In the most recent Weekend Dime my good friend Marc Stein reported that Andre Miller appears to be the player on that list most likely to be changing uniforms soon.

While it does make sense that the Blazers would shop Miller, who has struggled to fit into the Blazers’ tight culture and to find good chemistry with his teammates on the floor, I’ve been hearing another name from the Portland backcourt: Steve Blake. Two general managers told me they’ve called the Blazers to inquire about Miller's availability and been told that Miller isn’t available right now. Rather, those two GMs have reason to believe that Portland GM Kevin Pritichard is shopping Blake.

Why Blake? ...

If you read through I think you'll find some interesting reasoning and a compelling case for sending Steve on his way.

one can only hope

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

The real reason why?

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

The only reason to deal Blake would be unleashing Bayless into the 8 man rotation. Blake isn't going to net anything back value wise. I guess they'd try dealing him for a band aid fix at small forward?

The Heat are desperate for PG help. How about swapping Blake for Dorrell Wright?

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

It would have to be in exchange for a starting PG that makes our other starters better, or it's another downgrade like the Sergio/Miller exchange.

BTW, "not available at this time" simply means "offer more".

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

Doubt it. Blake's too important to this team to be let go.

Blazer for life.

Yeah I am sure most GM's in the league are going to be anxious to swap their starting PG for Blake who as near as I can tell is the worst starting PG in the league this season.

How bout Quentin Richardson? Don't know his contract though

QRich is making $8.7M so the Blazers would need to include another player with Blake. I don't think the Heat want to deal him either because he's playing well for them.

Ya I just looked it up, scratch that idea.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

Blake for James Jones fits.

how many years does he have left? sorry at work and those sites like hoopsworld and stuff are blocked for some reason

nevermind I guess its unblocked.. wow James Jones has team options.. so basically its a no risk to get rid of Blake. Band-aid and works for both teams. And no financial risk.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

The Heat have a 4.2mill Trade exception. Blake make 4.0.

The Heat also just cut Shavlik Randolph so they have a roster spot for such a trade to be able to happen. Then they could send us Any player under 4 mill to get us a player.

You can't combine players with TPEs, and I highly doubt we are going to send a perfectly healthy player to them for free.

Exactly. I do think the Jones for Blake swap would be something they'd consider and could help both teams a little. Salary relief and a backup for the Heat, and a combo forward who can space the floor for the Blazers -- I'm pretty sure I heard the heat were considering buying Jones out, so ...

I didn't say we were Combining them.

We trade Blake to them. As a result a TE is generated for us with a Value of 4mill. We then use our new TE to Acquire say Dorell Wright from them.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

I just meant it works financially, but as for team fit, we have one healthy SF right now in Webster, who has been super inconsistent. We have two guards off the bench, both of which are PGs. Or, you can call Bayless a SG, regardless, what the players on our depth chart provide us is 4 different options at the 2 guard spots, but only one option at SF< unless we have Brandon playing SF. I'd rather a 3 guard rotation of Roy, Miller and Bayless, with Roy getting to play all of his minutes at the SG position, and then a SF rotation of Jones and Martell over Roy getting a healthy does of minutes at the 3. The other(small) benefit of Jones is, while he is kind of an expiring contract, because of the team options, we could still trade him before July. Blake, once our season is done, we can only move in a S&T. With Jones, we can move him in June, and then the receiving team can just waive him, giving them an easy way to clear cap space.
Once people start to get healthy, it looks like ti would likely be either Batum or Rudy first, you slide one of Jones or Martell further down the bench. Jones isn't playing a ton anyways, so if he is benched, how mcuh does it matter, and if he outplays Martell, he can win the backup SF role when Batum returns. We also don't lose our ability to spread the floor, as he is a better outside shooter than Blake and Martell.

What are you talking about? You can't generate a 4 million TPE (Blake's salary) unless you are giving Blake to them for free. That is something Pritchard (Or any GM with an injury depleted roster) will never do. Especially since Blake is expiring as well.

You would have to trade him for say, James Jones.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

BTW Chalmers didn't start for the first time all year......

Well, read through what he wrote. He was proposing Blake for Wright, essentially. Blake to Miami for TPE, then TPE for Wright.

You can't clear cap space by waiving a guy. Players are typically bought out, not waived. A big chunk of cash up front for the player, but less than he'd get over the rest of his contract saving the team money. The team does get a roster spot back to sign someone else.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

Well, the article was a little contradictory. Says Blake has more trade value; but the guy says teams are calling to ask about Miller; that doesn't make sense. Also, in his haste to make a point, the author says Miller has a three year contract, which would hurt his trade value. he fails to point out that the third year is a team option.

Tonight was one of the only times i have seen almost the entire game (although I missed the first 5 minutes when Miller might have done his best). Anyway, I didn't see any great point guard skills from Miller, his shooting is atrocious, and his defense is not on par with Blake's. I think McMillan will lobby for Miller to be traded over Blake.

Exactly. I'm STUNNED that the Blazers are saying Miller isn't available. That is ridiculous. We have three point guards. Bayless must play and we need Blake's outside shooting. Miller is the odd man out.

Re: Chad Ford's Blog: Blake could be the Blazer dealt

I don't really care which one gets traded. One of Miller/Blake should go so Bayless can play more.
