleared for light workouts 3 days later. I smell bullshit. That bullshit is the Portland media attempting to ride another player out of town and make them a scapegoat. I am so tired of that shit, the team has come so far, and the last thing we need is the media turning the fans against a player. Fuck that. He hasn't done anything wrong like players 5 years ago did. He is just a kid that has got hurt a couple of times. The fans may not like it, but you know what?

Life doesn't always go how you want it to go. So get over it.

Hmmmm, maybe you wouldn't be saying this if you knew that I was molested by a "retard" when I was a child.

Maybe you would. I feel your attempt at humor to be quite hateful.

New {adjusted} ceiling?

How could the ceiling be that high? DD was an ironman. Until he left Portland at age 34 he averaged 74 games played his first 13 seasons.

He he.

However, his average career PER is 15. And a peak of 17. Oden as a rookie coming off microfracture and battling other injuries has already beat that. If (IF) Oden can gain health, his ceiling is far, far, far above DD.

Thanks for playing, but your comparo doesn't make much sense. Either Oden becomes (even reasonably) healthy, in which case he will be much better than DD, or he is constantly battling major injuries, in which case he is more like a Bowie - an above average center - when he can manage to play.

I have been worried about his "mental status" for a while now. What ceiling do you put on Greg now. Would a "Samuel Dalembert" on steroids be too little? He won't be like Dwight, that is for certain, but he could certainly be a very good center in this league. If he could become like Marcus Camby, I'd almost be happy with that given his defense (steals and blocks) and also penchant for assists.

He won't be a dominant big man, but he could be a borderline all-star and a 16/12 type of guy, which we've already seen this year in his numbers.

He won't be like Dwight, that is for certain

Far from certain. Despite having been a year removed from basketball and recovering from microfracture, which generally takes at least a season, he's been above average for an NBA starter when he's been on the court. That places his ceiling extremely high.

If he weren't recovering from the surgery and thus had his normal explosiveness and athleticism, and didn't have the issues with fouls, his rookie numbers would be right in line with Howard's rookie numbers. Not that fouls aren't a fault of his, but they're highly unlikely to be a permanent problem. His efficiency when on the court compares favourably with Howard's rookie on-court efficiency.

All anyone knows from the Oden saga thus far is nothing is for certain! This thread and every thread just like it is worthless because nobody has a crystal ball that can see in Greg's head and into his future in the NBA. Why don't y'all just give him some support so he can be the best he can be, instead of just questioning every stupid little thing he does, like "Oh my god, Greg sat in a different spot of the bench!" Its the fucking NBA it takes a while for players to figure out, especially if you have a rough start.

The only thing for certain in this thread is nobody knows Jack Shit about GO's future!

Some of you people are fucking pathetic.

I won't go into any further detail because you know who are and you know the reason why.

Why do you type like that? It is really annoying.

Flowers for Algernon did win a Hugo award. Maybe he's Daniel Keyes, and just needs another outlet. Message boards are easier than sequels.

I'd fight you, but you're Scottish, I believe...you channel rage better than I.

Hehe. Maybe, but not as well as this.

Also, did you know Scotland has its own martial arts? It's called "fuk-yu;" it mostly involves head butting people and kicking them while they are on the ground.
