Portland Trail Blazers on Facebook:

Head Coach Nate McMillan will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon on Monday, Dec. 7. McMillan sustained the injury during Friday’s practice and will miss Portland’s upcoming four-game road trip but he will coach Saturday’s game vs. Houston. Lead Assistant Coach Dean Demopoulos will serve as the team’s head coach. We hope Nate gets better soon and returns to the sidelines quickly.

Now's your chance to run boys!

Thus explaining Andre Miller's insertion into the starting lineup lol

What is Monty's role on the team? He always comes across as the lead assistant.

Dean usually gets to coach when Nate goes down. This has happened once or twice before, and in rare occasions, Nate gets ejected.

I know, I just like Monty, and want to see him coacha few games for us before he goes on to coach a different team. And he always seems like the first one up to reel in Nate, first one in Nate's ear, etc. Just always had the look of lead assistant.

Rare? I can't remember Nate EVER getting ejected.

The key question, in my mind, is will the team be coached differently and will the players respond to slightly different "rules" from the sideline?

Inquiring minds are anxious to know.

Gramps...

Maybe I'm an asshole but I think this is good for the team.

LMAO.

First of all, get well Nate. Second of all, don't think for a minute that anything is going to change with this team with Dean on the road. Dean is a puppet to Nate. If it was Monty, I would have more hope. But it's Dean and I'm not expecting to much.

I was rather hoping that the starting lineup works for Nate, and it helps break him out of his "box". I don't see an asisstant in for a game or so as establishing a pattern for success when you know the coach is coming back.

Yeah, I agree. Dean isn't going to run the team like he just got named permanent head coach and the team will take on his identity.

Get well Nate! Just never try to practice ever again, you're too old for that now.

So....what happens if we play bad during this stretch?

Is it...

Nate is better than we thought?

Or...

FIRE DEAN!

What kind of injury is it? Did he rupture it? Will he have to coach in a boot?

Fire Dean of course. He'll be the Steve Blake of the coaching staff, while Monty plays the role of Andre Miller.

Damn, there goes the highly anticipated Miller, Blake, Roy, Rudy, Nate five guard line-up. Nate teased us with it by suiting up for practice - then he had to go and get injured. Get better Sarge.

BNM

So who do you think Nate was guarding that caused him to blow his achilles? My money is on Rudy, but maybe Roy.

To say that it isn't going to be any different doesn't make any sense. Of course it is going to be different. There is no way that Nate and Dean agree on 100% of the sub patterns, play calls and other details of the game. Nate is incredibly stubborn. It took him how many games to realize that Oden doesn't need to come out of the game because he picks up a few fouls? We'll see. If nothing changes and the offense is still stagnant and the three guard lineup is put on the floor, I'm willing to concede that the problem may be bigger than Nate being a mediocre coach with a very talented team.

I'm hoping Dean actually lets Miller call the plays.

Dean is a much more intense coach than Nate. I know a lot of folks will find that hard to believe, but Dean is way more intense. Not the control type of intense. But the will to win type of intense.

Nate picked Dean because he knows he will play his hand very close to the same as Nate. He won't teeter off under his own agenda.

I guess some people will get their wish. we will see how they do with another coach!

I bet Rudy crossed him over and broke his ankles to get back at him.
