On the NBA pregame show, Avery said that Houston would beat the Blazers if the playoffs began today.

Who do you think would have the advantage?

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

They might, but I think it would come down to home court advantage. We are much better at the RG, and we are much better from the last time we played them.

Exactly. Tonight's game is huge.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

No surprised, Blazers get no respect from the national media.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

If we win tonights game you have to pick the Blazers in a series.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

Cool, more bulletin board material! Thanks Avery.

Ric Bucher, you're up. Please tell us how Memphis has a better young core and a brighter future than the Blazers.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

With Greg and Joe negating Yao, basically tiring him out like we did Shaq, you have to wonder where their offense would come from?

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

No clip, it was on earlier today before the Spurs/Cavs game. It was very matter of fact. One of the other guys showed a graphic of how the playoffs in the west would shake out today, and then asked Avery what was the contest to watch (phrasing may be wrong) and Avery said - Houston has missed the playoffs since 97 and will win that matchup. No body else said anything, they cut to commercial.

Bummer (no clip). I do think in a 7 game series, Portland's bench is more diverse and will tough this series out. Nate will throw out different match-up scenarios and constantly rotate players. As long as Rudy's back stays away from spasms. As long as we find ways to shut down Ming, Artest and Aaron Brooks.

As long as we score more points....

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

Scola is the x-factor. We must keep him off the glass and stop him from scoring. We know Yao will get his 17-20, same with Artest, but if Scola plays big, Houston is tough to beat. I also think we need to keep Brooks and Battier quiet from 3.

It is not as much lack of respect as it is history. The Blazers are the youngest team in the league. (When you take Raef off of the roster-is he even in the state?) If you are a betting man, you go with what has been true in the past. Veteran teams do better. True their PG's are inexperienced, but Yao, Artest and Battier are tested Vets. And they do play great Defense. Irritating defense.

On paper I can't see how the Rockets are even in the playoffs. But somehow they just keep on winning and playing every game tough. I would give them the slight edge.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

I remember during the all star break, Kenny Smith predicted the Blazers would be the team to miss the playoffs and the Suns and mavs experience would pull them through.

Benches are much less important in a playoff series than in the regular season; almost all teams go to a tight 8 man rotation and play their starters big minutes (40ish).

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

which causes the team to degrade over the run of the playoffs.

Not really. Because of the TV schedules, the play-offs drag on forever. There are no back-to-backs with usually two or three days off between games and longer between series if you win in less than 7 games.

If teams do perform poorer as they advance further in the play-offs it's almost always due to the increasingly tougher competition - not fatigue from playing an extra 5 or 6 minutes per game with additional days off to rest between games.

I think it's natural that most analysts will look to experience as a deciding factor when things are close... and these two teams are pretty close. Yao and Artest are more mature players. I can see why AJ would pick them.

BUT. They're also inconsistent. Yao because of injuries and fouls, and Artest because of an apparent chemical imbalance.

Home court is important, but I think that the way Portland is playing the last week or so? I like our chances even if we need to win a game in Houston.

Yeah, you spotted that one and rightfully called them on it here.

The Suns quit long before today's debacle. I watched some of that game because I knew what it meant for fans like us, KMD. :)

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

He's absolutely right:)

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

Everything went right for the Rockets tonight, and still the game was close in the 4th.

I just don't see both Przy and Oden both getting in early foul trouble in every game of a 7 game series. That was the difference tonight.

oden and joel definitely can't negate yao.

whoever has homecourt would win a series between the two teams.

to say that the rockets are inconsistent in the context of a series due to yao's injuries and fouls really makes no sense at all. yao rarely misses time in games due to foul trouble and his injuries have not been the reoccurring type. it's not like he's got a bad ankle or back or something that is going to just continually be a problem.

the real question mark with the rockets is whether they can consistently commit to playing through yao. at times they get away from that and the results really never are good. artest is the worst guy at doing it. he's really the key for the rockets. if he controls himself, no team is going to have any easy time against the rockets in the playoffs, but if he gives away a couple of a games in a series due to dumb play, that's going to be hard for the rockets to overcome.

uhhh... foot problems anyone?

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

The Rockets would win in 6, imo.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

Some of you really crack me up with all of your no respect crap.

Portland is 1 Chris Paul injury away from being 0 for the season against good teams from the west on the road. Our most important players have never been to the playoffs before, and you are whining about someone saying a team like the Rockets would beat us in the playoffs?

Of course they would. Most all of the teams would IMO. Our home record has been great, but the playoffs are different.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

The game that I saw yesterday was very simple! The Rockets bumped us all over the court and we didn't bump back! Houston led by Re Arrest Ron Artest set the tone. Every time B Roy got the ball he bodied him and it worked. Houston is a mans team and Portland is still looking for momma on every hard foul. Guess what guys???? It's not gonna come in the playoffs!!!! This is what an experienced team brings. They know how to get us out of our game. Portland last night showed why they are the youngest team in the league. Portland only gets better by going through this experience and learning that teams like Houston are only beaten when it's taken from them through force!!! That's why we drafted Oden and that's why it's great we have Joel, but B Roy and LA are going to have to get NASTY out there and throw that "AW SHUCKS" mentality in the trash and go for the juggler! That's who Houston is with Shane shots to Rudy's back Battier, to Artests assaults on B Roy to Yao hanging on our centers. Rick Adelman knows our team is young and he's going to show just how through these tactics.

Our boys can help themselves by attacking the shit out of slow ass Yao and getting him into foul trouble early and making their damn free throws. It's also time to bring in Bayless on Wafer and body this kid into the ground. Tired of Von having career nights on us! GEEEZZZZZ!!! Wafer is running around Blake and Sergio, Bayless should be brought in just to foul this kid and get him out of his game.

The only way Ptown beats the Rockets is if the Blazers come into this series knowing it's a cage fight and who draws first blood wins. That must be the mentality, or we go home!

Sounds good to me.

Re: Avery - Houston would beat Portland

The Rockets would win in 5 games. We don't match up with them well at all.
