Re: Do We Even Need TurkeyBoy?

Yes. Portland needs a 3rd scorer, and someone to take the pressure off of Roy in the offense. He fits both of those. He is also very good at feeding the post, which is why Howard wants him back so much.

Very, very good fit for Portland

If we don't get Hedo though....who else is there? Honestly?

One of the few times I agree with your whole post in its entirety. The guys makes his teammates better!

Re: Do We Even Need TurkeyBoy?

That was a Schonz reference. Bingo, Bango, Bongo, Drexler climbs the golden ladder and the Blazers are up by two.

Re: Do We Even Need TurkeyBoy?

He's definitely an upgrade. I can really see McMillan wanting him because he knows if Portland doesn't win a playoff series this year he could be on the hot seat. Some people want him gone as it is.

I'm not hot about it but I guess I can live with it. In the end the most important thing is Oden developing and if that happens...the blazers will be scary regardless of any FA they acquire.

Some people believe Barack Obama is a God. Some people...

If we are willing to pay that much, we should sign and trade for Gerald Wallace. A player that doesn't need to take shots away from BROY and LA to help the team.

Gerald Wallace isn't a FA.

Re: Do We Even Need TurkeyBoy?

Here are my issues with Hedo:

1) There is no question he's already lost a step and his shooting percentage is down. I could see a 2 or 3 year deal, I suppose, but 5?? I think Webster & Outlaw put up as much offense.

2) While I do understand his rebounds and assists are ok for a SF, I don't see his numbers all that much better than Webster's.

3) What will we do with 4 SF's? It takes minutes from too many people and creates dissension. To just say, "oh, we'll make a trade" is too simplistic. What's the trade? How does it make us better?

4) If in trying to find time for him, Nate uses him at SG, say goodby to Rudy. And I prefer to keep Rudy.

5) If we pay him $10,000,000, then we have set a standard and salaries will have to go higher for the other players and we go back to the best team money can buy or keep.

6) Does Hedo fit our "culture"?

7) With all the potential problems he brings as well as the dissension his presence may cause and the fact he's on the downhill side of his career, why are we getting him?

8) He's a flopper. Great, another thing we want the refs to like us for. We'll have a harder time getting calls.

Now I know some of these things are small and/or debatable, but they add up and frankly I think we'll have fewer wins with him.

What do you mean? He's going to get all of his minutes at SF, maybe some at PF.

Or are Nicolas Batum's minutes too precious to take? Get real.

I couldn't have said it better. Thanks Mediocre Man.

You don't think getting one of the better perimeter defenders minutes is a good idea?

Batum exceeded expectations last year and I'd like to think he'll come back even better this year. He's already a valuable player.

Batum is young and still developing. He'll be absolutely fine with 15 MPG.

Dude. Trust me. He is exactly who we need on this team.

1) Legit third option.
2) Versatile. Can play PG.
3) Clutch.
4) Playoff/Finals experience. (His numbers went up each round in this year's playoffs. He's a big game player.)

This assumes that Gerald Wallace is available.

All signs point to no.

Unfortunately, Portland has cap space during one of the worst free agent off seasons in the last 10 years. Though Hedo doesn't set the night on fire, he is better then doing nothing.

Sure I would rather Portland get Artest. I would love it if the Bobcats were stupid enough to trade Wallace to Portland. But it sure looks like the guy KP wants is Hedo. I am going to have to be fine with that, and hope Hedo plays well.

They need a consistent third scorer right? Plus it's not like Hedo has ever been a first option or a volume shooter.

Honestly I don't expect him to be much more effective than Outlaw at scoring, but he brings so much more to the table with his ability to create shots for others that I think he can be pretty effective with the existing starting unit, especially his ability to feed the post which should help elevate our woebegone number one draft pick ... who knows, maybe I'm falling victim to wishful thinking and he's going to be a disaster, but my instincts feel "right" on this acquisition.

He averaged 18 last year, and quite frankly, probably deserved more than that at times. There were clearly times the Blazers were a better team with Batum on the court instead of an Outlaw or Rudy.

Re: Do We Even Need TurkeyBoy?

I agree with the article. The part about how many shots he and Miller got last year are interesting. Especially when you factor in the assumption that Oden and a few others should get more shots. I wouldn't complain if we got Hedo (HCP you know you'd love to chill on Blazer one with Hedo and some Pizza Hut!), but I think in terms of our guys, we could have better fits. You get Hedo, and Batum's minutes are guaranteed to have minimal increases at most. If Rudy's still on the team, it becomes difficult to get him minutes, especially if we sign a PG as well. I'd rather get Miller/Hinrich and a backup PF, but getting Hedo would still be an improvement overall assuming we could parlay our then backup SFs into something.

Well how about someone who could create shots for BROY and LA? Hedo averaged only .2 less assists than Roy a game last year as a SF. He's not a one-dimensional chucker and he'll make things easier for everyone else.
