Djokovic breezes past Chardy in Rome, Hewitt struggles

Second seed and 2008 champion Novak Djokovic made an impressive start to his 2010 Internazionali BNL D'Italia campaign with a straight sets demolition of Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in just under an hour.

Djokovic opened the match well and broke Chardy's serve in the second game to eventually wrap up the set by 6 games to 1. The second set witnessed a continued domination from the Serb who did not waste any opportunity and closed the 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 59 minutes of play.

Gulbis earns date with Federer

Ernests Gulbis has moved into the second round of the Internazionali BNL D’Italia by defeating Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-2.

The result now matches him with world no.1 Roger Federer in the second round, the second time the two will meet this season.

Gulbis upsets Roger Federer in Rome.

Ernests Gulbis beat the Swiss Roger Federer in an enthralling contest in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament, on Tuesday, here in Rome with a 2-6 6-1 7-5 score-line. With this, Gulbis also earned the biggest win of his career.

Ernests Gulbis kept his cool in a nerve-wrecking contest and made all the right moves after losing the first set to clinch a victory in a three-set match.

Federer opened the match well and pocketed two easy breaks to close the opening set by 6 games to 2. The second set saw a major shift in momentum when the Latvian started extracting errors off Federer's racquet to level the match at the expense of just one game.

Djokovic first to reach Rome quarterfinals

World No 2 and 2008 champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4 6-4 and became the first player to reach the quarter-finals of Rome Masters on Thursday.

Bellucci had another good tournament but Djokovic was too much for him to handle.

Djokovic on course to reach Rome quarter

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic aims to secure his fifth ATP World Tour quarter of the season on Thursday. The 22-year-old, who captured the Rome crown in 2008, made a successful start to the week as he downed Jeremy Chardy of France in just 60 minutes of play. Djokovic passed through the 6-1, 6-1, opening-round clash untroubled, holding seven of 7 service games.

The Serb star heads into the round of 16 with a 19-5 season record, having advanced to the final eight or better in Melbourne, Rotterdam, Dubai (won) and Monte-Carlo. Should he pass through Thursday’s round of 16, he earns his fourth consecutive Rome quarterfinal berth.

Soderling enters third round at BNL D'Italia

Swede Robin Soderling continued his impressive form which included a runner up finish in Barcelona last week with a straight sets yet hard earned win over Italian Paolo Lorenzi to reach the third round at the Internazionali BNL D'Italia, an ATP World Tour 1000 event, being played here at the famous Foro Italico.

Soderling opened the match on a bright note and broke the Italian's serve several times to wrap up the opening set by 6 games to 1. The second set saw some resistance from the Italian who held a lead at 5-4 but failed to convert and lost serve in the eleventh game to lose the match 1-6, 5-7 in 74 minutes.

In the day's second match on centre court today, four time champion Rafael Nadal takes on German Philipp Kohlschreiber for a place in the next round.

Ferrer teaches Tsonga a claycourt lesson, enters Rome SF

Claycourt Specialist David Ferrer continued his solid form on European clay and reached the third consecutive ATP World Tour semifinal with a comfortable win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the famous Foro Italico in Rome. Ferrer has been in impressive form this season with a title in Acapulco and semifinal finishes in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Ferrer started the match under high level of competition and fended off tight resistance from the Frenchman until the last game when he broke Tsonga's serve to close the opening set. The second set turned out to be a lopsided affair when the Spaniard completed the 6-4, 6-1 win in one hour and 12 minutes of play.

Verdasco outlasts Djokovic to book Rome semi

World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco scored his second clay-court win of the season against 2009 finalist Novak Djokovic, pulling to 4-5 in the head-to-head series. The Barcelona champion, who took out the World No. 2 in Monte-Carlo two weeks ago, held on to post Friday’s quarterfinal-round win in three hours and 17 minutes, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4. Verdasco improved his 2010 record to 26-6.

Baltacha crashes out in Rome

Elena Baltacha fell in the first round of qualifying for the Internazionali BNL D'Italia in Rome.

The British number one was the top seed but lost out in a deciding tie-break to Hungary's Greta Arn.

Baltacha, ranked 59th in the world, began strongly and raced through the opening set but Arn hit back and the Scot missed her chance when she was broken serving for the match before eventually falling to a 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7/5) defeat.

Nadal ends Gulbis' dream run to reach Rome Final

Four time champion Rafael Nadal defied a spirited challenge from the Latvian star Ernests Gulbis to reach the final of the 2010 Internazionali BNL D' Italia, an ATP World Tour 1000 event, held in the picturesque Rome.

Nadal opened the match well and broke Gulbis' serve in the very first game to eventually pocket the opening set 6-4. The second set saw a role reversal of sorts when Gulbis broke Nadal's serve in the second game to level the match at one set a piece.

The decider turned out to be a test of persistence and mental strength as both players pushed each other to limits for an elusive break that ended in Nadal's kitty and got him the win with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 scoreline.

Nadal Wins Again in Rome

Rafael Nadal won his fifth Rome Masters title in six years, withstanding two rain delays to beat his fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, 7-5, 6-2. Nadal improved to 10-0 on clay this year and signaled that he is back to dominating on his preferred surface after a series of injuries. He won the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago to end an 11-month title drought.
