Mens Tennis and Womens Tennis: Estoril Open

The Estoril Open is an ATP and WTA clay court tournament held in Jamor, Oeiras, Portugal (in spite of nominally located in Estoril). The men's tournament was created in 1990 and since its inception, every champion except 2004 champion Juan Ignacio Chela and 2009 champion Albert Montañés has been in the Top 10 of the ATP rankings, including former World No. 1 players Thomas Muster (1995 and 1996), Carlos Moyà (2000), Juan Carlos Ferrero (2001), and Roger Federer (2008). Also, Marat Safin lost the 2004 final and Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Gustavo Kuerten won the doubles tournament in 1995 and 1997, respectively. It currently gives 40 Champion's Race points to its winner. The women's tournament, created in 1998, started as an ITF tournament, but in the next year became a WTA tournament. The women's tournament is currently an International Series tournament.

Statistically, this tournament highlights the dominance of Argentine and Spanish male players on red clay. Between 1990 and 2001, at least one Spaniard appeared in the final ten times, with a player from Spain claiming the title in nine of those twelve years. The Spanish dominance waned in recent years. Since 2001, there were only two Spaniards in the final and only one of them won. Between 2002 and 2006, an Argentine made the final at Estoril, wining four of these five titles.

The roll of champions on the women's side is more diverse. In 2006, Estoril showcased the first all-Chinese final in tour history, between Jie Zheng and Na Li.

CANADA'S WOZNIAK FALLS TO GOERGES IN OPENER AT ESTORIL OPEN

Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., was walloped 6-1, 6-1 by Julie Goerges of Germany in first-round action Monday at the Estoril Open.

Wozniak, seeded third in the tournament and ranked 46th in the world, struggled with Goerges' serve -- as well as her own -- in a 6-1, 6-1 rout that took just 48 minutes to complete. Goerges, ranked 75th, had five aces and broke the Canadian six times.

Top-seeded Agnes Szavay bites dust in Portugal

Top-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay was beaten by Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 3-6 6-3 6-3, in the first round of the Estoril Open, on Monday.

Alejandro Falla takes out Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets on Monday in Estoril. Falla is joined in the second round by Arnaud Clement and Marcel Granollers.

Clement struggles into second round

Arnaud Clement came through a marathon clash with Igor Kunitsyn to reach the second round of the Estoril Open.

The Frenchman took the first set 7-5 thanks to two breaks of serve, but his Russian opponent hit back to take the second set 6-4.

Roger Federer captured his first singles win on clay this season, beating Bjorn Phau of Germany 6-3, 6-4 at the Estoril Open on Wednesday.

Sevastova makes Estoril semifinals

Anastasija Sevastova’s stellar year is set to continue with an upcoming semifinal appearance at the Estoril Open.

This will be the Latvian’s second semifinal appearance in what has been her breakthrough season. Her previous semifinal appearance came at the Monterrey Open in Mexico in March.

Her second semi-final appearance was assured when she defeated Australian Anastasia Rodianova 7-6(6), 6-2 in Thursday’s quarter finals.

Cirstea advances to semis in Portugal

No. 2-seeded Sorana Cirstea advanced to the semifinals of the $220,000 Estoril Open with a straight-set victory Thursday in Portugal.

Cirstea was able to defeat Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals despite getting only 45 percent of her first serves in. Rus, however, only forced Cirstea into three break-point situations and wasn't able to convert any.

Garcia-Lopez sails ahead

Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez cruised into the ATP Estoril Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets win over Leonardo Tavares.

The Spaniard saw off home favourite Tavares 6-2 6-2 in Portugal in the second round on Thursday to line up a final eight meeting with compatriot Alberto Martin.

Number one seed Roger Federer booked his place in the last four at the Estoril Open with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 win over Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

SEVASTOVA TAKES ESTORIL OPEN TITLE IN STRAIGHT SETS

Latvian Anastasija Sevastova defeated Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja in straight sets Saturday to win the title of the $220,000 Estoril Open.

Sevastova, ranked 74th, took the 6-2, 7-5 victory in a little more than an hour and earned her first career WTA title. The 20-year-old was appearing in her first-ever tour final after ousting seventh-seeded Chinese Peng Shuai in the semifinals.

Federer knocked out of Estoril Open

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer has been knocked out of the Estoril Open with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) semifinals loss to defending champion Albert Montañés of Spain.

Federer's conqueror Montanes wins in Estoril

Spaniard Albert Montanes successfully defended his Estoril Open title in Portugal with a 6-2 6-7 7-5 victory over home hope Frederico Gil.

Montanes, who beat world number one Roger Federer in the semifinals at the Estadio Nacional, was made to work hard for his victory against the unheralded Gil.

He trailed 0-3 in the deciding set before hitting back to win in two hours 34 minutes. It was his 10th straight victory at the clay court tournament.

"It feels great to defend the title, my fourth career title," Montanes told the official ATP Web site.

"This is a special place for me and I'm happy to have won it again.

"I am definitely playing the best tennis of my career and if I keep playing like that I think I can break into the Top 20."
