Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez killed in boat crash

Welcome to our community

Game is cancelled today, I am still in shock.

I liked that mans ethic, talent and attitude, very grateful to play baseball for the Marlins and appreciated living in the USA. Condolences to his family and the Miami Marlins.

Living here in Fort Lauderdale, we wake up to the news of his death. All local market TV stations covering it. He will be a big loss to the community, he was a great kid and he was revered. A huge loss for all.

As a Vet myself I took great interest in the Marlins Braves game at Fort Bragg. Fernandez captured the fly overs, got his team mates to autograph the 82nd Airborne Flag. Coming from Cuba this man came up through the ranks became and appreciated his American Citizenship. A sterling example of someone coming here and achieving success and to me that is twenty flight.

...terrible news...nice kid, great pitcher. Personally, I think they should cancel all of todays games.

Edit; ...can't tell when exactly the accident happened but it seemed like an odd time to be out on the water...what a waste.

This is sickening news. Such a great young talented pitcher and human being.Terrible tragedy.
Sincerest condolences to his family.

He had just announced last week his girlfriend was pregnant. Just terrible.

From the picture that's out there of the boat on the jetty it would appear speed and not following the navigational buoys was a factor.

Watching ESPN Video, Mattingly & Prado were emotional in remembering his attitude toward the game. Every time I ever saw that man interviewed he always spoke of how wonderful this country is.

I've loved this kid's mechanics, and gamer mind; since his ROY year. I've been watching a lot of Marlin's games, (2nd only to the Yanx), and have seen Fernandez every game he's pitched the last few yrs; as well as closely watching his TJ comeback.

No doubt, a MLB kid I admired as much as any other. Loved how he always had his mother and family at the games he pitched.......

We've lost a MLB sensation. I cannot think of any other MLB player who will be missed as much as Munson. Jose had as good a slider from hell.

Shit, this is not a good year, we lost Kim's Father in January, my favorite cousin in June, my best friend on Aug. 31st, and My Wife's Mother just this last Tuesday the 20th of Sept, also the day of my birth. WTF is with this crazy yr.....? Domino's are definitely falling.

Condolences to you and your wife. Just hang in there and be there for each other.

So sad, I had to restrain myself from crying, thankfully I had a drink.

Wrong place and time. So Sad for his family. Sports athletes are presumed to be supermen/women but you have no occupation when the your time to pass on arrives

...yeah, and I'm assuming it happened in the darkness of the night...very dangerous.

The details out today say they likely hit the jetty at full speed (65 MPH) and the passengers likely died from the impact of the crash. They were likely riding the shoreline in the darkness and clearly didn't see the jetty.

...yeah, read that a little earlier...that's about like getting hit by a car going 60 mph... hopefully and mercifully they died instantly.

Colon took one for the memory of Fernandez tonight as the Marlins explode for seven early runs.

Very emotional Tribute for Jose, actually teared up watching Gordon round the bases after the HR.

I saw Gordon's lead off homer as he broke down crying after rounding the bases. Very emotional I had a hard time not tearing up myself.

I'll catch it on quick pitch tomorrow AM, probably just as emotional as the dinger Murcer hit against the Orioles after Thurman passed. I really liked Fernandez, always remarked how he appreciated this Country, thankful for all his blessings.

Yeah. Tough not to tear up. Thurman's death was excruciating difficult for me. I really
feel for Fernandez' teammates. Same with Thurman's teammates......really distraught.

Just saw the high lights on Quick Pitch this AM and for a fitting tribute to Fernandez all went pretty much as it should have. Rocks ones emotions for sure.

Last night's Marlin's game and tribute to Jose was grand, fit for the King he was. It's always harder to lose someone suddenly un-expected IMO, than those who know they're passing a year in advance....

When I watched Jose pitch, (and with MLB Xtra Innnings), I missed only 2 of his starts this year. Loved this kid since he burst onto the scene. The ESPN Magazine Tribute to "The Cuban Invasion" circa 2014, portrayed Jose in a make believe world, that he held its golden balls....

Jose also reminded me alot of a young gun, who you know if he only can stay healthy with a long career, then we would of been looking at the making of a future Hall of Famer; in the presence of....
