A "take that" for the protectionist clauses that the Democrats voted for in the Stimulus bill. Oh well, it only affects "tens of millions" in sales for Oregon businesses. I also thought that the Democrats promised that the world wouldn't hate us anymore. :dunno:

Mexico, angered by a ban on its trucks entering the United States, slapped tariffs on 90 U.S. products -- a move effective today that could cost Oregon exporters tens of millions of dollars.

The duties include 20 percent tariffs on Christmas trees, pears and frozen potatoes, all of which Oregon sells to Mexico. A Mexican official confirmed his government chose the $2.4 billion worth of products partly to target states with powerful Democratic politicians.

Mexican tariffs

Mexico is placing tariffs on 90 U.S. products, including several important to Oregon agriculture:
Christmas trees: 20 percent

Pears: 20 percent

Frozen potatoes: 20 percent

Cherries: 20 percent

Wine: 20 percent

Onions: 10 percent

Mexico spent $748 million last year on goods from Oregon -- a state dominated by Democrats, from the governor to Congress.

The global economic meltdown is sparking protectionist measures worldwide. Footwear and apparel makers such as Oregon-based Nike and Columbia Sportswear fear a proliferation of tariffs on products made in China and elsewhere abroad.

Mexico's abrupt move this week came in retaliation for a provision supported by the Teamsters union and tacked onto a major spending bill that President Barack Obama signed earlier this month.

"The vote was to save jobs for the unions, but it's going to cause problems for several other industries," said Bill Brewer, executive director of the Oregon Potato Commission.

He said the United States could lose its entire $80 million in annual french-fry exports to Mexico, for example, because Canadian competitors won't have to pay $16 million in tariffs. Most of those fries come from the Northwest.

While I am not a union basher, per se, I have to admit unions are at the center of many of our current economic problems.

What sucks is Mexico is targeting states with stong democratic ties . . . and Oregon, well fair to say, they fit in that caterogy.

These protectionist ideas seem to be coming more from the Democrats, so the above shouldn't really be surprising.

It seems the only areas where the Democrats aren't protectionist are our borders and national security.

yeah, those fucking border fences look like a pretty good idea with the fucking civil war that's looming in MX right now.

You left some things out, I fixed it for you.

Really? Quoting someone incorrectly and then commeting on the change is within the TOS here?

Indeed. It's a pretty common thing on discussion forums.

If you can find a copy, pick up the latest issue of Monocle magazine. It has a survey on Mexico, 36 page pull-out. Granted, this might have been done before the drug wars were all the rage though...so things might have changed.

What a shitty year its been for Mexico. From their oil contracts and Carlos Slim being "the richest man in the world"....they were looking good...a renaissance era, mind you...I was surprised how sophisticated Mexico city was..but alas, this drug shit will truly bring them back to 3rd world status.

Magazine: www.monocle.com $10 but its worth it...very little ads.

I only ask because a mod here threatened to ban me for changing and commenting on their post out of fun.

You won't be banned for that, nor edited. So long as the changes are rules-abiding (no changing them into personal attacks and such).

OK.

I'll just assume that now-Producer was full of crap then.

No need to worry about Mexico taxing Oregon millions of dollars, I guess.

Very few legitmate posts in this thread dedicated to a bill that ultimately affects all Oregonians.

what's the shocker, we knew this was coming with the protectionist measures that Obama proposed. hard not to see it NOT happening.

Educated voters saw this on the horizon. Few Oregonians in the Portland area saw his on the horizon. Idiots.
