Overwhelmingly, in any poll you'll find, Americans cherish freedom and choose it over a cradle to grave welfare state. It's why those who desire that end can't speak directly about their aims; it has to be couched in words like "Hope" and "Change".

I empathize with people wanting to live how they choose, without interference from the government, as long as they do no harm to others. Can you really support a government who tells you that you don't have the same rights to marry as do I? It's none of the government's business.
