McMillan: Oden surgery "not an option"

Martell broke a bone again. Blake had an injury that required rest. Both got back on the court and didn't give and aw-shucks interview to try and explain exactly why they weren't out helping their team win games.

The team needs to get over its coddling of Oden, or perhaps it needs to realize that depending on him as a part of any Big 3 isn't a given.

Because I doubt people hounded them with questions about their injuries like they do Greg. Infact we only get real quotes from Martell about his foot like every three weeks if not longer.

Well if they begged they got themselves reinjured - and if Greg got himself reinjured we'd all be having a panic attack or shitting on him.

Oden's going to get reinjured at some point in the near future. That's the only thing about him that I feel is certain. Like I said, if he doesn't want to get injured, just never go on the court.

Oden's been injured more than any other player on the roster since he was drafted. What else is the media going to ask him about?

I admit that his quote really frustrates me and is making me post more emotionally than rationally. I just want to see the guy play and help the team win some very difficult games.

Well this is how I view this situation right now. Doctors cleared him Monday (we don't know exactly when). Blazers had a practice Monday night - Greg may have felt there was still a little too much tightness and it could have been bad to participate in practice on Monday. Nate does not allow players to play in a game without getting a practice in so that rules him out for the Rockets and Spurs games. We'll see if he goes in tomorrow's practice - hopefully since the swelling is gone/or down considerably the tightness has gone down now too.

I'd rather Greg make sure he's 100% instead of playing on a left knee that doesn't feel quite right yet and him compensating on his right (micro-fracture) knee. That's just me personally though.

I'm frustrated as hell that we keep having to see G.O. in street clothes, especially in this stretch of games. But that injury with Maggette was fluke-ish. And if he doesn't feel ready, then I'll believe him. I won't question his desire to play.

But maybe it'd be best to start bringing him off the bench again. We need some continuity in the starting lineup, and our bench could use a lift with Greg in there.

Everyone take a step back and imagine this....

Your lying in a hospital bed with an IV in your arm and the nurse pumps a needle of anesthesia into the system. As you fade away you wonder, "why am I laying here?" "what are they going to do to me?"

You wake up a they say son "We just completed Micro-Fracture Surgery, you can't do your Job for a year, oh but don't worry, you can be the savior to the city next year."

Well here we are next year, and sure enough more bad luck for Greg. How the hell would you feel?!?!? Would you be willing to risk even more just to get back as soon as possible? or would you be a little more cautious so you don't have to go through with the nightmare hospital bed all over again.

This Kid has almost as much pressure on him as fricking Barack Obama. Give him a break, He'll be back when's he's ready. And he will be ready.

I hope you get the chance to say that to his face.

I don't have "pussitos" so I would have no problem saying it to him. And yes, I know I would get my ass kicked. Again I want nothing more than to see GO be successful but in this case (knowing only what we've been told) he should be playing and helping his teammates reach their ultimate goal "playoffs"

Quick on the Fan today said that Nate sounded a bit exasperated about Oden. He also said that the coaching/training staff was having to basically force Greg into getting on a stationary bicycle.

Has Oden started to give up on his own body? Does he LOVE basketball?

Came across this on BEdge...

"Also, worth a listen: Quick's segment on 1080 The Fan yesterday. Quick successfully avoided Isaac and Suke's speculation about Greg's drinking and rumored drug use but did say the following: "

WTF? Drinking and drug use? I didn't listen to the segment... but where are these rumors of drug use coming from? lol.. wow.

Oden's drive and desire to play basketball has been raised before . . . during the Oden/Durant draft debate, to be specific. Posters were so mad at the posters who questioned Oden's desire to play basketball (especially compared to Durant who eats and breaths basketball).

I don't know what to make of Oden. It's not just the fact medical staff has cleared him and he has decided he needs more time. His whole demeanor is . . . unusal. If Oden would say "this sucks, I want to get out there but my body is not cooperating" . . . or expressed some frustration with the sitatuion, I would accept this a lot easier. Instead, he is soft spoken and easy going about the whole sitatuion saying that his body just isn't right yet but he is getting better . . . heck even Nte sounds as frustrated as I remeber him ever sopunding about a particular player.

Bascially Oden is baffling to all of us (or most) including the coach (and I'm guessing teh players and Blazer management).

Bingo!

Some people act as if the criticism of Oden is all 20/20 hindsight. It isn't. Penknife may have been the "smart" pick, but KD was the safe pick.

Just so I'm clear I would still take GO if I had to draft today. If GO was playing for a bottom feeder team like the Clippers or Memphis he'd average 15 and 10 which would put him in the running for rookie of the year.

I am more concerned about why when he is in the game, the team doesn't pass him the ball as compared to when Joel Pryzbilla is in. Doesn't it bother any of you that for weeks on end, Greg would be open, and rarely gets the ball passed to him, and when Joel Pryzbilla starts, the guard amazingly enough start throwing him the ball at a very good post entry pass rate? Especially when you consider how bad of hands Pryzbilla has, and how poor of a finisher he is, it just blows me away. To me, that says something is not right on this team. Players have to get past the part of getting along, if they don't get along. It's part of being professional.

Absolutely it bothers me. It probably bothers me more than the mysterious wart next to my... but I digress. If it continues that Oden gets the usual 3 shots per game, Nate will be fired. I promise this. There are coaches out there fiending to work with a young center like Oden. If McMillan uses his center as ineffective as his 3 man(Webster/Batum, go sit in the corner and wait for the ball to shoot the 3) then I see a shirt storm in the making. You can already see bits of depression in Greg Oden, and I feel that is positively correlated with the way he is being used on the court by McMillan. When he gets the ball, he is very productive. When he doesn't, he isn't.

Please be KP's stealth user name. That way your promise would carry more weight.

It appears that Rebecca Harlow is officially more informed than you. Do I really have to post Greg's numbers when he attempts 10 shots or more vs when he doesn't? This was done weeks ago, I would have thought you caught on by now.

I think he was referring to your promise that Nate would be fired. Not your analysis of Oden's effectiveness.

Wow way to not interpret a post correctly and then look down your snooty nose. Your basketball IQ superiority is so advanced, that you cannot communicate with us normal folk.

Well I am supposed to be Kevin Pritchard no? On the subject of McMillan being fired. I think that if a guy comes in being toutted as a once in a decade player and as the 2nd coming of Bill Russell and he doesn't reach those expectations, there will be hell to pay. We only have one option to believe if he doesn't reach expectations and that is every scout was wrong about Greg Oden being a once in a decade big man. I my friend, choose not to believe this, not in the slightest. The coach is killing his confidence and making use of him as if he was a peasant. And my nose is far from snooty, at least that's what the Jews tell me.

So we bitch that doctors clear Webster and Blake and they come back and reinjure themselves and then we bitch because Doctors clear Greg but he doesn't come back because his knee still doesn't feel 100%.

Hm. This does not compute.

Repped for voice of reason.

McMillan said he has become worried about the injury, although he said he has been assured by team doctors that this will not turn into a long-term setback. He also said surgery is not an option.
"We are in a part of the season where we need our bigs," McMillan said. "This (Houston) game is the perfect time to have Greg. Against San Antonio, too."

Considering this team's horrific history of "encouraging" injured players to play before they are healed, ultimately cutting short a few of their careers, I hope Greg waits until he's more than 99%.

"Dr." McMillan should keep his medical opinions to himself and teach Brandon how to beat a basic double-team. That's more up his alley, and ultimately more useful.

Agreed. And Nate should also teach our guys how to NOT switch on the pick-n-roll. How many times did Parker have one of our bigs on him tonight? I bet Parker can't wait to play us again on Sunday, so he can have mismatches everytime down court.

It was 7 shots or more. :)

How about when he shoots 0 shots because he's been cleared to play yet won't? What's his production in those games?

I'd say his production is pretty much out of this world considering he's being smart and not playing when he doesn't feel comfortable yet. Too bad Webster and Blake so easily believed those doctors. Maybe Martell wouldn't have broken his foot again.

I'm sure Oden is the only one on the team with an injury right now. I just want him to succeed, but there is a groundswell of grumbling about him when I talk to other Blazer fans.
