Matthews' Slow Start

I think when the Blazers were scouting Matthews they forgot to realize he played in a much more uptemo system in Utah. He's wasted here playing Nateball.

That, or he is the 12 PER player we saw in Utah.

Matthews played well in the preseason. Perhaps he was one of the few trying on the court?

He is the biggest question mark for me right now. I expect him to break out tomorrow against the Bucks.

He just needs to find the groove. Matthews is a player, he'll get it going soon enough.

2x the cost of Travis? Travis got max MLE...WM didn't. :dunno:

I was just going to bump this thread. Wesley found his groove tonight. Awesome!

Thank you for proving me right, Wesley! Now, let's work on getting the 3pt % above 30%!

He's shooting them really off balance/rushed, if he would get set and keep his form/rhythm I think he'd see alot better results.

Yeah, I agree. The off-balance ones definitely aren't falling for him.

Matthews knew he was slumping and did something about it. Gotta love it!

It happened in Tuesday's early morning hours, when the Blazers' bus rolled into Milwaukee from its 90-minute commute from Chicago, and a dejected and frustrated team checked into its downtown hotel.

Only thing is, two players didn't make it to their rooms.

Wesley Matthews and Armon Johnson went to play one-on-one basketball: Matthews to clear his head of frustrating thoughts and Johnson because, well, because somebody was playing basketball and he didn't want to be left out.

...

It was Matthews' idea. After an impressive preseason, the Blazers' big offseason signing has been upset at his play in the first week of the regular season, especially after his performance in Chicago, when he had five points and zero contributions in the areas where he makes his mark: rebounds, steals, assists.

So when he got off the bus, he had only one feeling.

"A bunch of disappointment," Matthews said. "I didn't feel like I was being me. I wasn't playing aggressive, wasn't being assertive, wasn't moving the ball, wasn't playing confident. I had to start clearing my head, getting back to what I do."

Gotta give him mad props for that kind of work ethic!

What's sarcasm?

I will note that ever since the Wes Matthews era started, our future has looked much, much worse than it did before this season. Thanks a lot, Matthews!

In the spirit of bumping old threads, I thought I'd bump this one.

Matthews has a PER of under 15.

Obsessed much?

Matthews has a PER of under 15.

Matthews has a PER just barely over 15 and that will definitely rise after tonight's game, in which he was extremely productive, had okay scoring efficiency and no turnovers.

Just as PER does not capture how bad K-Love is on defense - it does not capture Wes's contributions on the defensive end. We got lucky with that guy.

Matthews has a Drtg of 109. The team has a team Drtg of 107. He's a streaky player at this point of his career. Perhaps he'll develop into more than that, but an Ortg/Drtg 111/109 ratio isn't great. He's a defensive liablility while on the court, at least in terms of the overall team Drtg.

Means absolutely nothing. The Blazers switch so much that DRTG - if it is not absolutely out of whack of the team (as Oden was tons better than the team last year, for example) - is not a reflection of his defensive prowess - the Blazers defensive efficiency this year is better that it was last year - and this is without the good contributions we got from Oden/Joel at the start of the year and the great contributions we got from Camby at the end of the year - and most of it comes from the improved perimeter defense thanks to having Wes and Nic play a lot together.

He was 14.8 going into last night's game.

If a 15 PER player with a 109 Drtg is some sort of "gotcha!", I fail to see how that is the case. Besides, he was struggling early this season, and as a starter, he's proven to be a downgrade over Brandon Roy.

That said, he has his moments, and is playing well the past two games. Let's hope he carries the momentum into after the AS Break.
