Re: Soccer sucks.

That's only because it's the cheapest of the team sports to play. Goals can be made out of anything otherwords all you need is a ball. In third world countries thats pretty much the only thing to play.

I find it extremely boring. Just a bunch of frantic behavior that sometimes leads to little or zero scoring.

As opposed to baseball, static behavior with occasional jogging and little to zero scoring. Or NFL football, where they have to take a break every 10 seconds and have timeouts for the sole purpose of advertising. Or basketball, where the last 2:00 take 30:00 because of timeouts. I mean, if we are just going to reduce sports to clichés then no sport is safe.

It's the primary sport in England, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Russia, Greece, etc... hardly 3rd world countries. It's not like if you took away the number of kids playing in dusty fields with a tin can for a ball and rocks for goalposts, soccer wouldn't STILL be the most popular sport in the world...

Re: Soccer sucks.

I only got into soccer in 1994, when I was at UP for a semester and got paid to be part of the Adidas Club going to all of the soccer games. Got to see Tiffany Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan as 21 y/o's. Learned a little about the game after watching the World Cup earlier that summer.

I find that I like "stylish" football more than a team. For instance, though instinctively I don't like Brazil, I'm amazed at their passing and ballhandling when I watch them. I don't really like the German/Scandinavian style of booming goal kicks downfield back and forth hoping to head it somewhere. I wish the US could pull its head out sometime.

Being in Seattle, I've been to a few Sounders games and enjoy them, for the most part. But they don't have a very attacking style this year. And while I understand that European football is much better/higher quality/more exciting, I feel a bit like a poser picking a team now. I mean, Simmons did a big column a couple years ago where he ended up picking the Spurs. I guess if I had a team to follow it'd be easier to watch. :dunno:

Re: Soccer sucks.

I need some random quotes I can tell people regarding soccer. Like "oh yeah, (random player) is so overrated since the world finals".

If you meet an Irish person, tell them Thierry Henry is your homeboy.

I think/hope that the technical aspect of the Beautiful Game will become better now with the money being put into youth academies now. Still a lot of work to be done, but the tactics will get better, and then we will have more stylish football like you mentioned.

Re: Soccer sucks.

I totally understand and respect peoples opinion that soccer can be a boring sport. But at least its a sport, unlike baseball, which is a boring event that happens way to much. Football is way to slow for me, I can't watch a football game. I can't watch 4 seconds of action and then 40 seconds of watching that action in replay over and over.

The thing I like about most soccer leagues around the world, is that their is no playoffs. You play your season, and the team with the best record (or in the case of soccer, the most points) wins. I like this system because typically the best team in the league really will win. In the NFL a team can get lucky in a few games or play teams when they have a bad game and they can end up winning the Super Bowl. In soccer, you have to consistently bring it every single night.

(I do understand that the NFL needs the playoffs due to the lack of games they play, but other sports dont need playoffs. I also understand that playoffs are big money makers, I just feel that after 82 games or 162 games, we should know who is the best team.)

Re: Soccer sucks.

Soccer is to sports what a mobile is to a baby in a crib.

Begins as mildly amusing then reveals itself as pointlessly predictable and unproductive.

If I'm ever so bored that I consider watching soccer, I'll get an ant farm instead.

Re: Soccer sucks.

It's also the sport of choice for all terrorist nations, and your fan dollars go to support terrorism against yourself.

Re: Soccer sucks.

some people in this world are very stupid.

Re: Soccer sucks.

I think soccer has a distinct liberal agenda behind it.

Think about it.

Obviously I'm not referring to those countries. More like countries in Central and South America, and Africa mostly.

What about China? Basketball is more popular in China than Soccer.

Soccer is popular in India which has many slums. It's population is more than nearly all those countries combined.

So if you don't like soccer, you're a racist, drunk, nascar enthusiast? Brilliant logic

no, you don't get it at all. he's saying a european loving deuschbag is better than a redneck nascar enthusiast.

Re: Soccer sucks.

not really. rednecks are friendlier!

Re: Soccer sucks.

Way to exaggerate. I agree with the Basketball sentiment but Football taking a break every 10 seconds....right. Really trying to make a point that isn't there.

I beg to differ. How long does a typical play from scrimmage last and how long do they run down the play clock before the next snap? Point in case, it's a 60 min clock that takes 3hrs to complete, which means they are not playing more than they are playing.

Soccer, is a 90 minute game that lasts two hours (the remaining 30 minutes is a 15 minute halftime and the intro/outro commentary).

Re: Soccer sucks.

You also can't defend the NFL from being a slow game, it's the first sport that I know of that had official timeouts put in place to allow for more TV Commercial Breaks.

You should spell it phoneticly for the prez so they'll believe him.

I love soccer but I understand why other sports are more popular here. I'm Hispanic and have grown around a soccer loving culture, I just think people in the States are more attracted to offensive oriented sports.

You're right about the pauses in the NFL. But there's generally a lot more scoring in football and basketball. A dominant player can affect basketball more, which is why it is my favorite sport. I still plan on watching the World Cup I think it is a cool event. It feels very meaningful because of its global aspect.

Re: Soccer sucks.

I don't think the US media is trying to shove soccer down your throat. In fact I think there is a strong bias against soccer in NA.

Re: Soccer sucks.

Soccer is amazing as a sport. There are more fantastic, enthralling matches each year between the Premiership, Champions League, Europa Cup, La Liga and Serie A then there are in the MLB, NBA and NFL combined.

The World Cup, while not the BEST football you'll see (That's in the Champs League) is the most fun and dramatic football you'll see. I love it.

I'd say that Germany was the most hated, good team... or Portugal (but they aren't that good)

No. Nice try, though.

Re: Soccer sucks.

All this NFL bashing is fucking hilarious. You guys are fucking crazy. Soccer doesn't hold a candle, a match stick, a flaming fart to the NFL. Come on. Wow. I'd much rather deal with all the pauses in NFL and subsequent amazing plays then watch a bunch of average sized athletes run, run, run, run, run, run, and never score. Call me an ugly American, I don't give a fuck. I played soccer. I get it. It's just not as good as any of the three American majors, and that includes Baseball.

But as I said before, I will be watching the World Cup. No doubt about it. It's a big deal. I get that. And if team USA can deliver one big upset, I'll be happy!

Re: Soccer sucks.

The NFL for me is pretty boring. I only watch through the playoffs and a couple games.. for me I <3 NCAA Football a billion times more. But I just have more fun with the game I guess.

College football is awesome as well. No denying that.

I don't know duder, maybe my view is skewed because I fit in with the coffee drinkers myself. But regardless, I was just trying to clarify that he wasn't calling anti-soccer fans racist (I don't think)

Re: Soccer sucks.

Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world according to number of fans. The number two sport is Cricket. Cricket... yes CRICKET is six times more popular than the #1 US Sport... Baseball... and to be perfectly honest... I would rather work than watch a Baseball game. And I was a baseball fan... played baseball... slept with my damn glove when I was a kid but now baseball is like watching paint dry. Pitcher gets ready... batter steps out... pulls off glove... pitcher steps of mound... adjusts jock... steps in... batter has something in his eye... 15 foul balls later I want to commit suicide.

Anyway... I work with a lot of people from other countries that would love much more cricket and football (soccer).

Re: Soccer sucks.

It is funny to me when people defend soccer by saying that baseball is boring. No shit.

I think of soccer the way Jerry Seinfeld talked about chopsticks, he asked if the Asians have seen a fork?

Soccer is the same way, a sport invented by poor people with a lot of extra land to kick a ball around. Have soccer players TRIED basketball?

One person can have fun with a basketball and a hoop, try having fun for hours with a soccer ball. If you can, you need a hobby.

Soccer does indeed suck.

so just to be clear, you'd rather have claws, than opposable thumbs? (fork does not pinch things) The only advantage the westerners have with utensils is the knife fork combo.

95% of the world has fun playing soccer. ;)

throwball (nfl), baseball, bball don't come close to football in the global scene, football is life outside united states, its culture, tradition, on and on.

Unfortunately, this is indeed accurate.
