Greg Oden starts workouts and blogs from Columbus.

http://www.yardbarker.com/users/gregoden

This week ive arrived in Columbus. This is the place where i will spend my whole entire summer. Im going to try to stay in one spot this summer. Last year i went to alot of different places but this year i want to not travel so much and keep myself working out and not on other stuff. I will be taking classes this summer too. When i got back here and i was going to move in i didnt have anything in my room. I got myself a bed and put together a tv stand and a night stand. Im really proud of that because i did it, it made me feel good that i put it together all by myself. I also had my first workout yesterday my body is super sore i squatted for the first time in like two years. My legs was sore after four of them. At the end of the work out i couldnt even feel my legs but i know it will get better next week and i will keep on working hard and harder than the next day preparing for next season.

A few things that caught my eye

1.

I thought he was going to work out for the select team?

I hope he is under the Blazers training staff right now. Maybe there is a reason he hasn't been doing squats the last two years. Hopefully he didn;t just decide he needed to start doing them all on his own.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

I wouldn't sweat it MM. I don't look to GO's blog as the definitive word on what he's going to be doing and what he's going to not be doing.

I'm glad to hear he's working on squats. It would explain his lack of explosiveness this past season. I'm certain that he's being carefully watched over by the Blazers' staff. If not, they'll have something to say about his workouts.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

Build up that leg strength G.O. We need to see some Dwight Howard-esque explosiveness next season.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

My interpretation of the "staying in one spot" thing sounds more like "no more trips to the Espys to play air piano with Justin Timberlake" and making a lot of appearances and traveling around being Greg Oden Incoporated.

As for the no squats thing, that sounds like doctors orders up to this point, as I'm sure Bobby Medina would have had him doing tons of leg work since his surgery if he had been cleared to do it.

Overall I'm pretty encouraged by this blog post, sounds like he's getting his mind and body right.

I don't think anything Oden posts on his blog is going to go unnoticed by the Blazers.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

I have seen that and I was really surprised that he has not done any squats. Sure makes me more comfortable going forward that he will be faster and more explosive... If memory serves - LMA after his rookie year worked on this a lot during the summer and came back a better player...

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

I like the post. I agree that it sounds like he is getting his mind and body together.

do you really think oden is just off doing squats on his own when the blazers training staff has told him not to?

No, not at all. I think if they told him not to he wouldn't be doing them. But I find it odd that he started doing them after he was in Columbus, and not sooner. I'm sure it's not a big deal, and someone from the team is more than likely there supervising anyway, or at least has told the staff at OSU how to work him out.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

Wheels at work just stated that Bayless recently flew into Columbus to work out with Oden & Medina....

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

The squats thing is interesting. I have little doubt that he was restricted from doing them previously... if he was doing them two years ago, and he was having success on the floor, it doesn't make much sense that he'd just stop with that, especially given that he was clearly working out generally.

And while it's possible that he's still supposed to avoid doing them... I doubt it. Would he be stupid enough to, after two years, suddenly start doing them on his own when he's not supposed to and then TELL people what he's doing?

In any case, while I am not expert in weight training, I have to think that doing his more normal lower-body workout would help him get back some of the explosiveness that we saw before he became a Blazer. And that would be excellent news for him and the team...

Nice. Bayless is THE MAN. I say the more chemistry those two develop the better, who better to kick Oden in the ass than Bayless.

Bayless has moved into my top 3 Blazers now.

How can you not love someone who wants to literally kill the other team when he is on the floor?

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

I know that Bobby Medina and Bayno are going to be spending time with him a bunch this summer!

I think JB would literally kill his own teamates too! I love him.......... he's so GANGSTA"!

The same Blazer staff that missed "multiple red flags" in his pre-draft medical report AND encouraged Oden to balloon up to well over 300 lbs immediately after major knee surgery?

I feel better now, thanks!

No. The Blazer staff that is watching him this summer is the one that ate his left foot and plans on killing the next seven bastards he fathers.

Keep the fairy tales straight, man.

Bayless would have been the perfect Oakland Raider....before Al got senile. Just win baby!!!!!!!!

No excuses, just shut the fuck up and win. I will knock you on your ass if I have to to win.

Re: Anyone else raise some eyebrows over this?

Sounds like good news to me. I believe I have read previously that the Blazers would be sending somebody to Columbus to work with Greg. Perhaps that is Medina? Bayless will be great for Greg. They're about the same age and Jerryd is a work out freak. He should help keep Greg focused.

i would assume that during last offseason they didn't want him doing squats because it had still been a year or less since his surgery. didn't want to do too much too soon. and then i don't think it would make since to have him start doing squats during the season to get him sore for games(and with his two injuries interrupting that as well). and then now that he is supposed to be fully recovered from the microfracture surgery, it would make sense for him to begin doing squats now.

at least those would be the assumptions i would make in this case not knowing any more about the situation.

Actually you have little, if any proof that the Blazers trainer/medical staff were responsible for any of the issues you listed above. From what I understand Greg did the bulk buildup on his own and got told to stop it, and as far as the multiple red flags, I highly doubt you know what red flags were and were not raised when the decision was made. Maybe at the time, there weren't any red flags, because he wasn't hurt.

That's great news! Randomly I was thinking about this yesterday; namely that it would be great for Jerryd to work out with Oden and light a serious fire under his ass. There's another win-win in this development, Jerryd gets to practice taking it hard to a shot blocking 7-footer and Greg can practice his lateral quickness and trying to avoid fouling the little guys he seems to get stuck guarding all of the time.

If only there was a way to ship Violet Palmer there so he can work on avoiding stupid refs blowing their whistle against him...

ba-dump ching!

B-Rex is going to Ohio to work out with Oden - Per Wheels at work

Was described in the first hour of the show during the segment where they gave out their game balls That can only be a good thing for both players, but more so for GO. Now if they could only perfect the pick and roll......

Re: B-Rex is going to Ohio to work out with Oden - Per Wheels at work

good to hear!

BTW, Haseem Thabeet was at the gym I was at working out I guess tonight.

I think Oden comes back and dominates next year. I really do. It never even occurred to me that Oden wouldn't be allowed to do squats until now. So not only did he balloon up to 300 LBs, probably the heaviest he's ever been by a huge margin, he didn't have the leg strength to carry it, explaining a lot of the stumbling and clumsiness. All of that and then not playing basketball for a year while being a rookie, and you know what, Oden really wasn't half bad last year.

When you really take a step back and look at the whole picture and realize everything Oden had to overcome, I think it's a little remarkable. He still made the Blazers a better team while being maybe 70% of his normal self.

Bayless has picked the right guy to get behind if he wants to stay on this team.

Also, there is no news yet about a possible one-on-one basketball coach for Oden?

I definitely like the idea of the possible future point guard working out with the present and future center, developing familiarity and chemistry. The point guard-center relationship is a pretty important one...someone is going to have to get Oden the ball.
