Re: Paul trades that work under the cap

I've been trying to concoct a scenario where the Blazers give up Batum without giving up Oden or Camby, but haven't been able to figure it out yet.
Anyone figured out one that does work?

Can't be done without a third team under the cap. (Although you CAN get Rajon Rondo without giving up any of them...)

Personally, I'd be inclined to give up Camby rather than Oden, although it's a tough one. The Blazers would receive back Okafor, who's not a bad player at all, he's just overpaid and is limited offensively.

No it bloody isn't! UNLESS we know for CERTAIN that
(a) Greg's injury has permanently affected him and he'll be a shadow of his former self, or
(b) Greg has no intention of staying in Portland past his rookie contract.
Otherwise it is, as they say, a no-brainer. Do you know how OLD Camby is?

Chris Paul & Okafor

for

Miller
Pryz
Rudy
Bayless
Batum
Williams
Pendergraph....

That works, but its kind of unrealistic

This leaves you with

Paul/Armon
Roy/Matthews
Matthews/Babbit
LMA/Cunningham/Camby
Oden/Camby/Okafor

Wow, ALL CAPS - THAT'S A WAY TO MAKE A POINT!

But seriously. The other question is whether the Blazers (i.e. Paul Allen and the Vulcans) feel the championship window is the next two years, or more 3-5 years out. If it's the next two years, Marcus Camby is more experienced, playoff-tested, and just plain knows how to play the NBA game better than Oden is likely to. After that, I agree - Oden's likely potential (which is still all it is at this point) outweighs the inevitable decline of Camby.

Even in the next two years a healthy Oden >>>> Camby. That's the only question here, health. Camby is good and once was very good. Oden is better now or was last year and should only ramp up.

Alright, my newest scenario is a 2 parter. Generally, Stern is going to frown upon splitting up a deal into two deals, just to give a team an extra 3 million dollars. It'd be circumventing the cap,a nd he wouldn't be happy about it. Might decline a deal. However, if two trades HAVE to be made, and can not be made in one, there is nothing he can do. So..

We get Charlotte to deal with us and N.O. Might be tough, since Charlotte would love to get Paul themselves, but hopefully we can tell them they're delusional, and it isn't happening.

First deal:
Charlotte In:Camby and 3 million
Charlotte Out: Dampier

Portland in: Paul, Okafor
Portland Out: Joel, Camby, Batum, Rudy, Claver, 6 million, 2011 and 2013 first rounders, 2011 unprotected.

N.O. In: Dampier(immediately waived), Joel, Batum, Rudy, Claver, both picks, and 3 million dollars.
N.O. Out: Paul, Okafor.

Second Deal:

Charlotte In: Andre Miller, Julian Wright, 3 million.
Charlotte Out: Boris Diaw

Portland In; Diaw
Portland Out: Miller, 6 million

N.O. In: 3 million
N.O. Out: Wright

N.O. waives Dampier, and sends out close to 28 million, takes in Batum Rudy and Joel. Saves over 20 million in salary this season, and more on long term deals. Pllus, the added 6 million in cash comes close to paying Posey's salary next season, instead of losing him. Charlotte improves two weakest positions. Portland gets Paul Okafor and Diaw combine to cover backup PF and C. Diaw can play some 3. Bayless stays.

Paul/Bayless
Roy/Bayless/Matthews
Matthews/Diaw/Cunningham/Babbitt
Aldridge/Diaw
Oden/Okafor.

Looking at the NOH roster there really aren't any attractive assets outside CP3.

After Collison you have Julian Wright? In terms of basketball IQ he makes T-Law look like Grant Hill.

Hang in there, Monty!

I found a trade that works:

Portland trades:
Aldridge
A.Miller
Bayless
Pryzbilla
R. Fernandez

N.O. trades
Chris Paul
Julian Wright
Okafor

This trade works salary wise. They can let Rudy leave right away to europe, They get a front line of LA and West ( pretty good), with Andre Miller and Joel as expiring contracts. They also get Bayless. I think it is a better trade than anything Dallas can come up with and we can always throw in a no 1 pick too.

Portland lineup:

CP3/ A. Johnson/Mills
Roy/W.Mathews/E.Williams
Batum/Babbitt
Canby/Cunningham/Pendergraph/
Oden/Okafor

Me likey, what about Elliot Williams and Johnson? A bit more depth on your chart.

You could probably throw in Bayless to CHA or NOH as a sweetener. He won't be happy buried behind Paul/Roy.

You really think the C's would go for that? I love it for us obviously.

Rasheed is supposedly retiring, and Davis...hasn't broke 11.5 PER for his career. Camby is miles better and would give the Celtics one last shot at the title before their core turns into dust. (Camby turns into dust with them, FWIW)

That's a no brainer for us. Great trade. I'll go further then that best trade I've seen. Davis and Okafo gives us massive big depth I love it.

Saw this in another forum and thought it was a great trade.

Great trade, I agree. If that happened, I'd be ecstatic as a Blazers fan. Davis is no great shakes, but he's a big body to take a few minutes behind three-big rotation of Oden/Aldridge/Okafor. And yeah, I can see why Boston does it...it makes them better for the next year or two, which they seem to be going for with Garnett, Allen and Pierce all back.

Behold! A more insane then usual trade for CP3!!!

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=26ry5gp

POR out:

Batum
JPEC
AMEC
Camby
Bayless
Rudy
Dante

Por In:

A. Jamison
Okafor
Paul

NOH out:

Peja Stojakovic
Posey
Paul
Okafor

NOH in:

JPEC
AMEC
Batum
LBJ trade exception for 14.3 million
D. Gibson

Cleveland out:

A. Jamison
Trade exception from LBJ

Cleveland in:

Rudy
Bayless
Camby
P. Stojakovic's rotting corpse of a ghost of a former player
D. Cunningham

Why Portland does it. Well duh.

Why NOH does it. Because they were lying today and would save $14.3 million instantly + JPEC's insurance + Miller and the rest of JPEC next year for a totaly of $28+ million in relief and more like 80 million + over the next few years.

Why Cleveland does it. I sneak into Dan Gilbert's home using the ninja skills I acquired in my relentless stalking of Oden. I slip a mixture of truth serum, LSD-25 CIA-Black Ops variant and Southern Comfort into his coffee maker. I alert Cho that he is vulnerable and it's a done deal.
