Interesting timing for this announcement.

One has to wonder if PG negotiations played a part in that. Gotta think that Cleveland might still want to make a move but there was some disagreement on how.
 
I would love to see Paul George in a Blazer uni, BUT, not as a one season rental.

PG has hammered his own trade value. I probably would not trade our #26 pick to have him for one season. What would the point be? What would we be building by renting him? It would be wasting a pick.

The Fakers hold a full set of jokers in this poker game. Heck, if they wait one season, they will have him for nothing, the same way the Spurs picked up LaMarsha for nothing. If the Fakers want him this season, I doubt they offer KP much for PG.

As great of a player that PG is, his trade value is next to nothing right now.

Exactly. The only reason to commit to a 1 year rental of George would be if you thought you had a legit chance to win the championship. It wouldn't happen. So why waste a pick?
 
it would be great watching PG13 playing with Dame, CJ & Nurk, but one year rental... nop, thats fucking pathetic
 
and now it's reported that Kyle Lowry has no interest in signing back with Raptors. This offseason getting real real interesting. Honestly, it's because of this super team shit.

I'm calling it now. He's going to the Mavs. There's not many teams that will break the bank for point guard this summer.

Whose strengths are similar? Love prefers a perimeter role on offense although he has the ability to score down low while Nurkic should never leave the rim. No idea how they cannot be a good pair. Just because they are both great rebounders it doesn't mean they cannot play well together :P I cannot find a more ideal pairing for Nurk than a guy with the skillset of Love.

I originally thought that the prospect of them getting in each other's way was a possibility. But Love is actually perimeter so my thoughts were irrational. You can also rotate the two. Nurkic can play the perimeter as well.

Lowe, Arnovitz: Blazers Can “Probably Construct the Best Deal” for Paul George

Two ESPN NBA experts say the Blazers could have a shot at landing Indiana’s forward and might actually try.

In anticipation of the 2017 NBA Draft and the free agent signing period following, ESPN basketball analysts Zach Lowe and Kevin Arnovitz have released a podcast exploring potential trades, including several involving Indiana Pacers forward Paul George. George, who recently told his team he will not return once his current contract expires, has inspired a number of rumors, some involving the Portland Trail Blazers. Right around the 40:00 mark of the show, Lowe and Arnovitz begin to focus on Portland and their chances of landing Indiana’s superstar.

Kevin Arnovitz: Portland would be an interesting team but I just don’t know that they would have the confidence that he’d ever stay in Portland.

Even though it’s a great core of young guys, he’d be playing with Damian and CJ, they have a bunch of firsts but I don’t know that they’d have they confidence. They’d have to send out some serious money.

It would be a fun one if you playing purely destination doesn’t matter kind of thing, but not everyone likes food trucks and running trails like I do.

Zach Lowe: I like that you brought up Portland because they’re on my list. And I do think they’ll try.

Arnovitz: Allen Crabbe, Allen Crabbe basically gets you there man in terms of money... Or you package Aminu, Harkless … nice wing combination … some good ass contracts right there.

That gets you to $17-18 (million) and then you’ve got one of the firsts … Maybe two of the firsts and two really good contracts? Look, we know that the Portland Trail Blazers could probably construct the best deal. The question is do they have any confidence that Paul George would stay? Or is it just Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Nurkic...you could win there.

Lowe goes on to talk about Portland’s longer-term future:

Portland can't get free agents, Portland can't sign free agents, Neil has said that publicly. “We'll never get a free agent to come here.” If you ever could, now is the time because, if you get his Bird rights, because, you know, this is... like Damian Lillard, culture setter, popular among his peers. There's something there. I think Portland will try, the’re certainly on my list. Depending on who is sent out you I think you might have to put in three of those firsts, or two of those firsts rather or maybe one of them and and a future first unprotected set for the year that Paul George would not be in Portland if he leaves.
Arnovitz then expresses some skepticism, but comes around:

I’m going to give you the naysayer in the room... The guy’s gonna walk. He’s gonna walk... If he walks, what do they have next summer to work with? Are they still screwed? They’re already on the books for 122 [million]. They’re still over the cap next summer, barely...they could get under but they’re still at the water level.

But all you’ve lost is Aminu and Harkless, good contributors but you still have your core...your three best players intact, long-term. But you’re minus your picks. You give one of your extra picks this summer and one of your future picks next summer so you aren’t completely cleaned out. I mean... it might be worth the risk.

No one is their listed height. Durant is like 7ft. Love and lebron are probably both 6'9. Lillard isn't 6'3 etc etc.
 
Dude if we give up very many assets for a 1 year rental while the Warriors are at their strongest we will actually be taking a step backwards unless we trade him to LA before the deadline. Can we live with being the team getting Paul George to the Lakers? Except there is one thing the Lakers would be stupid to trade him there then since he will just sign there anyway.
 
Love is 6'7 3/4" barefoot. They don't play barefoot, so...depending on the shoe...6'9ish. Neither closer to 6'8 or 6'10
 
I get what some of you are saying about how PG “might” re-sign with the Blazers if he is traded here. Dame & CJ are committed to this team, and they would have a season to work on changing PG’s mind.

HOWEVER, it might go the other way.
Having a starting player that has made his intentions known to leave the team at the end of the season “might” create locker room problems, & team chemistry problems. Would the players honestly believe PG is giving 100% every game and is committed to this team? Or would the project players feel PG’s involvement with the team has taken development minutes away from them and will hurt their careers?

This reminds me of the old ham and eggs story about being involved or committed to a project. The chicken was involved in making your breakfast, but the pig was 100% committed. Would PG be committed to this team, or, just be involved until he leaves?

As of now, every indication from PG’s people is, he will only be involved with his team this season, and will not commit to the team he is trade to, unless it is the Fakers.

I trust in NeO to firmly believe there is a chance he stays if he trades for PG. His connections with agents are good enough to have a clear indication.

If the trade happens there will be hope.

He cannot skip seasons. He is 27 and about to join a rebuilding team next summer. This might be the only chance he ever gets, he cannot say I don't give 100%, I skip this season. he is not a guy that has a ring or whatever.
 
So instead of just Tweets and interview mentions, I wonder if either of them have got on the phone with Paul?
 
I see the benefit of even renting PG for a year. It gets us under the LT by quite a bit, and when PG walks, we use his cap amount to sign Nurk without going over. However, having $17M, roughly $18M including Ezeli's contract, in space under the LT (or whatever the amount) is an opportunity lost - to have $17M worth of player contracts who might contribute. We could use the MLE, though, and the BAE - those might get us nearer to the LT threshold nicely.

The signing of ET then becomes one of the best deals NO could have made the past few seasons. He'd be our 3rd guard and #2 SF, as we wouldn't have any depth at those positions otherwise.

After ET, our subs become Davis, Leonard, Napier, Layman, Connaughton, and Quarterman. Depending on if we might keep one of the picks, we'd have a rookie, but I wouldn't count on huge contributions from him.

Some other possibilities are that Indy can send us back additional players. We have Ezeli's contract to offset up to ~$8M more incoming salary, too. Who does Indy have that we want?

Monta Ellis, Al Jefferson are two that Indy might be willing to throw in.

I wouldn't mind getting Glenn Robinson.

And there's a possibility of adding a 3rd team. Or simply making a following trade involving Ezeli's contract in exchange for a player.

EDIT: the figures used are rough, back of the envelope type. Maybe I'm overlooking something or off by a few $million.

I wouldn't trade for him unless he agrees to an extension. We are the youngest team in league and made the playoffs looking like a team that could push for HCA in the upcoming season. If we trade the assets necessary to get PG13 and he walks then we are still capped out with diminished assets to move forward with.

Capped out how?

We'd be giving up $18.5M (Crabbe), $9.7M (Mo), $7.3M (Aminu) and Ezeli ($6.7M, factoring in his buyout). That's $35.5M.

We start at $137M, so we're at $102M before George.

We're going to go over the cap to sign Nurk and Vonleh, at least, after PG walks.

On the other hand, if we're in the WCF or better, maybe PG wants to stay and PA would be paying LT for a winner.

I'd say capped would mean unable to make moves due to being over the cap. The phrase is loaded, as if to have a negative connotation. I don't see the negative in our hypothetical :)
